White Elephants

a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3..." style="float: left; padding-right: 20px">White Elephant SurpriseWhite Elephant Surprise by Alyssa Mayley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s Thanksgiving and Grandma says they’re going to have a white elephant exchange for Christmas. Billy is a bit confused about what she means. What follows is the delightful adventure of a young boy in his search for a white elephant. The colors in the story are bright and cheerful. The characters are fun and believable. Every child and every library should have a copy of WHITE ELEPHANT SURPRISE. by Alyssa Mayley. Young readers might even go in search of a white elephant of his or her own. This is a lovely book that will have children laughing and also thinking. So get to reading. Enjoy.

Mystery and Suspense

Murder, Just Because: A Detective Quaid Mystery: The Return of The Snowman (Detective Quaid Mysteries Book 5) Murder, Just Because: A Detective Quaid Mystery: The Return of The Snowman by Yolanda Renee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Murder Just Because, A Detective Quaid mystery: The Return of the Snowman is the fifth book in the series. I haven’t read the first four books but kept hearing how good this one was so I had to try it. I purchased the eBook and discovered that everyone was right. And then I won a paperback copy of the book. Lucky me, because I’ll probably read it again. I do that with books I really enjoy to make sure I haven’t missed anything important.

This is a story that will stay with you, at least it has me, for a long time. Warning: be prepared. Some of the scenes are quite graphic, with sex or murder or both. The scenes are handled just right for the story, showing the life of a serial killer. I kept whispering, “No, no, don’t do it.” And closed my eyes.

Yolanda Renee has done a great job with Murder Just Because. Even the title warns the reader. If you have a weak stomach, take care. I recommend the book for readers who have a tough stomach. Happy Reading.

Adventure Exploring

Bubba and Squirt's Mayan Adventure Bubba and Squirt's Mayan Adventure by Sherry Ellis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you’ve read the book Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China, by Sherry Ellis, you met Bubba and Squirt, brother and sister, who dug a hole with the magic shovel Grandpa gave them and ended up in China. Well, they’re at it again. The latest adventure of the two explorers starts with a dream that Bubba has where his Great-Great-Grandpa Jacob tells him that it’s important to go down the hole again, but not to China. Who are they to argue with their great-great grandpa? So, they're off again. This time they find themselvs not in China but somewhere just as exciting, or perhaps even more so.

In this new place they discover pyramids, a girl, some archaeologists, and other valuable things. What is going on? They soon find out, and it isn’t all good.

Bubba and Squirt are delightful characters and very much like real people. They’re not perfect. They make mistakes, as everyone does. The descriptions of the land and different settings bring the reader right into the scene until you feel like you’re there, experiencing the excitement and events along with the kids.

At the end of the story, the author gives the reader interesting information about the Mayan Indians and a different country, along with recipes, a glossaryy, and other interesting information.
I recommend Bubba and Squirt’s MAYAN ADVENTURE for Middle Grade Readers and older readers Happy Reading.

The Civil War

The story takes place in the fall of 1838 when U. S. soldiers appear at twelve-year-old Tsati’s village and start burning the Cherokees’ homes. The family attempts to escape to freedom. From then on, we follow the family as they live a part of history, later known as the Civil War, that separated families and left many innocent people dead.
The author does a great job showing the fear and uncertainty the characters feel as they struggle to reach safety in what came to be called the Trail of Tears, a fitting name for what the people went through. Imagine yourself in their situation, losing their home, their family separated, not knowing what lay ahead, only that they could not go back to their homes. And then there’s the Stone Man.
STONEMAN AND THE TRAIL OF TEARS is a good read for history lovers and for those that enjoy a great story with characters that touch your heart, at least they did mine. Happy Reading.

Adventure and Mystery

The Red Casket (Del Toro Moon, #2) The Red Casket by Darby Karchut

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After reading Darby Karchut’s DEL TORO MOON a couple years ago, I’ve been waiting for more about the Del Toro family and their talking horses. Yes, their horses are very intelligent. They not only talk but watch over the family when they’re in trouble, which is often. Now, I have THE RED CASKET and, like DEL TORO MOON # 1, I’ve read it twice. I’m just not ready for the story to end, and now I’m waiting for Book #3.

For ten years I’ve been reading books by Darby Karchut, and each one gets better. THE RED CASKET, with twelve-year-old Matt Del Toro, his friend Perry, the horses with their own advice and opinions, his dad, and a witch take, the reader on a wild adventure. There’s mystery, too. What is the Red Casket? And why does the witch want it? Join Matt and the others as they make amazing discoveries. Enjoy.

Your Words

Your Words, Your Life Story: A Journal for Sharing Memories Your Words, Your Life Story: A Journal for Sharing Memories by J Q Rose

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I seem to have a bad memory. People I know sometimes talk about events in their past. Holidays, parties, visiting each other, celebrating Christmas and birthdays together. I bet a lot of you do that too. Except you really young folks who are doing all of these things at the present. Good grief, I do good to remember what I did yesterday.

Now, I've done a lot of genealogy on my family and have discovered a lot about them. But when I try to remember visiting with Grandparents, cousins and such, it's vague, sometimes. And that's where J. Q. Rose's book comes in.

She asks a question. "Why Tell My Story?"
Ah-ha. I'm hooked. Why, indeed? Who cares? She tells us. She also discusses the differences in an autobiography and a memoir. But one thing that is helping me is the timeline. Some blank pages are in the book for readers to discover their memories, and it is helping me. You just mark the years and write the good things that happened that year and also the bad. And I won't say any more because you'll want to find out when you have your own book. Believe me, it's great. Some memories are already coming back to me when I look at a certain year. There are a lot of blank pages to fill up in the book. It's going to be a lot of fun doing it too.

Yesterday Today Always

Yesterday Today Always Yesterday Today Always by Melanie Robertson-King

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

YESTERDAY TODAY ALWAYS
By Melanie Robertson-King

A man who has a purpose in his life has returned to wait for the right moment. Sounds spooky, right? From the very beginning, the reader can see trouble ahead. Why is he so interested in Katherine, who he says belongs to him? What are his plans for her? They don’t look good. Author Melanie Robertson-King weaves a mystery that will keep you turning pages to see what happens next. At least it did me. This story also has a romance that kept me hoping life would turn out good for the young couple.

YESTERDAY TODAY ALWAYS is a winner of the silver badge in the Author Shout Recommended 2019 Reader Ready Award. Congratulations, Melanie. I recommend this novel of love, danger, and hope. Happy Reading.
