Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

No species has ever worked harder to befowl the earth’s water than Homo sapiens, insapiens.
I posted this to help celebrate Canada Water Week. What's to celebrate?  Picture Picture Picture Picture

Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

Science dreams of greening Mars and Titan. What’s the plan? Destroy Earth and move on? Picture This is a picture of Titan. Inviting, no? We are working hard to destroy Earth, with this unlovely place as a possible alternative  if things do come to our having made our gorgeous planet unliveable. Picture Take your pick; there's no planet B.

Not all testosterone is about power and violence to nature  http://goo.gl/lOQgS5   Picture The above url will take you to a performance by the men and boys of Westminster Abbey. Everything about this performance, and about most of the pictures that accompany it, is directed toward the pursuit of purest beauty, unadulterated by evil.

Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

A civil society relies upon the ability to responsibly impugn government with impunity.

Picture Does this post belong in a blog about the collapsing biosphere and what to do about it?
Of course it does. The more governments arrogate arbitrary power to themselves -  with whatever excuse - the more difficult it will become to work together to solve the real problems that face us. Bills such as C-51 in Canada are extremely old-fashioned. They look backward; they are intended to preserve the status quo, no matter what the consequence. Canada should be leading the world-wide efforts to improve the future of our grandchildren and their co-inhabitants of the biosphere. For much of the 21st century it has followed a corporate agenda aimed at a bottom-line economy of now that is turn based upon an impossible dream of growth.

Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

The images that follow are stupid, impossible dreams: the first, because in order to realize it we would make  demands on the biosphere that are many times beyond those that  are already bringing us to the edge of disaster; the second, because in order to achieve it would require the background of a perfectly ordered earth, in which case no one is very likely to want to green Mars. We urgently need to revise our dreams. Picture Picture

Over time, everything comes closer to falling apart. Maybe we should stop interfering to hasten or postpone that reality. Picture Picture

Fact: the testosterone-enslaved, hegemonic rule of patriarchs will yield more of the same. Picture More gargantuan engineering in response to crisis. Why do so many of the objects in the picture look a little like erect penises? Picture More warfare. Picture More garbage Picture More deserts Picture More of us Picture More carbon and

Aforementioned: aphorisms and questions for 2015

Death is Nature's elegant answer to the dilemma posed by birth. We humans meddle: hopeless birth, senseless death. Picture These beautiful children had the same right to life as a beautiful Ambani child, yet they appear hopeless. Maybe we should attempt to guarantee every new human a fulfilled life. That is not possible so long as we give no thought to the numbers we make. Picture This is the bi-catch from shrimp fishing: utterly wasted death. There is no elegance here.
