Orange and Chocolate Conchas (Mexican Sweet Breads)

Orange and Chocolate Conchas (Mexican Sweet Breads)

Listen… I LOOOOOVE a baking project.  Catch me on a Saturday morning at 10am and it’s dang possible that I’ll have at least a dozen bagels coming out of the oven  as a result of a wild hair / intense craving that woke me up before the sun.

The warmer and breadier the project, the better. If there’s butter involved… I’m in.

While I’m down to weigh and knead and wait and experiment, you should know that not everything is a project in my kitchen.  Out of sheer laziness I eat more scrambled eggs than any grown woman should and for dinner tonight?  One of those pre-chopped, dressing-included salad bags.  FINE.  GREAT, really.

Let It Be Sunday, 143!

Let It Be Sunday, 143!

My friends!

Welcome to another Sunday. Let it be easy.  Maybe enjoy a warm bagel and sneak in some Halloween candy. Let’s just live it. Geez… ya know?

Here is our week, in parts:

I think this is a really important thing to read:  Potatoes as a Metaphor for Emotional Labor.  It’s a really simple metaphor for a really complex aspect of our emotional / conflicted / feeling hearts.  Let’s all just bring our potatoes to the kitchen, or at least try.

If you don’t know who Senator Jeff Flake is, you might listen to this podcast, The New Washington.

The Fearless Baker’s Brownie Pie

The Fearless Baker’s Brownie Pie

Sometimes the question is…. what can’t I put in a pie crust.  Prompted by Erin McDowell’s new book The Fearless Baker (GET IT!) the answer is definitely not brownie batter because BROWNIE BATTER IN PIE CRUST suddenly makes all the sense in the world.

Two desserts into one buttery-gooey dessert that we’ll top with ice cream because this life is for living, ya feel me?

LET’S!

We’ll start with pie crust – where most fine things start this time of year.

I’m no stranger to pie crust, and usually use a cold buttermilk in my crust.

Let It Be Sunday, 142!

Let It Be Sunday, 142!

Hello sweet friends!

I hope this Sunday proves to be a restful cure to bleary eyes and weary backs.  That’s what I’m hoping for myself and I’ll just pass those hopes on to you.  It’s a short list today, but I promise this week will have some recipe gems and good vibes.  There’s more to come.  Here’s our Sunday reading for here and now:

I first listened to this story on The Daily Podcast (linked in the story as well).  Give it a read / listen.

Let It Be Sunday, 141!

Let It Be Sunday, 141!

Hello my friends!

These aren’t easy days, are they?  When I’m paying attention, it feels like chaos in the world.  When I’m not paying attention (aka, when I’m Watching Real Housewives of New Jersey) I feel guilty that I’m not paying attention.  Here’s what I do know from the paying attention part of my week.  We need one another and right now that means donating any extra dollars we can to our friends in Puerto Rico and Northern California.

9 Great New Cookbooks for Fall 2017

9 Great New Cookbooks for Fall 2017

Y’all!  It’s that very exciting time of year when we get to add new cookbooks to our stacks.  I don’t say this lightly.  Lord knows I have stacks on stacks.  If cookbook were Louboutins (why would they be, though) I’d have a closet like Lisa Vanderpump.  Instead I have stacks on stacks of cookbooks on shelves and tables and buffets and desks.  I’m working on a library and there are more still I’m adding to my collection.

Let It Be Sunday, 140!

Let It Be Sunday, 140!

Hello friends!

I’m writing this to you on Saturday morning, anticipating Hurricane Nate to move over and through us this evening into tomorrow.  If New Orleans has taught me anything it’s that everything will be fine, or everything will go sideways.  You just never know… so I’ve brought out my emergency kit and camping stove, emergency candles and lanterns, and I’ve pre-ground my coffee for the next few days in case the power goes out because priorities.

A Story of How to Make Brown Sugar From Scratch

A Story of How to Make Brown Sugar From Scratch

Sometimes… and tell me if you can relate to this, I feel like I literally do not know how to be a person in the world.  I hate to use the world literally hyperbolically but I think the word might actually have a place here.  Save for my lungs that breathe and heart that beats thankfully on their own, I feel like I do not know how to be a thinking feeling person at times like these..

Let It Be Sunday, 139!

Let It Be Sunday, 139!

Hello friends!  Welcome to another Sunday.  Good grief we’ve earned it.

I hope this finds you happy and well, with a few minutes to click open some links to read today and through the week.  This marks the 139th installment of Let It Be Sunday posts!  While they’re my favorite to write, I’m thinking I’ll only keep a few editions up at a time… meaning that I’m going to go back and archive all of the past installments.
