Black Eyed Peas with Cornbread Dumplings

Black Eyed Peas with Cornbread Dumplings

Hello friends!

We’re a few days past Labor Day and that means we’re instantly ready for stews and sweaters and pumpkin with our spice.  I get it. We’re ready for any kind of familiar change that will liven up and steady this heck of a year. I don’t really mind a few more weeks  in my white dress and a few more steamy walks down to the river but heck if I’m ready to make it out of fire and hurricane season.

Let’s fall back into some of fall’s comforts.

Let It Be Sunday, 288!

Let It Be Sunday, 288!

Hello friends, good morning!

I’m taking a little break from our weekly reads today. My internet is down.  The support technician man was condescending to me for a solid 40 minutes on the phone trying to fix it this week. My generous self imagines a world where he has to tell people how to unplug and plug in very basic things all day long and that’s got to be very frustrating so OK SIR I’LL LET IT SLIDE.  You know when someone asks you a question but doesn’t leave any space for you to answer it?  That’s a particular person and, as I’ve learned to say down South, “bless his heart”.

Thank you for taking that on.

Instead of our weekly list of links, the invitation is to:

•  Go outside, sit and listen to the world.

•  Re-pot that plant you’ve been meaning to re-home.  (This is me @ me.)

•  Go outside and lay on the ground.

The Late Summer Gluten Free Plum Galette

The Late Summer Gluten Free Plum Galette

I made us a quick little something for the weekend.  It’s a gluten-free summer fruit galette that I ate steadily for two days straight.

Truth be told, my cooking in these late days of summer has been slow and plodding.  I mean… it’s August in New Orleans. Of course it’s slow and plodding. We’ve been carrying around this humidity blanket for months now.

We don’t have fancy photography today.  We just have a few casual shots from testing this recipe one Saturday morning.  It was pleasing to me and I thought it might be pleasing to you this coming weekend.

This tart is very much like A Summer Tomato Galette of just a few weeks past so… you can see I’ve taken on a theme.

Let It Be Sunday, 287!

Let It Be Sunday, 287!

Hello friend! It’s another Sunday to melt into.

It was with extreme caution that I flew home to Los Angeles to see my family this week. It had been one pandemic, one quarantine, countless Facetimes, one sick cat, and two dodging of hurricanes since I had seem my family so… it was time. Dad is making cookies and mom and I are crafting the same Hello Bargello kit on the patio.

CAMP JOY Episode 6: Po’ Boys and Goodbyes

CAMP JOY Episode 6: Po’ Boys and Goodbyes

Friends – this is it! This is our last day of CAMP JOY!

What does the last day of camp mean to you?  For me it’s singing John Denver around the campfire, quietly crying at the thought of how much I’m going to miss my new best friends.  As I write this, Hurricane Laura is making it’s way to southwestern Louisiana and east Texas and that thought alone is enough to bring tears to my eyes.  I’m thinking of Arnaudville (the little town along Bayou Teche where I filmed this episode) and everyone battening down their hatches.  This is a resilient, and there’s a lot of love and care here so we’ll find our way through.

Let’s honor Louisiana and soak up this last bit of summer at camp.

Everybody’s After School Cookies

Everybody’s After School Cookies

Friends, hello.

I’ve been thinking about you so much as you send your babies off to their tiny desks in the den for school this fall.  Literally, how do you do it? Our girl Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere sprayed glitter in her daughter’s hair as they prepped for the first day of school, at home. My friend Toby (hey bb!) has the sweetest desk for her biggest tot.  I see you out there, making it work, making it feel special, doing what you have to do in the year of our Lord 2020.

My very humble offering for this occasion is, cookies.

Let It Be Sunday, 286

Let It Be Sunday, 286

Hello friends.

It’s Sunday, how we doin’?

It’s a sunny Saturday afternoon as I write this. I’m drinking peppermint tea on the couch, trying to sort in my mind whether or not I have everything I need sorted for two possible hurricanes next week.  Water, red beans, house deed, a full tank of gas. Mostly I’m stealing myself for power outages and the possibility of inescapable heat.

So many times these past few months I think back to a jacket I saw a woman wearing this past Mardi Gras.  The back was embroidered with “I’m ok.

A Summer Tomato Galette

A Summer Tomato Galette

Last weekend I took the long way to breakfast.

I was committed to having a slow Saturday morning which meant one too many cups of coffee, taking a few aimless laps around my house, and discovering a languishing tomato hiding among the oranges in the fruit bowl.

What to do with one fine tomato?  Commit to a galette. Once I was locked in I happened to find another tomato in the crisper and a few wrinkled cherry tomatoes that had been pushed to the back of the fridge.

CAMP JOY Episode 5: Not Leavin’ On A Jet Plane

CAMP JOY Episode 5: Not Leavin’ On A Jet Plane

Hello sweet friends and welcome to another fine day at CAMP JOY!

It’s Day 5 at camp and we’re packing our bags and going…. exactly nowhere.  Nope. We’re staying put.  We’re not calling an Uber to the airport. We’re not leaving on a jet plane.

Today at camp is all about connecting with the people we love and miss the best way we can this year.  We’re leaning on technology to take us home!

I’ve been missing my mom and dad out in California so I’m in my New Orleans kitchen making tacos that taste like home.  These are Dime Store Tacos, a recipe that came from my dad’s sister Aunt Dede when she worked at the lunch counter in the neighborhood drug store.  They served beef and potato tacos – the potatoes a secret extender to the pricey beef.  She started making the same tacos at home for her family and that was it!

Let It Be Sunday, 285!

Let It Be Sunday, 285!

Hello friends!

Thank you THANK YOU for all the kindness and words of wisdom you offered me and Tron last week. We feel ya and so appreciate your thoughts! Tron is home and sleepy and resting easy. I’ve got my hawk eyes on him, but I think he’s on the mend. These little buddies mean so much to us, don’t they?  I’m thankful he’s on the upswing. This is a picture of Tron both sleeping and trying to eat tuna from my salad at the same time.

This past week I spend a few days camping in Arkansas while Tron was at the vet.
