Global eBook Awards

I'm happy to announce that my YA Historical Fiction, Caves, Cannons, and Crinolines, has been nominated for the Dan Poynter's Global eBook Awards.

While having votes and comments isn't supposed to make a difference in the judging, (they'll base the winners on the book), I would appreciate comments and your votes. If you have a spare minute, please stop by the Contest Site, http://bit.ly/irruPM , and say "Hi." You'll also see 5 little e letters at the top, on the left side. When you hold your pointer over the e on the right it says: "You gotta read this one." I've been leaving comments on all my friends pages, and I'm discovering some new stories that sound interesting.

Thanks, all. You're the best. If any of you are entered, please let me know, and I'll be there in a flash.

Have a great week. Happy reading and writing.

The Weaver Review

At one time or another, most of us have made a wish for something we truly wanted. Sometimes that wish came true, the way we hoped. Other times it turned out quite differently than we expected, surprising us.

In author Kai Strand’s debut novel, THE WEAVER, for middle grade and tween readers, Mary Wordsmith lives in The Tales, a village where the people weave stories. Mary wants to weave tales as beautiful as those of her mother, Abigail. Mary’s tales, however, are boring. When she starts to tell one, the other kids at school roll their eyes and yawn and groan. Then one day on her way home from the dairy Mary meets Unwanted, a little blue gnome-elf, who grants her a wish. What happens next makes for a fantasy story that will delight young readers and old. I know the tale fascinated me. I could envision Mary, trying so hard to tell her stories, but not having the special touch that the rest of the villagers seemed to have. Even her name, Wordsmith, hints at what she is, so why do her stories turn out all wrong?

Ms. Strand has woven a beautiful tale of her own that young readers will want to read over and over. The vivid descriptions of the town and the people allow readers to “see” the quaint village and to be there, with Mary and her family. THE WEAVER would make a perfect addition to grades 3 - 5 classrooms. After reading the book, the students could then weave their own tales and illustrate them as well. What a fun way to develop students’ creative writing skills. I wish I’d had this book when I was teaching 3rd and 5th grades. And the cover art by K. C. Snider is just perfect for the little village of The Tale.

The Giving Meadow

Stephanie Burkhart – Author
Stephen Macquignon – Illustrator

Stephanie Burkhart’s picture book The Giving Meadow starts with an egg. The egg hatches into a caterpillar, a very hungry caterpillar. So the hungry little caterpillar with a sweet smile and big eyes does what a hungry caterpillar does. He sets out to find food. From the frog to the ladybug, from the bee to the snake, every animal the caterpillar meets shares its water or food with the caterpillar. Each day, the caterpillar grows bigger and bigger. He’s also hungrier and hungrier. Will his tummy ever be full?

This is a lovely story of friendship, sharing, and thinking of others. It also shows young readers the stages of metamorphosis of the butterfly. With the caterpillar’s happy smile, the bee’s long lashes, the blue-eyed snake with the forked tongue, and all the other little critters that help the caterpillar find food, Stephen Macquignon’s colorful illustrations capture the spirit of the story, the giving and sharing of the animals that live in the meadow.

The Giving Meadow is a nice book to add to a child’s library. Early childhood and kindergarten teachers could use this book in their classes as a fun read to teach children about the small creatures in their world. I recommend this book for little ones ages 4-8, for animal lovers, even the crawly kind, and for everyone who enjoys nature and a gentle read at bedtime. Don’t be surprised, Mom and Dad, if you find yourself in the backyard with your children, searching for caterpillars so you can watch them grow and change into a lovely butterfly.

In My Bath

By Beth Bence Reinke
Illustrations by Ginger Nielson

Bath time. Some kids love it. Other kids prefer dirt under their fingernails and mud between their toes. The hero of Beth Bence Reinke’s story, IN MY BATH, discovers that taking a bath can be an adventure, if you have the right friends.

In his bath the unnamed boy jumps the waves, floats on the tide, and glides above the sea. He’s a dolphin, a manatee, a seal, and a whale. He claps soap between his flippers, sneezes through his spout to make a fountain of foam. From beaver to alligator to ducks to frogs his imagination has no limits. So come along and see how exciting a bath can be.

IN MY BATH has a satisfying ending. Oh, no. I’m not telling. However, children will never look at their bath time in quite the same way after reading this delightful book. In fact, don’t be surprised, Mom and Dad, if they beg to take an extra long bath tonight.

Ginger Nielson’s playful illustrations complement the fun text. The animals are colorful and lively and will appeal to young readers or children being read to. The team of Reinke and Nielson have put together a winning book. I recommend it for kids 3-8 and for older folks to read to their little ones. I think I’ll go take a bath now and see what might be waiting in my tub.
