CAMP JOY Episode 4: Pressed But Not Bothered

CAMP JOY Episode 4: Pressed But Not Bothered

Hello friends and welcome do Day 4 of CAMP JOY!

Everyday at camp is sweet but today feels especially great!  We’re getting out into the garden!

I’ve always thought of myself as a person who has not a green thumb, but in fact a black thumb – a thumb of death when it comes plants.  This is a story I’ve told myself for most of my adult life up until I bought The Bakehouse 4 years ago.  I had a backyard and thought – well, let’s see!

Turns out I can grow plants.

Let It Be Sunday, 284!

Let It Be Sunday, 284!

Hello friends!

I’ve had a doozy of a week trying to help the big fluff Tron through some fast onset and life threatening bladder troubles.  It’s just the saddest thing picking up a floppy weak cat, throwing him (most gently) in the car and carefully, with minimal mayhem, speeding to the vet.  I got fussed for not wearing a mask and they’re absolutely right but honestly I’m surprised I even had a shirt on with the panic I left the house in.  Will Tron get better?  Probably?

Notes to Self

Notes to Self

What we have here is an accidental diary, friends.  I really do have to marvel and shake my head in absolute embarrassment at the old posts here on Joy the Baker.  It turns out being human together, and on the internet together for so long is both mortifying and comforting.

We’ve been at this Joy the Baker-ing together for nearly 13 years now and just about every post I ever thought to write still exists here.  It’s comedy.

Let It Be Sunday, 283!

Let It Be Sunday, 283!

Hello friends welcome to a Sunday!

It feels like it’s been a week ruled by the ever-growing, never satisfied to-do list, but there’s something about stepping outside to water the plants  or wash the car that slows everything down – mostly because the humidity is exhausting.  It’s well designed down here in that way – summers are meant to be slow and the air itself will slow you right down if you haven’t made that choice for yourself.

Praline Bacon BLT Sandwiches

Praline Bacon BLT Sandwiches

Who am I to tell you how to make a sandwich?

Oh… just a girl who loves bacon and brown sugar and toasted pecans.

I’ll tell you the secrets to the perfect BLT sandwich:

candy the bacon // toast the bread // spice the mayo // add just about too much mayo to the sandwich // season the tomatoes // and the biggest secret of all: have someone else make the sandwich for you.

Sandwiches taste best when someone else makes them.

Camp Joy Episode 3: S’more Care

Camp Joy Episode 3: S’more Care

Hello friends and welcome to Day 3 of CAMP JOY!

Today we’re giving and receiving a summer camp highlight – the ever-coveted CARE PACKAGE!

My parents were sweet enough to send me a care package from Los Angeles and the rule is, when you get a care package you have to give a care package and… we’re nothing if not very strict etiquette followers!

My care package for gifting consists of three things:

• S’mores Granola Bars inspired by Molly Yeh’s Choose Your Own Adventure Granola Bars.

Let It Be Sunday, 282!

Let It Be Sunday, 282!

Friends, hello!  Happy Sunday!

I slightly relaxed my grip on quarantine life for the first time in months the past few weeks and woop – not a great idea. I came in close range to the virus and locked it aaaallll back up.  A test today showed a negative result, thank goodness, but I’m gonna keep it on lock for the foreseeable future.  It’s a wild world and we aren’t out of the woods yet.

I’ve taken it back to some of my early quarantine activities – working from random places throughout the house.

Cherry and Lemon Ice Box Cake

Cherry and Lemon Ice Box Cake

In these crazy days? We need to have our boundaries clearcut.  I make myself a to-do list every day. I have a list of things I’d like to do to take care of myself each month, ya know…. emotionally, physically, financially because I’m  grown.  I also have a list of ‘absolutely nots’.  A causal list of things that are a no-go for me here and now.  On the list of ABSOLUTELY NOTS this week:

•  Turning on the oven.

•  Leaving my house at noon for any reason other than ice cream or sno-balls.

• Wearing a bra.

• Settling for less than I deserve (though that’s on the list every week).

It’s July in New Orleans and we aren’t stressing the summer weather but we also aren’t adding to it with ovens and bras, ya know?

Maybe you’re feeling the weight of summer too.

Camp Joy Episode 2: Sun Tea and Ice Cream Treats

Camp Joy Episode 2: Sun Tea and Ice Cream Treats

Hello friends and welcome to DAY 2 of CAMP JOY

This week we’re taking it all the way easy and making some of my favorite lazy summer treats!

I tell a few stories about my mom this episode. She’s the best person.

Mom introduced me to sun tea and taught me how to be gracious about ice cream cones.  Two very important life lessons.

This week at camp we’re making SUN TEA.

Sun Tea is brewed using room temperature water, tea bags or leaves, and good ol’ hot summer sun.

To make, place tea bags or loose leaf tea in a pitcher.  1 tea bag or 2 tablespoons of loose leaf tea per cup of water.  You can totally eyeball it.  Cover and allow to steep in the afternoon sun for several hours until tea is flavorful, about 4 hours depending on the summer heat you’re workin’ with.

I used a tea pitcher and this Strawberry Hibiscus Herbal Tea.

Let It Be Sunday, 281!

Let It Be Sunday, 281!

Hello dear friends!

We’re in deep. Deep into this year. Deep into this summer.

This morning I got deep into my pantry for a major cleaning. The state of my pantry is often the state of my brainspace and these past few weeks I’ve just been shoving things everywhichwhere hoping to remember it, hoping to keep track of it, hoping it would all sort itself out.  It only got worse until I took a pause, a breath, and several hours so sort, purge, combine, and label.

We’re back baby.  Clear eyes, full hearts, clean pantry.

Except we’re still deep in it.  It’s ok to be just ok sometimes.  There are moments of crisp, clear, OKness and this is one that I will revel in.

How are you?
