Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015
Sadness and hate=past. Happiness and love=future. Embrace hope
On International Happiness Day, it is difficult not to be cynical. Yet my message will always be that if we can get through to the next century it will be to a healing world. The horrible testosterone storm will be a thing of the past. That is a safe prediction, because if we do not at last control the desires of men to build, to breed, to bomb we will not see a new century. We must reshape our cultural evolution along the lines of happiness and natural evolution.

No species has ever worked harder to befowl the earth’s water than Homo sapiens, insapiens.
I posted this to help celebrate Canada Water Week. What's to celebrate?

Science dreams of greening Mars and Titan. What’s the plan? Destroy Earth and move on?
This is a picture of Titan. Inviting, no? We are working hard to destroy Earth, with this unlovely place as a possible alternative if things do come to our having made our gorgeous planet unliveable.
Take your pick; there's no planet B.

Should we fight for the rights of our SUVs or for our right to speak the truth?
#C51
Bill C-51 is designed more than anything else to muzzle those who would question or protest the folly of keeping picture one flowing. It is still likely true that more of us would fight for our right to drive SUV's than stand up against a government bill to stifle dissent against the status quo.

Not all testosterone is about power and violence to nature

The above url will take you to a performance by the men and boys of Westminster Abbey. Everything about this performance, and about most of the pictures that accompany it, is directed toward the pursuit of purest beauty, unadulterated by evil.

A civil society relies upon the ability to responsibly impugn government with impunity.
Does this post belong in a blog about the collapsing biosphere and what to do about it?
Of course it does. The more governments arrogate arbitrary power to themselves - with whatever excuse - the more difficult it will become to work together to solve the real problems that face us. Bills such as C-51 in Canada are extremely old-fashioned. They look backward; they are intended to preserve the status quo, no matter what the consequence. Canada should be leading the world-wide efforts to improve the future of our grandchildren and their co-inhabitants of the biosphere. For much of the 21st century it has followed a corporate agenda aimed at a bottom-line economy of now that is turn based upon an impossible dream of growth.

The images that follow are stupid, impossible dreams: the first, because in order to realize it we would make demands on the biosphere that are many times beyond those that are already bringing us to the edge of disaster; the second, because in order to achieve it would require the background of a perfectly ordered earth, in which case no one is very likely to want to green Mars. We urgently need to revise our dreams.

Over time, everything comes closer to falling apart. Maybe we should stop interfering to hasten or postpone that reality.

Fact: the testosterone-enslaved, hegemonic rule of patriarchs will yield more of the same.
More gargantuan engineering in response to crisis. Why do so many of the objects in the picture look a little like erect penises?
More warfare.
More garbage
More deserts
More of us
More carbon and

Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015
Death is Nature's elegant answer to the dilemma posed by birth. We humans meddle: hopeless birth, senseless death.
These beautiful children had the same right to life as a beautiful Ambani child, yet they appear hopeless. Maybe we should attempt to guarantee every new human a fulfilled life. That is not possible so long as we give no thought to the numbers we make.
This is the bi-catch from shrimp fishing: utterly wasted death. There is no elegance here.
