Cinnamon Roll King Cake

Cinnamon Roll King Cake

Most roads in New Orleans these days lead to King Cake.

We’re in that precious month between King’s Day (January 6th) and Fat Tuesday where we eat as much and as many King Cakes as we can.  We King Cake our doughnuts (see District Doughnuts), we buy mini cakes from the grocery store, send cakes to our friends in other states… it’s an extravaganza and a tradition.  Who would be be to snub tradition.

A few years ago, during what was my first full Mardi Gras in this fine city, I made a more traditional King Cake.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

It has been a doozy of a week and I hope you’re taking some time to scramble some eggs, char some tortillas, sip from your coffee cup, and take some time for yourself this morning.

Here’s how we lived this week:

•  We’re here.  All of us, and we’re not going anywhere. (Actually we’re going to go home to our families and jobs, but we’re like this in spirit all the damn time because we can multi-task, beast-mode like you wouldn’t believe.)  Pictures From The Women’s March Around the World.

My Favorite Places to Dine Alone in New Orleans

My Favorite Places to Dine Alone in New Orleans

“Table for one, please.”

“Oh just one?”

“Yes, table for one, please.”

I find myself repeating this phrase often, not for lack of dinner company, but mostly because I really love eating out alone.  It feels indulgent to me, and liberating, and exactly like I skipped that conversation that usually goes something like this: “Where do you want to go for dinner?”  “I dunno, where do you want to go?”  “Does your mother hate me?”  Silence….

Chilaquiles Frittata Bake

Chilaquiles Frittata Bake

It’s often right before dinner is served that I start to think about breakfast.  It’s about 12 minutes before hangry energy sets in, 10 minutes before I gussy up a plate of food for myself, and 20 minutes before I’m full once again and breakfast is a distant future thought.

There’s that special time when I try to sort through the clutter of my fridge in my mind’s eye and dream up tomorrow’s future.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

It feels like surreal times.  On more that one occasion I’ve been sitting alone, lost in thoughts that range from essential survival to entirely trivial, and had to squeeze my eyes shut and shake my head, letting some of the realities of our current times out of my brain.  News is increasingly bizarre and entirely troubling and we can’t ignore it as much as we’d like.

Good grief.

This week, just after the conviction and sentencing of the twisted, misguided and small-minded young man who killed nine people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina… I was reminded of the eulogy that President Obama gave for senior pastor and state senator Clementa C.

Moussaka Lasagna Roll Ups

Moussaka Lasagna Roll Ups

Suzonne invited me over for Moussaka.  I nodded my head yes… fairly certain that she was talking about food, absolutely sure she was a stellar cook, and very clear in the fact if someone was inviting me over for homemade dinner I would be there in a heartbeat.

Truth be told (and aren’t we truth tellers around here?), I didn’t know what Moussaka was until I walked through the door and smelled a mixture of cinnamon spices and savory meat.

What To Do In New Orleans, Winter 2017

What To Do In New Orleans, Winter 2017

Surely you’re coming to visit New Orleans this Winter!

We’re here with the Gumbo warm and the bread fresh.  We’ve got the oil hot for frying, and we’ve turned our sunsets to a glowy, pink and purple.  The champagne is cold, the Oaks are sparkling with moss, and we’ve always got a King Cake on the kitchen counter.

I make it sound dreamy, don’t I?  Well, to visit this place is dreamy.

Bowl of Food: Baked Eggplant Parmesan with Creamy Polenta

Bowl of Food: Baked Eggplant Parmesan with Creamy Polenta

Here’s a little bonus to old age that they don’t tell you about:  you start to enjoy some of the foods you once thought you hated.

See:  eggplant.

It is in fact delicious when cooked to crisp and tender in the oven.  My twelve year old self would roll her eyes in disbelief.  She thinks it’s a used dish sponge masquerading as food on a plate. It’s the texture we have to wrangle, and now we know what’s up

It’s dinner.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

Just a girl from California in the Deep South during the first real freeze of the Winter.  Some of my plants froze to plant popsicles and my heater is broken and I’ve layered every blanket my mom has knitted since 1995 atop my bed.  Tron is here, equally confused.  Please come knocking sometime next Thursday when the city has thawed back to tropical.

Or… I’ll make a lot of tea and roast everything in my refrigerator.

How has your week been?

My Kitchen Resolutions

My Kitchen Resolutions

It seems all too easy for me, this time of year especially, to find my inner dialogue swirl around what I can and can’t eat… what I should and should not put in my body… clean food this / dirty food that… drink more water, eat more kale, for goodness sake STOP thinking about tater tots you heathen!

It’s not so much exhausting as it is tedious and banal.  And really… I know I can do better and drink more water, sure… but I’d like to focus on bringing more intention and care to my kitchen life rather than simply trying to eat kale instead of tater tots.
