poem in Analog

My poem "Venus, As It Might Have Been" is in the March/April 2018 issue of Analog, a first for me, though I have previously had a short story published there.

The poem may currently be read on their website, though it will in due course yield its spot: Analog featured poem.

Daily Science Fiction

For the first time in embarrassingly many years, I've had a new short story published. A very short story, mind you, and not even really a story, more of a whimsy.... Dwarf Varieties appeared today in Daily Science Fiction.

N.B. I have another very short story forthcoming at Daily Science Fiction, plus two short-shorts forthcoming at Analog.

On Reading Le Guin

Ursula K. Le Guin was one of my very favorite authors, and I am so sorry that she died this Monday.

I have a poem about reading her work in the new issue of Uppagus: On Reading Le Guin.

She was a giant.

Rhysling nomination

My poem "Daunted," first published in Dreams & Nightmares, has been nominated for the Rhysling Award. It is officially a happy start to the New Year :-)

"Daunted" is one of the longer poems in The Sign of the Dragon, and features King Xau, Captain Li, and the dragon herself.

Asimov's Science Fiction

After approximately 40 rejected poems over the past 4 1/2 years, I just made my first poetry sale to Asimov's Science Fiction. Happiness!!!

New Year book problems

I had difficulty fitting the books I'd been given for Christmas onto my to-read shelves. A tally revealed that I have a backlog of 198 books waiting to be read, not counting magazines, and not counting the many books I want to read but which I don't own. Hmmm.

F&SF acceptance

I am entirely delighted that Fantasy & Science Fiction has just accepted my poem "Diaspora."

This will be my fourth poem to appear in F&SF, which is currently my favorite place to submit both poetry and fiction.

Happiness :-)

Poetry Nook

My poem Master of Chocolate won the recent Poetry Nook contest today :-) And I discovered that they have raised their prize money to $150, making this the joint-most that I've received for a single poem's publication. In contrast, and far more typically, the poem's first appearance in The Atlanta Review paid only in contributor copies.

As I mentioned last time I won this contest, I do highly recommend it for previously published poems, since they have no entry fee and are open to reprints. However, I wouldn't recommend sending unpublished poems there, because all entries appear online, so you couldn't afterwards try to sell first rights to anyone else.

Wall Street Journal

Technically, my poetry has now appeared in the Wall Street Journal! They ran a brief article about my Elemental Haiku in the 5 August 2017 issue (page B10), which included three of the haiku.

If you are a subscriber, the article may be read online in the Moneybeat section.

Elemental Haiku in Science

I have 119 Elemental Haiku in Science, one haiku for each element in the periodic table! I believe this is the first time I've had my poetry appear in a scientific publication :-)

The haiku are available online in a wonderful interactive periodic table, where different haiku appear as you mouse over the elements: http://vis.sciencemag.org/chemhaiku/

I'm also interviewed in this week's Science podcast, which is available at http://www.sciencemag.org/podcast/bio...
