Spring Strawberry Salad with cucumber and feta

Spring Strawberry Salad with cucumber and feta

This salad was born of having absolutely nothing in my refrigerator to eat.  At least that’s exactly what it feels like when I open the refrigerator doors and find lettuce, and a hunk of cucumber, almost past strawberries, and a little nugget of feta from a few nights past.  Nothing.  Nothing.  Are there any more crackers left in the pantry and how is it that this little cold-house of food never has anything I want to eat in it?

Minty Chip Meringues

Minty Chip Meringues

There was a time when I thought only a wizard, or my dad, could whip eggs into that elusive, glossy, tall and fluffy, stark bright meringue white.

Meringue aren’t reserved for wizards (or baking dads).  We can have our own… as minty and light as air as we’d like them.

I would still say that the best meringue comes atop my dad’s Lemon Meringue Pie which, as I type this, I realize I’ve never attempted to make on my own.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

I reserve my Saturday nights to write these posts.  It’s become my favorite time of the week.  Thank you for sharing that with me in the way that you do.

This week I took a mid-week jaunt (is that an annoying word?) to New York City for a bit of work.  It was sunny and snowy, I ate one bagel, had more than one cup of coffee, more than one glass of wine, and one very cozy dinner at Cafe Cluny.

Bowl of Food: Spicy Roasted Vegetable Ramen

Bowl of Food: Spicy Roasted Vegetable Ramen

It always felt like my parents were early adopters to the whole health-food kick of the 1980s.  If you weren’t around then… or you weren’t old enough to be scarred by tofu-heavy dinners, you might not understand.  Health food in the 1980’s was all about tofu and strange rices.  That’s my 6 year old self using the word ‘strange’ to describe what was like just brown or black rice… more toothsome and nutritious and, to my horror,  not nearly as buttered as white rice.

My Favorite True Crime Podcasts

My Favorite True Crime Podcasts

This is a post about what I do at home while reading the newspaper and eating spicy eggs and rice on a Sunday morning.  It involves listening to podcasts about crime and murder.  If that last sentence left you with wide eyes and a face or terror… I know.  It’s ok.  More food on Thursday.  Carry on and good day.

Now…

Do you want to talk to me about a murder mystery episode of 20/20 from 2002?

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

Hello sweet friends!

It feels like ages ago now, but last Tuesday was fine (and really quite fat) indeed.  We celebrated the last day of Mardi Gras in grand fashion with the last of the beads and parades and floats and headdresses and my goodness we really did it up.  It’s my third Mardi Gras as a resident of New Orleans and I’m slowly getting my footing.  Knowing the traffic and having friends with clean bathrooms close to the parade route feels like a life success in itself.

I hope today is a day for you to take some for yourself.

The Ultimate Care Package with Turkey Meatballs and Jam Hand Pies

How to say ‘Congratulations you’re moving in together!’.  How to say, ‘Life is hard, but you’ve got this and I’m here to help!’.  How to say ‘Thank you for having my back!’.  How to say, ‘Thank you for coming over and taking that giant spider out of my shower!’.  How to say ‘ I care for you and the proof is in the meatballs and the hand pies and the chocolate and the jam!’.

Peanut Butter Black and Tan Cookies

Peanut Butter Black and Tan Cookies

When you grow up in a family of very enthusiastic eaters, you come to realize that everyone has their own preferred flavor.

My flavor was strawberry.  I like strawberry just fine but I think the obsession stemmed back to an early Strawberry Shortcake fascination and just stuck.

My dad’s flavor was vanilla… kept safe because no one wanted to fight him for boring vanilla.

My mom’s flavor was peanut butter and chocolate.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

Hello my friends,

It’s the height of Mardi Gras season which you feel very viscerally when you live in New Orleans right now. There’s music in the streets, beads in the trees, and maaaany a tourist-friend in town.  I took a short break from some of the Mardi Gras hoopla to pop over to Austin, TX where I have been successful in eating my weight (or just about) in tacos, seeing some great music, and tooling around town.

Tomatillo Shakshuka and Over Easy Pre-Order!

Tomatillo Shakshuka and Over Easy Pre-Order!

How loosely can we use the term ‘shakshuka’?  For the sake of naming, brunch, and simple deliciousness… I’m going to say we can be loose, very loose.

Shakshuka, typically and traditionally, is a common Israeli dish that involves simmering eggs in a brothy nest of stewed tomatoes and peppers.  The eggs bake in the spiced tomatoes and, served with warm pita, makes for a deeply heart satisfying breakfast.

My shakshuka dish is hardly the traditional bright red, and is clearly sprinkled with more roasted corn than salty feta cheese.
