The Bakehouse Brunch: Classic Hurricane and Brandy Milk Punch

The Bakehouse Brunch: Classic Hurricane and Brandy Milk Punch

Let’s get down to the magical part of Brunch.  The weekend loophole that has us cocktailing along with our coffee!

I’m so thrilled you’ve joined me in this Bakehouse Brunch endeavor.  Today we’re taking two New Orleans classics: The Classic Hurricane and the Brandy Milk Punch and making them afternoon enjoyable.  Fruity sweet and creamy decadent because we love options with our Brunch.

It’s been absolutely incredible to partner with KitchenAid to bring you this Brunch series and share my dream kitchen with you.

Homemade Eggnog with Rum

Homemade Eggnog with Rum

I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you.  I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you. I love you I love you I love you I love you.

That’s what I’m mumbling in the corner, clutching my small glass of homemade eggnog, with an ambitious eggnog mustache.

Bowl of Food: Pan Seared Salmon and Roasted Vegetables

Bowl of Food: Pan Seared Salmon and Roasted Vegetables

We’re working on dinner. Actual dinner that can live in our lives and on our tables without much fuss.

It’s time for a Bowl of Food.  Simple, layered flavors that fill our bellies and build up our pantries for future meals.

It’s the holidays… I know.  But we still need to feed ourselves reasonable food so all of the cookies and egg nog make sense in our system.

Dorie’s Princeton Gingersnap Cookies

Dorie’s Princeton Gingersnap Cookies

If these cookies were in a game of Truth or Dare they would invariably choose DARE. Every time. No hesitation. These cookies are bold enough, unflappable really… ready to go streaking through the quad.  Life of the party. You know.  These cookies are super casual like that.

Did you ever play Truth or Dare? Good grief what a nightmare game for an introverted, 22 year old college freshmen girl who lived off campus and was just trying to make some new friends.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

Hello my friends!

I hope you are well in this weekend with a good pair of thick socks and extra cream in your coffee.  The chill is here, wouldn’t you say?

This past week I was lucky enough to tour the White House kitchen and talk about gingerbread with the White House Executive Pastry Chef Susan Morrison. It was surreal and really such an incredible opportunity.  We decorated gingerbread cookies together… I promptly broke several cookies as she was demonstrating… so, oops.

The Bakehouse Brunch: Butter Roasted Chicken + Fresh Corn Johnny Cakes

The Bakehouse Brunch: Butter Roasted Chicken + Fresh Corn Johnny Cakes

I want to be known for two things in life.  I want to be known as the girl who has the dad who makes the best Sweet Potato Pie… and I want to be known as the girl who lives in the house that always smells like roasted chicken and sweets.  What would be better?  Little else, I’m sure of it.

I think I get this instinct from my grandmother, whose house always smelled like Cornish game hens and some sort of buttery pound cake.

Bowl of Food: Thai Beef with Fresh Vegetables

Bowl of Food: Thai Beef with Fresh Vegetables

There’s something about a bowl of food that feels more sustaining, more comforting, more sincere than a flat ol’ plate of food.

It’s ample, piled, and without pretensions- layering what might be the last of the rice in the pantry with what likely are almost-forgotten vegetables in the refrigerator into something special, someway somehow.  Sure, we’ll pick up some fresh ground beef at the grocery, or a knob of fresh ginger if we’re out… but the root of these bowl-of-food meals is that we’re using what we have while we have it, making a whole lotta something from what we might have thought was not much at all.

DOVE Hot Chocolate Cake with Peppermint Marshmallows

DOVE Hot Chocolate Cake with Peppermint Marshmallows

We’ve got a lot of energy to direct these days.  It’s like a symphony of wrapping presents, hanging holiday decorations, keeping your cat from dangling from all of the hanging holiday decorations (personal problem), gathering, inviting, baking, potlucking… this time of year is ample in its commitments and enjoyment, really.

I have a proposal.  Let’s spend some of our good energy making this extra delicious, over-the-top holiday cake.  Think chocolate on chocolate, with melted chocolate and fluffy peppermint.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

Hello my friends!

This week in the life of Joy the Baker:

I learned that homemade eggnog is essentially chilled ice cream base with rum and nutmeg and if someone would have told me that unchurned ice cream was acceptable to drink a long time ago, I’d be in a heap of trouble.

Homemade eggnog recipe coming up soon.

I traveled up to New York again to teach a quick cooking class which has me brainstorming all the way I want to real-life gather with you in 2017.
