INKTOBER // DAY 2

The pride of Gainesville, Florida.

One of my favorites, a gem of his you may not know: “It’ll All Work Out.”

Click here to support LAS VEGAS VICTIMS' FUND organized by Steve Sisolak:

As I lined up for my flight to the East Coast on Friday, two young women almost accidentally boarded our plane. At the last second, they realized they were one line over from their correct gate, which was boarding for Las Vegas. They barely made it, but the gate agent let them board. They seemed like country music fans who had been “pre-gaming” at the airport bar, getting ready for a fun weekend in Vegas. Now I’m wondering if they survived the horror that rained down on the tens of thousands of people who just wanted to see their favorite musicians in concert and have a good time.

You can clink the link at the top to donate to
the Clark County Commission Chair Steve Sisolak’s GoFundMe fundraiser to “be used to
provide relief and financial support to the victims and families of the
horrific Las Vegas mass shooting.”

You can go to this link to find ways to donate blood
to help the victims. As the article states, “You can still help if you
are in another part of the country; your blood
might not make it all the way to Las Vegas, but it can go to a hospital
near you, freeing up supplies somewhere else.” A friend posted that the
Las Vegas mayor said if you donate blood in L.A. tonight or tomorrow it
will likely end up in Las Vegas—I haven’t been able to confirm that
yet, but the above quote makes it seem to be a worthwhile way to help
regardless.

I’m saddened, sickened, and angered… but this kind of horror is increasingly “normal” in our country: the largest mass shooting in modern U.S. history; the 273rd mass shooting in the U.S. so far in 2017, with 59 dead and over 500 injured; another shooter from the group that has committed the most mass shootings in the U.S. since 1982—white males.

Shaun King’s article on the "White Privilege of the Lone Wolf Shooter” is poignant and well worth your time to read. And take a look at the graphics in the Guardian’s piece “1,516 Mass Shootings in 1,735 Days: America’s Gun Crisis – In One Chart.”

Taking my new Nora Vasconcellos deck back to its natural habitat in New England. I’ve skated a lot of Welcome decks over the years and this shape is definitely my favorite. Congratulations on going pro and on such an awesome deck, Nora! ⚡️

More New York Comic Con news! I am thrilled to be doing a signing with Irene Koh, the artist for The Legend of Korra comics, and Janet Varney, the voice actor who plays Korra. We’ll be at the Dark Horse Comics booth, #1636, on Saturday 10/7 from 10:30–11:30 AM. Dark Horse will be giving away posters of Irene’s above artwork, and they’ll have copies of “Turf Wars: Part One” for sale, along with Avatar comics and our various art books, I would assume. Hope to see you there!

(And if you missed my previous post about my other NYCC signing on Friday 10/6 at 10:30 AM, you can get the info here.)

How you can help hurricane victims in Puerto Rico

How you can help hurricane victims in Puerto Rico:

3.4 million people are without power in Puerto Rico after the devastation of Hurricane Maria, and it could be up to six months before power is restored. You can find several good ways to donate to relief efforts in the link above. In the link below from Vox, you can read more about how these mass power outages threaten public health: https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/9/25/16361050/puerto-rico-power-outages-deadly

I’m excited to announce I’ll be doing a signing at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 6th, from 10:30–11:30 AM at the First Second Books booth, #2239. We’ll be giving away free copies of this 11x17″ poster for my upcoming graphic novel series Threadworlds during the signing. If you want to bring Avatar/Korra stuff I’ll be happy to sign that too.

TO BE CLEAR: Threadworlds: Volume One is not finished, nor is there is a release date yet. I’m still hard at work on the layouts, which should be finished this year; then I’ll be tackling the final pages and color next year. But I’m excited to share the above artwork with you to give you an updated look at the characters and a glimpse into the world; and to poke my head up out of the ground for a bit to say hi at NYCC!

(I’ll also being doing another signing with Dark Horse at NYCC on Saturday 8/7. I’ll post about that separately soon.)

See you soon! Love, Bryan

Here's how to help Mexico after another deadly earthquake

Here's how to help Mexico after another deadly earthquake:

As I’m sure you’ve heard, there was a devastating and deadly earthquake in Mexico City yesterday, a mere twelve days after another devastating and deadly earthquake in Chiapas and Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. The article above has links for various ways to donate to the relief efforts.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts to donate to Topos.mx, “The Moles” organization that was founded after thousands died in the 1985 Mexican earthquake. However, their website does not seem to be working right now, but you can donate to them via PayPal:

1 - Login into your Paypal account
2 - Tools > Send Payments > Pay for goods or services
3 - Type this account: donativos@brigada-rescate-topos.org
4 - Click Next > Type the amount you are willing to donate
5 - Click Continue > Choose how you want to pay
6 - Click Next > Click SEND PAYMENT NOW

You can also donate to relief efforts for Chiapas/Oaxaca earthquake and/or the Mexico City earthquake through the Paz Project & the El Paso Community Foundation: https://epcf.org/mxquake

bryankonietzko:

I hope everyone had a fun Halloween! I dressed as my favorite photographer in the solar system, the Cassini orbiter, in celebration of its ‘E-21’ Fly-by last week through the icy geyser plumes of Enceladus, Saturn’s sixth-largest moon. My hasty use of the Captain America shield for the Huygens probe turned this into something of a “Captain Cassini” costume.

To celebrate my love of Avatar/Korra and Astronomy, I am reposting one of my favorite images of all time… Bryan Konietzko as Cassini.

HA! You beat me to it… I was going to say “farewell” to Cassini, but that seems like a weird thing to say to something that just violently disintegrated, so I’ll go with “Goodbye, and thanks for all the incredible images and data!”

2-cents:

So incredibly fortunate to have spent the majority of my career working alongside the one and only Andrea Romano. Justice league was the first time I was invited to sit in and watch a recording session and Andreas professionalism and commitment to excellence were like nothing I’d ever seen before. Truly an inspiration. To have had Voltron be her final session and to have been able to share in such a special moment was a real honor. Retirement ain’t gonna know what hit it!

THANK YOU, ANDREA! Your talent and expertise were such vital parts of making Avatar and Korra come to life and have heart and soul—and I know the casts would agree. Cheers to your incredible career, and thank you for letting us be a part of it. ❤️
