Poetry Nook
I am happy to report that my poem "The Horse Lord," first published in Ideomancer, won last week's Poetry Nook contest.
I note that Poetry Nook is an excellent place to submit previously published poems. There is no entry fee and a $100 prize. However it isn't the place to submit work for which you are still hoping to sell first rights, because the entries are publicly posted online (therefore published).
I entered my short poem "Succession," first published in Red Rock Review, in this week's contest, and the entry may be read online at: http://poetrynook.com/content/succession

Orlando
Thinking of the dead, the injured, their friends and families in Orlando:
Incomprehensible
In ruin's wake,
we search for signs,
a meaning writ
where there is nothing
but grief.

King Xau poem online
My poem "Homecoming" is online at Songs of Eretz Poetry Review. It's a quiet poem told from the perspective of King Xau's elderly stablemaster, and may be read at http://eretzsongs.blogspot.com/2016/0...

F&SF
My poem "Kingship" has been accepted by F&SF. Once upon a time, back when I was writing short stories, I had several in F&SF. But this is the first time that I've sold them a poem, and I am happy. The king in the poem is, unsurprisingly, King Xau.

Polar Bears
My poem "Polar Bears" has been published online at Songs of Eretz Poetry Review. It's a poem about visiting the Pittsburgh Zoo with my daughter Lucy when she was two years old, and may be read at http://eretzsongs.blogspot.com/2016/0...
Before Lucy was born, I used to write short stories. Afterwards I found it a challenge to find time even to write a poem, and for several years my writing consisted of mainstream poems, such as "Polar Bears."
About three years ago, I happened to write a few fantasy poems, one of which was about a boy and a dragon. Something about the boy hooked me, and I wrote more and more about him. One week ago today, I finished the first draft of his story, "The Sign of the Dragon," which currently contains some 329 poems.

Trees down
Two huge trees fell down in our back yard overnight. A sadness.

Welcome
Hello and welcome to my new Goodreads blog.
After nearly three years, I have just completed the first draft of "The Sign of the Dragon," my epic fantasy in verse.
I plan to write less and read more over the summer, and have a very long list of books to help with the reading part of this regime. Yesterday evening I finished reading the book at the top of my list, Children of Earth and Sky, by Guy Gavriel Kay, who is one of my favorite authors. I loved the book, I love the way Guy Gavriel Kay writes.
For the curious, I have been keeping a blog about my mail for over twenty years at
