#Excerpt: OUTFOXED by R.J. Blain

Outfoxed
R.J. Blain
(The Fox Witch, #1)
Publication date: November 3rd 2020
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy
Death is a way of life outside of the safety of Inner Tulsa, and Jade means to keep flipping Mother Nature off until old age claims her. With one eye always on the sky, the last thing she needs is a pack of bounty hunters out for her living head. With no idea of why anyone would want her, her wits might keep her free, assuming she can resist the charming lures of Sandro, one of the men out to claim her as his own.
Left with the choice of being the evening snack of a tornado or taking shelter with the bounty hunter, she does what she does best: she lives on the edge.
Striking a bargain with the handsome bounty hunter buys her another day of life, but it also dumps her into the heart of a sinister plot, one meant to enslave the residents of the storm-tossed city—and the others brave and foolish enough to call the Alley home.

EXCERPT:Friday, May 1, 2043.
Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Alley.
I’d been in the Alley long enough to understand only one thing mattered when faced with yet another twister: survival. The swarm of them headed for Tulsa roared, warning all of their impending arrival. The incessant crash of thunder accompanied the lightning, which struck with such frequency the dark clouds glowed white. I decided to stopped counting after five funnels; one, five, ten—it didn’t matter how many of them snaked down from the sky. If one of them got a hold of me, I’d just be another corpse strewn over the Alley. A day didn’t go by when I didn’t cross a new skeleton in the outskirts.
Death was a way of life outside of the safety of Inner Tulsa.
Another twister joined the party, bringing a cascade of hail with it.
Great. Just great. What was one more? Hadn’t Mother Nature figured out she didn’t need to fling everything she had at Tulsa? A single tornado would’ve done the job just fine.
A few minutes too late to do me any good, the lightning-lit clouds turned a putrid shade of green, a promise that Mother Nature wasn’t screwing around this time. Green meant go, and if I’d had any sense in my head at all, I wouldn’t have left shelter at sunrise; I would’ve stayed in hiding until right before work. Everything would’ve been different if I’d just slept in rather than explore the ruins of Tulsa’s outskirts for salvage.
If I hadn’t been looking for salvage, I wouldn’t have been spotted by the tall, dark, and handsome hot on my heels and determined to ruin my day if he caught up with me.
The swarm would cause me enough problems, but if the bounty hunter caught me, I’d be in worse shape.
Some choices in life were tough, and I hated myself for even contemplating taking my chances with the bounty hunter. Losing my freedom for profit could be reversed. Nothing could reverse death.
I flattened my ears, and I lashed my tail back and forth, the rain whipping off it. While I was part fox, I’d adopted more feline tendencies than canine ones. And I, according the tail and ears I couldn’t banish with any amount of magic, I was definitely a cat trapped in a partly canine body.
I could shift into a full fox, a secret I held close to my chest. The instant anyone learned the truth, I’d go from a common annoyance to a desirable. Nobody cared about powerless hybrids.
Everybody wanted full shapeshifters in their bloodlines, and I had trouble enough as it was.
Since six twisters wasn’t enough, the churning clouds spawned two more, and with unerring accuracy, they surged towards the city in a wall of churning wind, rain, and hail.
Tornado season had come, and it looked like it was going to open with a bang.
I skidded around a corner of a former house, a victim of a twister a few months back when the sky had opted to give us a break for a change. Shacks had sprouted like persistent little weeds, but I expected none of them would survive the storm. I worried for their inhabitants, but if they had half a brain, they’d take shelter in a cellar.
If they didn’t, they’d add to the bodies littering the dying suburban streets.
While I had the advantage of knowledge, the bounty hunter had me beat everywhere else, and he snagged the back of my shirt, yanked hard enough to cut off my breath, and slammed me into the broken brick of the trashed house. “Are you insane?” he screamed over the wind. “You’re not supposed to run towards tornadoes, you little idiot!”
I blinked, checked where I’d been running, and sure enough, Mother Nature had truly had enough of my shit, opting to dump another handful of twisters directly into my path. When the twisters converged, probably where we were standing, it’d puree the neighborhood and leave matchsticks in their wake.
Stuck between a rock, a hard place, and a bounty hunter, I had few options if I wanted to keep my head long enough to figure out if death beat being picked up by a bounty hunter. Fortunately, the sensible had left the area anticipating the weather to sour, leaving their storm cellars open for my use—our use, as I wouldn’t leave him behind despite wishing I could ditch him without losing my freedom.
Sometimes, I really questioned why I tried to meet society’s standards of being a good person. Being a good person was a pain in the ass.
As Mother Nature was a bitch on a mission of destruction, the twisters barreled our way. I cursed myself, cursed the hunk of a bounty hunter making a mess of my morning, and cursed my choice of moving to the Alley in the first place. “There’s a cellar nearby.” I pointed down the street in the general direction of my favorite bolt hole, which I’d have to abandon once I shared it with the man out to profit from my head—living head, at least.
The bounty hunters wanting my living head in their possession was looking to be the bright part of my morning.

NEW Sci-fi Release: SPECTRE DEEP 6 by Jennifer Brody

Specter Deep 6is awesome! Horror, science-fiction, great characters, devious twists, rampant weirdness and a heck of a lot of fun! Highly recommended!” -Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of V-Wars, Rot & Ruin and Black Panther: Doomwar
In the vein of Flatliners and Ghost meets The Bourne Identity and La Femme Nikita, a diverse team of black ops “Spectres”―elite soldiers who died in the line of duty only to be reanimated by military scientists and brought back as actual ghosts―carry out illicit missions for the United States government in exchange for day passes to haunt their old lives and fulfill their unfinished business.
Spectre Deep 6 is a paranormal sci-fi graphic novel that centers on six reanimated spectres who have the tactical precision and paranormal abilities to carry out the most important and clandestine missions for our government. Missions that are too dangerous, illegal, and secretive to leave any trace―assassinations, regime toppling, technology theft, halting nuclear weapons programs, and more.
When the Spectre Team assassinates a target, they literally scare the victim to death, making it look like they had a stroke or heart attack, so the target appears to die from natural causes. Then they ghost from the scene, leaving no trace they were ever there. They’re the perfect weapons. The downside to spectre soldiers? They’re like batteries that need to be recharged, or they’ll disperse and pass on. That’s why they have to stay locked in containment most of the time, a glorified ghost prison located in a secret military bunker under Area 51 and powered by a nuclear reactor (it takes a lot of energy to charge a ghost). Oh, and ghost soldiers can get a bit … testy.
They don’t always get along or follow orders. After all, they didn’t ask to be brought back.

Excerpt:Sweat dripped from Avelia’s brow when she jolted awake. A few patrons shot wayward glances at her, but only from her abrupt reaction. No one realized that she’d seen a horrendous sight. She flashed back to everything that had occurred since her dreams began. Someone was trying to get her attention. Was it the ancestors of the Wolfe family, or maybe that evil woman? Don’t be absurd! She scolded herself. That was my tired imagination playing tricks. But then again, was it really? Having reoccurring dreams was one thing, but for them to have different storylines each time, and additions at that? No, these weren’t dreams or hallucinations. Her heartbeat slowed to its usual pace as she attempted to return to work, but as she glanced down at the book before her, she let out a gasp that reverberated off the walls, startling every patron in the building. Avelia didn’t care, for the image that lay before her was of the evil woman who’d tried to kill her. With a shaky finger, she followed the small print under the portrait and read, Nimue, otherwise known as The Lady of the Lake in the tales of King Arthur. Then a slow-forming smile curved the edges of her lips as she whispered, “That’s it! I must have come across the Arthurian legends at some point in my research. All those nightmares and hallucinations must have been my subconscious telling me what my topic should be! The Arthurian legends!”<!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Arial; panose-1:2 11 6 4 2 2 2 2 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;} @font-face {font-family:"Courier New"; panose-1:2 7 3 9 2 2 5 2 4 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;} @font-face {font-family:"Lucida Sans"; panose-1:2 11 6 2 3 5 4 2 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;} @font-face {font-family:SimSun; mso-font-alt:宋体; mso-font-charset:134; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 680460288 22 0 262145 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:none; mso-hyphenate:none; text-autospace:ideograph-other; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Lucida Sans"; mso-ascii-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:SimSun; mso-hansi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Lucida Sans"; mso-font-kerning:1.5pt; mso-fareast-language:ZH-CN;}size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;}</style><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"><span style="font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: "Courier New"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"></span></span><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"></span></span> <div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="background: yellow; font-family: Arial; mso-highlight: yellow;">Book Trailer</span></b></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"></span><a href="https://youtu.be/S-2G-_3KkFE"&gt... style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"><span style="color: #1155cc; font-family: Arial;">https://youtu.be/S-2G-_3KkFE</span... style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"></span></a><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></span> <div class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">About the Author</span></b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xIf-lVNuZR..." imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="400" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xIf-lVNuZR..." width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk26037274;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Allow me to take you on a journey to my literary universe--the Chronosalis Galaxy. #GUEST POST by Sarah Sutton, WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR

When I Knew I Wanted to be a Writer
The first time I read The Gingerbread Man, I knew I wanted to be a writer. So much so that I took the book home from the school library, went to my mom’s computer, and began copying the book word for word onto the notes app. I thought that made me a writer. And then, from that, I went back and edited it to be the Gingerbread Boy and writing about his own adventures.Yeah, my first ever piece of writing was a Gingerbread Man fan-fic.I also remember in all of my free time, I scribbled on random pieces of notebook paper and shoved it into those folders that you get for school. In the fifth grade, I passed around that folder for my classmates to read, and was so excited to hear them tell me that I needed to grow up and become an author.Looking back on that now, it makes me smile. Like, a big, huge, stupid smile. Even from that age, I knew that I was to be a writer. One way or another, I would become one. That dream followed me as I grew, and though sometimes it was put on the back burner, the idea of being an author never really died out for me. That desire was still there, just quiet, building. But as I went into my senior year, that dream became loud again. I was growing up, told to decide what I wanted to be for the rest of my life. The answer came quick, simple: I want to be a writer. I still can’t believe the road I’m on right now, as well as the journey that led me to here, but it’s been such a dream. One that I’d been holding close to my heart for most of my life. And it’s so surreal to see that dream coming to a reality.

#Excerpt: ABRACADABRA by K. Stevens

Abracadabraby K. StevensGenre: Paranormal Urban FantasyMagic and mayhem are his middle names. Figuratively. Not literally. He's not sure he even has a middle name, let alone two.
Rod's a trickster by trade, magician by hobby, and thief by night. But when an old friend hunts him down and asks a favor, he can't refuse. Mostly because she'll likely try to kill him before asking again. But also because it presents a very interesting puzzle: to hunt down what a half-elf, magic weapons, and a killer-led cult of shapeshifters have to do with each other.
Lucky for him, Rod has the ability to be in three places at once. The problem? Even he can't always tell which him is the real him.

 Excerpt:
You’d be surprised how many pirate ships can fit into a magical underground harbor. It was laughable how much Miles’ ship looked like a toy boat compared to the mechanical wonders surrounding it. The huge slats of wood on either side and bottom of his ship didn’t help the notion. It was considered “old-fashioned” to still have a wooden hull -- not to mention dangerous if there wasn’t an ample amount of protection behind it. Apparently Miles happened to be an old-fashioned type of guy. The wood was old, but had a bright sheen to it as if Miles had gone over it was some sort of gloss. One could only hope it was for protection and not decoration. It had a pointed nose and a narrow rudder, the sides bulging and creaking as it teetered in place. Large metallic fins stuck out from either side with a single larger fin protruding from the deck, and all three were  pulled tight against the ship, resulting in the ship looking even smaller. To be honest, it looked kind of like a giant fish.As if its size and shape weren’t enough to make it stand out, two cannon noses poked out near the front like a pair of empty eyes while something akin to a huge sniper barrel rested on the deck.Miles motioned to an old rope ladder clanking along the side. He flashed a mischievous smile to Olyvia, who was clearly uncomfortable with the whole affair and rethinking her deal.“Ladies first,” he said.

FOREWORD BY SUZANNE SOMERS
Biology of the Brain
Are you sick?

Are you plagued by chronic health problems with no cure or remedy in sight?

Are you tired of spending thousands on medications that only seem to make you worse?

Think that your drugs are a sham that are just managing symptoms and never dealing with the root cause? You’re not alone!

Millions suffer from similar ailments and health struggles just like you, only to be prescribed more medications that can actually cause harm, and in some cases, even kill you. The medical industry has it all backward!

Chronic health conditions and mental health disorders are increasing at an alarming rate, and yet we are still trying to use the same old ineffective drugs that can have very serious side effects.

We’re the blind leading the blind in the hopes that the next great pill will solve all of our problems. Meanwhile, the health of the majority of Canadians and Americans is deteriorating—fast!

But there is a growing understanding in the community that there’s a bigger beast at the heart of the health epidemic…

It’s called the microbiome. And it’s intimately connected to your brain.

Microbiome health is brain health.

In The Biology of the Brain, Kent MacLeod, pharmacist, founder and CEO of NutriChem Compounding Pharmacy and Clinic, breaks down why modern medicine is killing people instead of healing them. Instead of leaving the problem as it stands, he provides you with clear, actionable steps to not only heal your microbiome, but to restore your brain health and get your life back.
Excerpt:

This chapter is about the 50% of people that do not get a full response to our microbiome treatment plans within the first 30 days. We’ll cover how:

• Not everyone responds to diet, probiotics, and prebiotics.

• There are bacteria and fungi that must be killed off, and are dificult to kill off, before certain people can shift their microbiome effectively.

• There are certain herbal antimicrobials that have proven to be as effective as many antibiotics for killing biofilm-forming microorganisms.

• There are other herbals, with less scientific evidence, that have been used traditionally to treat gastrointestinal issues.

We are beginning to realize that almost all substances, be it a drug, a food, or a drink, impact the microbiome, and we must be aware of this. RESPECT THE MICROBIOME! DISRESPECT IT AT YOUR PERIL!

For certain patients, we have to dig deeper into their issues with specific testing. Using urinary organic acid testing (a urine sample), we can look at signs of bacterial or fungal overgrowth and biofilms that may not be treatable with diet, probiotics, and prebiotics. We also look at stool samples for bacterial strains, and perform bacterial DNA testing to identify what bugs are currently residing in your gut.

We are just now beginning to awaken to the fact that any time that you change your diet, fibers, drugs, or herbs, you are always shifting or manipulating the microbiome. Anything that you intake, be it food, drink, or drugs, can impact the microbiome. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction have also shown to improve the health of the microbiome.

An interesting example is the drug, metformin. Metformin has been the number one oral drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes for decades. Initially, we thought that this drug sensitized the body to insulin via the pancreas or liver, but recent studies have shown that metformin actually exerts its effects via the microbiome.

#Excerpt: TRUST IN LOVE by Linda Kage

Trust In Love
Linda Kage
(Love Mark, #2)
Publication date: May 4th 2020
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance
The kingdom of Far Shore still resents Donnelly, its neighboring land, for forming an alliance with those filthy High Clifters and then defeating them in war. Twice! They really must pay for such an insult. And what better way to prick their pride than to steal their lovely, revered princess, mutilate her a little, and then ransom her back to them for a hefty sum.
So, the king blackmails stable hand, Farrow, into accepting the mission of kidnapping Princess Nicolette and bringing her back to Far Shore to meet her gruesome fate.
With his sister’s life on the line, Farrow reluctantly accepts the quest and travels through sand and forest, only to find Nicolette eagerly awaiting his arrival with her bags already packed and good to go, spouting off insane nonsense about being his destiny and one true love.
What follows is a crazy, eclectic adventure that brings two lost souls together and helps them learn who they’re supposed to be and what they’re supposed to do in this ever-changing journey called life.

EXCERPT:“Given the proper incentive, Farrow here might be more reliable to fulfill this quest than anyone in all of Far Shore.”
I narrowed my eyes. The douche might’ve just complimented me, but I’d never trusted him. Whatever Greggor was thinking, I already knew I wouldn’t like it.
“What do you mean?” The king asked curiously, and I shook my head, wishing he’d just disregard the damn advisor’s suggestion already. Find someone else for his stupid mission.
But he didn’t.
“The boy’s quite fond of that middle girl of yours, isn’t he?” Greggor’s top lip curled into a wicked snarl as he watched my face drain of color. Then he rasped one word.
“Sable.”
And just like that; my entire world shifted on its axis.
Cold, slippery dread slithered through my system.
I immediately waved both my hands, disagreeing. Whatever he wanted to do that involved Sable, I was out. She was an innocent twelve-year-old child. Why should she be brought into any plans that involved kidnapping another kingdom’s princess? This already sounded disastrous.
Turning to my father—my eyes pleading—I said, “No.”
But the panic on my face only caused the king to blink in surprise before he motioned to his advisor. “Keep talking.”
No,” I growled more vehemently as Greggor said, “We could hold the child in the dungeon until Farrow returns with the Donnelly bitch. And if he fails his mission…” He glanced at me and smiled. “Sable dies.”
What?!” I shouted. “The hell you say.” Turning to my father, I was even more horrified because I could tell the ignorant ass was actually considering this madness. “Have you lost your damn mind?” I boomed “How could you even ponder such a ridiculous notion? Sable is your daughter.”
King Torrance shrugged. “And you’re my—” He cut himself off before finishing the sentiment.
I held my breath, wondering if this was going to be the moment of truth, when he finally called me son. My heart beat hard in my chest, yearning for that one word, while my stomach churned, also dreading it. Being his would mean I actually belonged somewhere; I was someone. But did I really want to be the heir of this brute?
He snickered and waved a hand. “Well, whatever you are. You’re both equally useless to me, so…” He motioned toward a pair of guards by the entrance of the room. “Fetch the girl.”
“No. Stop!” I stepped toward the guards to waylay them, but the king waved his hand again, and four more knights stepped into my path, blocking my way.
I snarled at them before whirling back to the king. Shit had just gotten real. With Sable involved, my will collapsed like a poorly-dug well.
“You don’t have to involve her,” I told him. “I’ll do it!”

Interview with Elizabeth Hrib, THE DARK IN BETWEEN

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series? The Dark In-Between is a standalone YA paranormal novel with fierce female friendships, adorable love interests, and lots of mythical angel lore. It focuses on seventeen-year-old Casey Everett who finds herself tugged into Limbo, the space between the living and the dead after a near-death drowning experience. She loses her best friend, Liddy, in this accident and is plagued by strange, living nightmares of a dark in-between world. With the help of Red, a fallen angel that’s come to earth to regain his wings, Casey must learn to walk the dangerous paths of Limbo in order to save Liddy from something even worse than death.
Do you have a favorite character?Red is definitely my favourite character in the book. He’s an angel, first of all, and super powerful (some of the time). But he’s also recently fallen to earth, quite literally, and on a mission to somehow regain his wings. He’s lived a lot of lives, loved and lost, and introduces Casey to the war that’s existed between angels and demons for centuries. If I was ever going to expand the story in The Dark In-Between, it would be to explore Red’s past some more. I also have a soft spot for Casey’s friend Evan because he’s just a sassy, sarcastic dork.
Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?In the book, Casey has two best friends, Liddy, whose soul she’s trying to save, and Evan. I knew when I set out to write the story that Evan would play a significant role, one of which was the romantic interest. But in the original draft I wrote and submitted to Swoon Reads, Casey couldn’t bring herself to tell Evan about all the strange, paranormal things that were happening to her. Because of this, he sort of got cut out of most of the story until the very end of the book where she revealed everything. I think it was during the second round of edits with Swoon Reads when I realized that things in the book weren’t working simply because Casey hadn’t told Evan the truth. So, I made a big change, introduced Evan to the paranormal world much earlier, and he became an integral part of the plot as well as Casey’s emotional journey. In a way, I’d always set out to write Evan as a major character, but it took several rounds of edits for him to actually evolve from a minor one.
How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel? The Dark In-Between wasn’t the first thing I’d ever written, but it was the first work that I’d taken seriously enough to consider trying to publish. I actually wrote the first draft during an incredibly busy time in my life. I’d literally just finished university, I was in the middle of studying for the national nursing licensing exam (which you need to pass in order to be a practicing nurse), and I also decided that it was a great time to get my driver’s license. For some reason, that’s when inspiration struck. So, in between study sessions and driving practice, I penned this story. I hadn’t heard of Swoon Reads at that point. I’m actually not even sure how I found out about it, but as I was preparing to move across the country that summer for a nursing job, I remember finding the site and something just seemed right. Then I put my story up on the Swoon Reads site and, I hate to say this, forgot about it for a while. Moving and starting a new job and essentially a new life was so time consuming. At that point, I don’t think I even had that much time to dedicate to writing. But all of a sudden it was November and I got an email from Swoon Reads that said they wanted to talk! From there things just snowballed into a real published book. So, long story short, I want to say it was probably about five to six months from penning the story to my offer from Swoon Reads.
What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence? In the same way a lot of people find music or other noises distracting when they’re trying to focus and write, I actually find silence super distracting. Without some sort of background noise, I have a really hard time sitting down at my laptop and writing. (Even sitting down to write this now, I’ve opened my living room window and there’s the constant sound of the street and cars and horns honking and sirens and voices to keep me focused.) I really favour my local coffee shops for this reason as well. There is usually enough activity going on with people coming and going to create a comfortable kind of atmosphere for writing. Without it, I totally lose focus. So, music definitely plays a huge role in my writing and I rely on it to feed my muse. Sometimes I’ll listen to music for inspiration before I write and other times I’ll let it play in the background during a writing sprint. I listen to a lot of instrumental music tracks when I’m writing. I find that words can sometimes distract me and I’ll sooner start singing along than actually paying attention to what’s happening on the page. I also keep a YouTube playlist of writing music to get me through any bouts of writer's block.
Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?Whenever I start writing a new project, it usually begins smack-dab in the middle with a random scene or a bit of detailed dialogue that I have absolutely no reference for. The plot is unknown. The characters are only grainy versions of who they might become. There are tons and tons of details I won’t even have on my radar for thousands and thousands of words still. This is mostly because I’m a terrible plotter and definitely more of what the writing world calls a panster. I ‘fly by the seat of my pants’ and sort of let the characters run off and make up the story as they go. Sometimes this works out really well and other times the characters get stuck somewhere, at which point I usually put the project aside for a little while. For me, writing this way is all about chasing a feeling on the page and hoping that a story emerges with it. In my own personal experience, I’ve learned that if I manage to power through the first twenty thousand words of a new project, I’ll usually be able to finish writing the book. If I struggle to find those first twenty thousand words, I know that particular project isn’t ready for me to tackle just yet.
What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?My favourite marketing platforms are definitely Twitter and Instagram. I think they are both so accessible to authors and offer a way to interact instantly with both old and new readers. They both offer great opportunities to build a buzz about your book with posts or giveaways and I love that as an author I can create different content for each one. Plus I just absolutely adore bookstagrammers and all the amazing photos they take. Insert heart eyes here! In terms of being a YA author, I think these two platforms are a great way to reach that target audience as well. But I’ve also been involved in lots of other marketing for THE DARK IN-BETWEEN. I know there was a Goodreads giveaway that happened. I’ve done various blog posts and interviews about the book, some for the Swoon Reads site (my publisher!) specifically as well as for other book bloggers, and I’ve also posted about it on Facebook. I think having a dedicated team of people to champion your work is also super important when it comes to marketing. The team at Swoon Reads is absolutely amazing with this as well as all the other Swoon Reads authors. I’ve never worked with a more dedicated or encouraging group of people who are always ready with a likeor a retweet when you need it!
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?I really love anything creative. Growing up, I was totally focused in the opposite direction. I was very scholarly. I studied a lot of science in high school and then pursued a nursing degree. But as I got older and sort of branched out on my own, I discovered a love of music. So now I play several instruments (poorly), including piano, guitar, and the flute. I also adore musical theater and you can usually find me in the audience of a local theater production. It’s still considered writing, but I’ve recently discovered that I actually really enjoy screenwriting and I’ve been pursuing opportunities that way. And I also love to garden. I live on the twentieth floor of an apartment building, so my green-space is sort of lacking, but I have dozens of plants potted around my living room.
Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?Dogs or cats? Oh, this is so difficult. I literally can’t decide and want to say both. Logistically, living in an apartment and working twelve hour shifts as a nurse really favours a cat more because they’re sort of independent. My sister and I had a cat while we were both in university and I loved her. She was a great study buddy during exams and adored being dramatic. But I also love dogs. I grew up with dogs in my family and maybe someday down the line there will be another. Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate, hands down. There isn’t even a question about it. Coffee or Tea? I managed my entire university career without ever drinking coffee, but tea was definitely my sweet spot and still is. It’s like that quintessential cozy writer’s drink! Talk or Text? I’d much rather talk any day of the week. Right now I live pretty far from my family and a lot of my friends, so, I’ve gotten very good at keeping up with them through video chats and phone calls. There really is no substitute for being able to see someone or hear their voice. Day or Night? I’m definitely more of a night owl and would rather stay up super late than be forced out of bed in the morning. I even have the blackout curtains to prove it!
What’s next for you?I totally don’t know. I mean, writing was something I realized I wanted to do after high school, and I am absolutely amazed that I can now say I’m a published author, but I also pursued other passions and got my nursing degree. So, it’s really a balance between pursuing both careers for now. I think that’s the amazing thing about writing. You can absolutely be a writer and work another day job and I know a lot of writers that do exactly that. In terms of what I’m working on next specifically, I’ve started a few screenplays that I’m excited for. I have a YA sci-fi Pinocchio retelling in the works, a YA contemporary paranormal rom-com that I’m working on, and a dark YA gothic-witchy fantasy thing that I’ve literally just started that I am loving. So, we’ll see what happens next!<!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Arial; panose-1:2 11 6 4 2 2 2 2 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;} @font-face {font-family:"Merriweather Sans"; mso-font-alt:"Times New Roman"; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:auto; mso-font-signature:0 0 0 0 0 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Merriweather Sans"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Merriweather Sans"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Merriweather Sans";} p.normal, li.normal, div.normal {mso-style-name:normal; mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Merriweather Sans"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Merriweather Sans"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Merriweather Sans";}size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.0in 1.0in 1.0in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.6in; mso-page-numbers:1; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;}</style><br /><br /><div style="margin: 0 auto 15px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://xpressobooktours.com/" target="_blank"><img alt="" src="https://www.xpressobooktours.com/wp-c..." style="height: auto; max-width: 100%;" /></a></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> </span></span><br /><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>The Dark In-Between</b><br /><b>Elizabeth Hrib</b><br />Published by: Swoon Reads<br />Publication date: May 5th 2020<br />Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult</span></span><br /><blockquote><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Action-packed and emotionally powerful like big- and small-screen hits such as <i>The Sixth Sense </i>and <i>Supernatural</i>, <i>The Dark In-Between </i>by Elizabeth Hrib is sure to stay with you long after the lights go out.</b></span></span><br /><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>Something lurks in the shadows between life and death.</i><br /><br />A terrible accident brings sixteen-year-old Casey Everett’s life to a halt—literally. #Review: A DUKE BY ANY OTHER NAME by Grace Burrowes

4 of 5 stars  Nathaniel, Duke of Rothhaven, rarely leaves his home and discourages any and all interactions with the locals. That is, until Lady Althea Wentworth sends her prize hogs into his orchard. When he storms to her home demanding she remove them, he's not prepared for the attraction he feels for the lady. Any relationship cannot be--he won't entertain it. Althea has decided to forego the London Season this year and yearns to know her reclusive neighbor, but she's not prepared for the complicated feelings she has for the arrogant duke. Can these two get past any hostilities and find their own HEA?
This was an interesting and entertaining book especially since it takes place away from the glittering ballrooms of London. Althea is tired of trying to be accepted by the ton in London. No matter what she does, there are whisperings behind her back and gossip about her not belonging. She's done trying to fit in and decides to stay put in the country. I loved Althea and her bold personality. She plunges forward into helping the poor, but just like in London, she's not accepted. Nathaniel tries his best not to interact with Althea, but with each new encounter, he finds himself smitten with her. Nathaniel is such a good and noble character, sacrificing his own happiness for his family. This book has intrigue, mystery, heartache and finally a HEA for these two and I loved every minute of their journey.
I voluntarily read this advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

The past isn't over, it's an opening. The future isn't hidden, it's a trap.If she ever wants to see him again, she'll have to take the risk...
Publishers Weekly Starred Review: "Funny, Romantic & Harrowing!"
When offered a one-way trip to the past, Iz sacrifices everything for a chance to change her dystopian future—and see her murdered lover one last time.
After a perilous journey through a black hole, she wakes up on a tropical beach, buck naked and mortally wounded—but twenty years younger! With only hours to live, she must convince an enraptured but skeptical twenty-something guy to fix their future relationship and thereby save the planet (no one is quite sure why.)
But it's easier said than done, as success means losing him to a brainy, smart-mouthed bombshell (her younger self), and that's a heartbreaker, save the world or not.
Across the infinite expanse of space and time, love endures...
(Unfortunately, it’s not going to be enough.)
FALL INTO THIS EDGY, action-packed, darkly comedic, dystopian love story, and be prepared to encounter a finicky time machine, a mysterious seashell, and a very clever dog (some sex, some swearing, some violence, but no vampires and absolutely no ditzes.)
Content Warning! This book contains material that may be disturbing to some, and in movie form, would be rated NC-17 for strong language, nudity, sexual situations, and violence (including attempted sexual assault, abduction, intense danger, miscarriage, confinement, a pandemic, religious fanaticism (Christian), government malevolence, and death).Reader discretion is advised.

From the award-winning author D. L. ORTON comes book two in the Between Two Evils Series...
If someone took everything you live for, how far would you go to get it back?
When a faulty time machine deposits Diego at the top of a towering evergreen, he knows he's in the wrong place—but has no idea he's also in the wrong time. Naked and shivering in the primeval forest, he attempts to climb down—but slips, whacks his head on a branch, and tumbles into oblivion.
He awakens inside a darkened room, crippled and disheartened, and must come to grips with the realization that he is marooned in a bleak alternate future. In this universe, what remains of the human race is trapped inside a handful of aging biodomes. With his mission failed, his world destroyed, and the one woman he loves dead, he can find no reason to go on living.
Except Lani, the emotionally scarred doctor who must put Diego's broken body back together, refuses to let him die, and as Diego heals, their relationship becomes... complicated. He struggles to let go of the past but is unable to get Isabel out of his head—or his heart. Just when it seems he may be able to find some measure of happiness in a world teetering on the edge of extinction...
Another note arrives from his past: Isabel is alive—but not for long. Find the time machine, and go home before it's too late...
