What’s Your Comfort Food?
Hello friends!
I need your help with two things! Truth be told, I need your help with a lot more than two things but we’ll keep it simple today.
First thing: Sometimes the world is so sideways and unexpected that it’s hard to come here and just be like… hey guys- BROWNIES, and then move right along with life. You know what I’m saying? These days down South have left so many people in need, have left so many people suffering, and feeling tender and frightened and in need of comforts- basic and otherwise.

Let It Be Sunday, 134!
I never much enjoyed Labor Day. It feels like the unofficial farewell to summer and I’ve never been very good at goodbyes. You know this to be true if you’ve ever been to a party with me. I’m notorious for the silent peace out. And… the thing is! I realize that it’s not even Labor Day yet! That’s how much I dread it…. it’s already on my mind.
With that in mind, I hope you’re out and about this weekend enjoy the last of these August days.

Thick S’mores Brownies
I’ve spent a lot of time this summer trying to do things better. Right now most of that energy goes into learning how to make beautiful flowers out of paper (more on that soon!), but sometimes those energies are directed towards chocolate.
These are brownies I’ve made before. Years ago, and it’s been too long since they’ve been revisited. This time around I’m making the brownies thicker, more gooey, adding more chocolate and slicing generously.

6 Of My Favorite Summer Salads
Hello friends!
These are the days when I start to feel a little sluggish in the kitchen. I’m either eating plain pasta with a very ambitious amount of butter and parmesan or I’m making salads that range from simple to somewhat choppy.
I feel like we’ll be making stews and risotto and pumpkin bread in no time but until then, we’re on the salad train. We’ve got fruit and nuts, eggs and seeds and lots of citrus.

Let It Be Sunday, 133!
This new normal that we’re tasked with, where people use cars as weapons and our politics continue to deeply enrage some and barely elicits a shrug from others is perplexing at best. It’s hard. It’s hard or all of us, isn’t it? Good grief. These old wounds are so hard to heal.
I went to the beach.
Here’s what we know. We know that the sun will rise and the waves will crash and we’ll keep breathing until we don’t.

Ten Small Ways To Be Happy
We all need a little spark of a reminder sometimes. A little confetti in the air. A little whipped cream on top. A little something-something. Here are ten small and simple ways to be happy in any given day. When all else fails- champagne for breakfast and doughnuts for dessert.
1 • Do a chore that you’ve been putting off and immediately TREAT YOURSELF. Maybe a door needs replacing or a floor needs deep cleaning or all the laundry needs putting away.

Let It Be Sunday, 132!
Hello my friends!
Welcome to what we hope to make a fine day in the world. Let’s be kind to one another, remembering that we’re all beating hearts and soaring souls in the world seeking love and safety. Good grief. If someone near you has forget these basic fundamentals, remind them with care. Again… good grief.
Here are some of the events of the week, everything but the hot-heads with the codes to nuclear warheads here and there:

Gumbo Poutine
It’s going to take me years, likely, the rest of my life to master the nuance of New Orleans cooking. Luckily, it’s a delicious road to travel.
I’ve been making gumbo here and there for the past year. Getting a roux just right takes trust and patience, a can of beer and a good chat with a friend. More on that later.
Gumbo, with it’s incredibly flavorful, gravy-live broth seemed a cheeky topping for French fries and cheese curds.

Let It Be Sunday, 131!
Hello sweet friends,
How has this week been for you? I feel like I’m in observer mode these past two-handful of days, watching people sort of tumble around me with this and that. I’m likely tumbling around too, but I feel like I need to take more in that I put out. Also, it’s August and maybe I’m just lethargic.
I’m looking forward to this Fall with 80% excitement and 20% dread.

My Ten Favorite Things in Detroit
It was about 4 hours into my visit to Detroit that I realized I was in one of America’s greatest cities. Have you spent some time in Detroit? Did you fall in love with the architecture, the heart, the real the raw, the great people?
When I only have a few days in a city, I have to hit the ground running and there’s no sense / not much time to linger in a tiny hotel room (Trumbull and Porter is pretty great if you need a place).
