Baked Coconut Crusted Fish Tacos

Baked Coconut Crusted Fish Tacos

Tacos; everyday.

Because corn tortillas last an astonishingly long time in the refrigerator and taste just as good toasted as they do fried.

Because eggs go in tortillas. Because, sure kale can go in tortillas. Because, yea toss those lentils in there.  Or that smear of peanut butter, or that quarter of an avocado from the other day, or maybe just a swipe of butter and a sprinkling of salt.

Let It Be Sunday, 130!

Let It Be Sunday, 130!

Hello sweet friends!

I’m back in New Orleans after a few of the most fantastic summer days in Detroit, Michigan.  I stayed long enough to know that I need to return soon for more food and friendship adventures.  It’s a sincere, gritty, distinctly American town and I loved being there.  Also, there are a strong group of food ladies on the hard hustle out in Detroit… it’s super inspiring.  I’ll put up a short post about what I enjoyed in town, knowing that I need to visit again and again.

Lavender Brioche French Toast

Lavender Brioche French Toast

We’re going to take the scenic route to breakfast.

Don’t worry, I do this often in life… usually it’s because I’m stubborn and I don’t like to use the navigation app on my phone.

By way of breakfast, we’re taking the scenic route by first… making a casual loaf of really lovely lavender brioche bread.

Ok yea. It’s a scenic detour that requires heart and soul, time and self-patience.

10 Things I Do To Survive Airplane Travel

10 Things I Do To Survive Airplane Travel

At least once a month I’ll find myself in a line at the airport, shoving a small container of my folded belongings through an x-ray machine hoping they make it, without suspicion, to meet me on the other side.  I know what city I’m in based on airport tiles and carpets.  I have no shame attached to occasionally gate-checking a bag.   I will sit patiently and wait for the system to do it’s thing around me.

Let It Be Sunday, 129!

Let It Be Sunday, 129!

Hello sweet friends.

Happy Sunday. Welcome to it!

Two things:  one about television, one not about television.

I know I’m about a year behind most of y’all but I have to tell you that I just started that television show This is Us, and to those of you who were losing your ever-loving minds about it last year… let me just say, I GET IT.

Double Chocolate Sunflower Cupcakes

Double Chocolate Sunflower Cupcakes

I love catalogs.

Both of my parents worked at the post office when I was young. Beyond that it seemed like they were fans of mail in general because it sure did feel like we got a lot of it, catalogs especially.

Remember the Delia’s catalog? Delia’s was the teenage self that I desperately wanted to be.  Not quite Hot Topic dark, but with an edge that also said… hey, maybe I’m a girl next door, too.

Let It Be Sunday, 128!

Let It Be Sunday, 128!

Hello friends!

I hope this Sunday morning finds you happy and well.  I’ve been in Denver for the past few days where I’ve walked up a mountain with a new friend, eaten the best friend chicken sandwich (not hyperbolic) at Stoweaway, and visited the art museum and botanic gardens.  It’s been a very vacation-y type of vacation but I’ll tell you what… I must have acclimated really well to the below sea level swamps because this altitude has done a number on me.

Strawberry Raspberry Rosé Slushies

Strawberry Raspberry Rosé Slushies

I’ve come to love a New Orleans summer.  It’s an unapologetic heat that will wear you out on the real-quick.  There are coping mechanisms that involve slowing down and drinking every liquid in sight.

It’s all pretty wonderful. By the time an afternoon storm rolls through, you feel like it’s a reward.

I was riding the internet wave the other day and ran across one of those overhead Tasty videos that had clever hands assembling an easy wine slushie cocktail.

Let It Be Sunday, 127!

Let It Be Sunday, 127!

Hello my friends!

Welcome to the weekend!

I spent a few days in Philadelphia last week (it’s been a minute since my last visit) and the city has exploded in overgrown green and off the shoulder dresses and just some very fine summer living.  Good on ya, Philly.  I thought seriously about bringing home some long hots (these are peppers) so I could make my own roast pork sandwiches in New Orleans.

Simple Jam Hand Pies

Simple Jam Hand Pies

I grew up in a family of tremendous home bakers, but I’ll tell you what-  there’s nothing you could tell 8 year old Joy to sway her from the indisputable fact that the best pies came dangerously hot, in a precisely folded paper container, filled with apple flavoring in a delightfully crisp crust from McDonald’s.  The golden arches, where the cheeseburgers taste like candy in the most perplexing way.  The pies, though!  The pies were delicious and if I was lucky enough to have one, it meant that I likely also had french fries in my life so… clearly it was the best of days.

I’ll tell you what’s so great about McDonad’s pies.
