A Wish and a Prayer

A WISH AND A PRAYER
By Beth Bence Reinke
Illustrator, Ginger Nielson

Beth Bence Reinke’s picture book, A WISH AND A PRAYER, is the story of a boy and his parakeet. It’s also a story of wishes and prayers. One day Jason is pretending he’s Captain Jason, a pirate, and Sonny is a pirate parakeet. His mother is shaking a rug out the open window while Jason and Sonny whistle and chirp at each other as only a boy and his pet can communicate. When an ambulance roars down the street, Sonny, terrified by the siren, flies out the window. Jason tweets and whistles, but Sonny is gone. So the search begins.

Ms. Reinke has written a lovely story about who or what hears wishes and who hears prayers and how Jason comes to realize the difference between the two. Ginger Nielson’s illustrations bring the story to life with characters that you just want to reach out and hug and tell them all will be okay. This picture book could be used in Sunday school classes, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes, and up to second or third grade. I also recommend it for parents and grandparents to snuggle up with their little ones at bedtime and read together.

Nothing but Trouble after Midnight Review

NOTHING BUT TROUBLE AFTER MIDNIGHT
By Kimberly Blackadar

Love, Betrayal and Forgiveness

Every girl should have a friend like Rob. He’s smart, handsome, an athlete, and has a great sense of humor. He’s also Chloe’s boyfriend. He’s loved her since they were children. She loves him back. They’ve also been best friends and neighbors since childhood. On Chloe’s seventeenth birthday, Rob gives her a Claddagh ring, a family heirloom with a beautiful story of its own. I loved this added touch to their romance.

Kimberly Blackadar’s young adult novel, NOTHING BUT TROUBLE AFTER MIDNIGHT, brings Chloe Preston’s story alive with vivid descriptions, action scenes, and a young girl’s inner most thoughts and fears and hopes. Chloe’s world is a teenager’s dream, but there’s always someone to shatter those dreams. The challenge is to rebuild them or else they’ll die. Once gone, they seldom can be brought back. When the unthinkable happens one night, Chloe and Rob must reach inside themselves to find forgiveness and understanding and how important their relationship is to each other. Is their love strong enough to survive?

NOTHING BUT TROUBLE AFTER MIDNIGHT is a story about everyday teenagers in true-to-life situations. Chloe is confident one moment, doubting herself the next. She and her friends have their fun moments, their tender moments, and their sad moments. Ms. Blackadar’s characters face their challenges, sometimes with courage, sometimes with tears. Everyone who has teenagers in the family or knows teenagers and was once a teenager (covers most everyone, huh) should read this book. You’ll be glad you did. I hear there’s another one on the way. Adding it to my TBR list.

A Basket of Goodies

I'm having a contest to launch my young adult historical novel, Caves, Cannons, and Crinolines, due out June 15, 2010. I’m still working on the details, but the winner will receive a basket of goodies including:

A signed Pre-release copy of Caves, Cannons, and Crinolines

A gift certificate to Amazon.

Bookmarks and other stuff I’m thinking about.

So what do you have to do to enter? It’s very simple. Just leave a comment about how you’d feel if you had to live in a cave or wear a crinoline petticoat. Choose either one. Be sure and add your email so I can contact you if you’re the lucky winner. You can leave your comment here or at my blog: http://beverlystowemcclure.wordpress....

Thanks for making Lizzie’s launch a good one. Best of luck.

Contest ends June 15. Winner will be announced soon after.

What's Happening in My World

This week has started off super. One of my favorite things to do is enter contests for book giveaways. Now, I'm not usually a lucky person. I seldom win anything. Recently, however, I've been on a streak and have won some amazing books. I won't list all of them, but hope to write reviews later, when I find a couple more hours to add to each day. I will mention the latest, however. Three authors with books just out or coming out had a Valentine's Day Contest. You had to finish the poem "Roses are red..." and post on their blogs. So many people entered I thought I had little chance of winning. But it was fun, so I did. Around noon today, I decided to see who won. AND MY NAME WAS LISTED. Woo hoo! Surprise. I also win handmade Valentines by the authors. How cool is that. No covers to show you, but here are the titles I'll be reading shortly:

The Espressologist by Kristina Springer
Stupid Cupid by Rhonda Stapleton
A Match Made in High School by Kristin Walker

Thanks to the authors for their books. Just from the titles, I know I'll enjoy them.
Yay for contests.

The next thing on my agenda is new contracts. I've had a bit of luck (paired with lots of hard work and hair pulling out) and now have signed three contracts for future books.

September 2009: Frankie's Perfect Home, PB, Guardian Angel Publishing
October 2009: Scattered to the Winds, MG historical, Twilight Times Books
February 2010: Life on Hold, YA contemporary, 4 RV Publishing LLC

That should keep me busy for a while.

Happy Reading and Writing, Everyone
