We Contain Multitudes, the instrumental heavy psych-rock project from members of Bitch Magnet, release new single "Atkins"
WE CONTAIN MULTITUDES, AN INSTRUMENTAL HEAVY PSYCH-ROCK PROJECT FROM MEMBERS OF BITCH MAGNET,
SHARE NEW SINGLE “ATKINS” – LISTEN
DEBUT ALBUM MINAKO ARRIVES JUNE 25 – PREORDER HERE

Today, We Contain Multitudes, the new heavy psych-rock instrumental trio consisting of ex-Bitch Magnet members Jon Fine (guitar, keyboards) and Orestes Morfín (drums) with Simon Kobayashi (bass), share their newest single, “Atkins.” The track comes from their debut record, Minako, which is due out June 25, 2025, via Expert Work Records. The album was recorded by Abe Seiferth and produced by Seiferth and the band. Of the new song, Fine said, “”Atkins” changed in the studio more than any of our other songs. The more we listened to it and thought about it, the more it suggested to us. Also, I’m kind of obsessed with songs whose endings are so elaborate that they’re basically songs in and of themselves."
LISTEN TO “ATKINS”

Jon and Orestes first played in a band together so long ago that they’d really rather not discuss it. It was in 1987 when Orestes joined Bitch Magnet. A signal American post-hardcore band of its era, Bitch Magnet released three albums and toured the US and Europe before breaking up in late 1990. Its records were reissued in 2011 by Temporary Residence, and the band reunited for tours of the US, Asia, and Europe—including an appearance at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival—in 2011 and 2012. Jon and Orestes met Simon when his band smallgang opened for Bitch Magnet in London during that reunion tour. When Jon and Orestes decided to start We Contain Multitudes, they immediately thought of him for bass, largely because based on that one show, they understood at once that he is a substantially better guitarist than Jon.
Simon also plays in the British band Hurtling. Jon was in Vineland and Coptic Light, and was a touring guitarist for Don Caballero for a bit. Orestes was in Walt Mink, God Rifle, and Bored Spies. Also, Spin once named Orestes as the 50th-greatest drummer in alternative music, a ranking that—as anyone who has heard Orestes play understands—is far too low.
Jon is also the author of the punk rock memoir Your Band Sucks, which was published by Penguin in 2015 and won critical acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, Men’s Journal, The Boston Globe, and The Atlantic. The book concludes with Jon deciding to retire from music after Bitch Magnet’s reunion tours. (He changed his mind.)
Minako, pronounced mih-NAH-ko, is a Japanese name that means ‘beautiful child.’ The album is at least partly named for the city-pop vocalist Minako Yoshida. (Simon, whose father is Japanese, came up with it.) At times, Minako goes far deeper into psychedelic, repetitive, and minimalist/maximalist realms than anything these guys’ prior bands have done, nodding to bands like Pelican, King Crimson, late-era Black Flag, Explosions in the Sky, and The Fucking Champs. Minako will be available on vinyl as a limited pressing of 300 copies, with a very limited edition of 50 copies on orange vinyl. It’s a double album whose music is spread over three sides.
“When I’m playing music, I want to feel a real sense of abandon. As a writer, I spend all my time with words, so when I go to play music, I want to get away from them. You can get to different emotional nuances, more emotional extremes, without words…you can’t quite name it, but it’s really profound.”
–Jon Fine

Jeff Buckley Photo by Merri Cyr
NEW YORK, NY (June 4, 2025) - Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired U.S. rights to IT’S NEVER OVER: JEFF BUCKLEY, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg (DELIVER US FROM EVIL, PHOENIX RISING, WEST OF MEMPHIS), from Topic Studios & Fremantle. The film, which world-premiered at Sundance to rave reviews and is currently sitting strong at 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, covers the life of the rising young star with an otherworldly voice and boundary-pushing artistry, who left the 90s music world reeling when he died suddenly, at age 30, after the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Grace. Told through never-before-seen footage from Buckley’s archives and intimate accounts from his mother Mary Guibert, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, Jeff’s former bandmates, including Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, and luminaries like Ben Harper and Aimee Mann, IT’S NEVER OVER, JEFF BUCKLEY illuminates one of modern music’s most
influential and enigmatic figures. Magnolia will release the film in theaters (available in Dolby Atmos) on August 8. The film will premiere on HBO and stream on HBO Max this winter as part of the “Music Box” series, created by Bill Simmons.
Buckley launched his career at a tribute to his late father, folk musician Tim Buckley, but quickly became a rising star himself and signed to Columbia Records. His only studio album, Grace, was released to astounding reviews and challenged conventional ideas of genre and gender. His intimate and influential cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” further catapulted him to fame. Still, under pressure to produce his second album, he retreated to Memphis to escape the spotlight and the ever-growing glare of the public eye. In a tragic accident, Buckley drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis in 1997, leaving behind an unfinished second album and a legion of devastated family, friends and fans. Over the decades since his passing, Buckley’s legend has continued to grow, and a whole new generation of fans has begun to discover his music through all-new channels, including social media. Berg’s evocative and sensitive portrait of Buckley makes space for both existing fans and newcomers alike, lifting up and celebrating his timeless body of work.
“With only one studio album, Jeff Buckley became a legend,” said Magnolia Pictures co-CEOs Eamonn Bowles and Dori Begley. “Amy Berg has captured his brilliance and complexity in this incandescent film that no true fan can miss.”
“I’ve spent practically my entire career trying to make this film which takes a very intimate look at one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time,” said Berg. “I’m so excited Magnolia and HBO have come on board to share this film with the world and give old fans and new audiences a chance to experience Jeff from this unique vantage point. I couldn’t imagine a better team to roll this into the world!”
A Topic Studios and Fremantle Film, IT’S NEVER OVER: JEFF BUCKLEY is directed by Amy Berg, and produced by Ryan Heller (A REAL PAIN), Christine Connor (NUCLEAR FAMILY), Mandy Chang (THE MONA LISA CURSE), Matthew Roozen (A MOUTHFUL OF AIR), Jennie Bedusa (THE SPACE WITHIN) and Amy Berg. Executive producers are Mary Guibert, Alison Raykovich, Brian A. Kates, Michael Bloom, Jennifer Westin, Maria Zuckerman, Brad Pitt, Ian Stratford.
“Working with Amy on this labor of love has been a gift,” said Topic Studios’ Ryan Heller and Christine Connor who both serve as producers on the film. “And we are delighted that our friends at Magnolia and HBO are joining us to help ensure that Jeff's remarkable story reaches the widest possible audience.”
Mark Reynolds, Global Head of Documentaries & Factual, Fremantle, said: “We are delighted to have partnered with Amy Berg and Topic Studios on this deeply human and beautifully made film - with such intimate recollections of an artist who continues to inspire - honouring Jeff’s legacy with the care and reverence it deserves. We’re equally excited to be collaborating with Magnolia as our North American distributor to help share this powerful story with audiences.”
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia Pictures SVP of Acquisitions John Von Thaden, with Submarine’s Josh Braun, Dan Braun and Matt Burke on behalf of the filmmakers.

Austin, TX based band Porcelain today have shared their driving, dynamic new single "Harmony" via TODO Records. Their debut release for TODO, the track is one of two songs from their upcoming 7" “Harmony” b/w “Torch,” which is out/available for purchase on July 9th. The quartet will be going on tour with Pelican this summer, including dates at Brooklyn, NY's The Meadows (7/20) and Chicago, IL's Thalia Hall (7/26).
“Harmony is a song about loss and how we cope with it," the band explains. "You tend to lose people more the older you get, and how we process that grief gets more important each time. Giving the space to reflect on how we feel in those moments is healthy and often gets overlooked."
Composed of Steve Pike (vocals/guitar), Ryan Fitzgibbon (vocals/guitar), Jordan Emmert (bass), and Eli Deitz (drums), the members of Porcelain cut their teeth in the Austin, TX DIY scene. Since their formation in 2022, the band has been touring steadily, earning a reputation for their cathartic live show–they've played with the likes of Chat Pile, Agriculture, Portrayal of Guilt, The Blood Brothers, Trauma Ray, and many others. "Harmony" follows their 2024 self-titled album, which was released through Portrayal of Guilt Records and earned support from the Austin Chronicle, +rcmndedlisten, The Alternative, Post-Trash, and more.
"Harmony" by Porcelain is out today via TODO Records.

In POLICE STATE, Nadya Tolokonnikova (b. 1989 Norilsk, Russia) explores the omnipresent mechanisms of control, surveillance, and the alienation of living under systems of power that seek to dominate the body, mind, and spirit. The work transforms WAREHOUSE into a visceral representation of a panopticon—a space where the watcher and the watched exist in a perpetual dance of oppression, resistance, and exposure.
This durational performance takes the form of a confined cell —a symbolic nucleus of human resilience to state power. Inside, Tolokonnikova performs a spectrum of soundscapes, from eerie, haunted lullabies to bursts of harsh noise. The cell becomes both a prison and a sanctuary, a space where despair meets defiance, and silence gives way to the radical act of creation. While POLICE STATE confronts the brutality of control, it also insists on the possibility of catharsis and connection. The cell becomes a paradox: a site of confinement and liberation, despair and creativity. Through this interplay, Tolokonnikova invites the audience to grapple with the mechanisms of oppression while seeking the sparks of hope that resist it.
Nadya Tolokonnikova is a conceptual performance artist, activist, and the creator of Pussy Riot, a global feminist art movement. In 2012, she received a two-year prison term following the anti-Putin performance Punk Prayer, which The Guardian later named among the best artworks of the 21st century. In 2023, Tolokonnikova's installation, Putin’s Ashes, at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, Los Angeles, propelled her into a new criminal case and put her on Russia’s most wanted criminal list. Her debut museum exhibition RAGE, (2024) was presented at OK Linz, Austria, and the eponymous performance at Neue Nationalgalerie, Germany. Tolokonnikova's work is in the collections of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Brooklyn Museum, New York; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas; Museum of Art and Design, New York; and the American Folk Art Museum, New York, among others. What the press is saying about Nilüfer Yanya:
“A melodically rich meditation on identity, desire and the reverberations of heartache, My Method Actor is confident and hypnotic”
The New York Times
"Ms. Yanya remains a master of emotional shading with a knack for writing tunes that stay with you after a single play. The expressive power of her singing continues to set her apart"
The Wall Street Journal
"Nilüfer Yanya returns with the vibrant, spare and breathtaking ‘My Method Actor’. The London-based singer-songwriter is like no one else out there, offering songs that appear at first like pleasing soft sketches until they reveal their depth and power, like tissue paper made of palladium."
Associated Press
"On ‘My Method Actor,’ Nilüfer Yanya draws deeply from a search for meaning with vulnerability and humor. Yanya has created a collection of songs that both grasp at the opacity of what is to come and revel in the freedom of letting go. ‘My Method Actor’ is Yanya’s most self-assured and driven album to date"
The FADER
(June 3, 2025) - Nilüfer Yanya is back to announce a new EP Dancing Shoes due July 2nd via Ninja Tune. Alongside the announcement Nilüfer shares a new single “Where To Look.” The song opens with a stripped back guitar strumming and builds into a powerful crescendo. Speaking about the new single Nilüfer shares, “We started writing this song for the album, but it was tricky to get it off the ground at that time. Then when we came back from tour, it suddenly clicked. Melodically it’s one of my favourite things ever. Very glad I was able to give it the time and breathing space that it needed.”
Dancing Shoes was written alongside a collection of tracks that Nilüfer re-approached with her creative partner Wilma Archer when she returned from touring her latest record. The new single follows previous track “Cold Heart” that will be included on the EP and which led The FADER to proclaim, “Once again Yanya shows her versatility and ability to pull something airy and bright from the very depth of her feelings.”
Following the EP release Nilüfer will be heading on tour across North America with Alex G this Fall. The tour begins in Boston on September 11th with stops in Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and more. Throughout the tour Nilüfer will be performing select headline dates in Richmond, Amherst, Omaha and Sacramento. Following the North American run Nilüfer will then pick up to tour with Lorde for a string of shows across the UK in November. Nilüfer will also be performing at select European festivals over the summer including Glastonbury, Green Man, All Points East, Primavera a la Ciutat, Best Kept Secret, and Way Out West. Full tour routing can be found below.
The forthcoming EP follows Nilüfer Yanya’s latest album My Method Actor, which was released to overwhelming critical praise with a Best New Music stamp from Pitchfork and the New York Times describing as, “A melodically rich meditation on identity, desire and the reverberations of heartache.” Nilüfer’s previous albums PAINLESS and Miss Universe also both received high praise, ranking among the year's best by The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, Vulture and more. Nilüfer performed celebrated singles on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Stephen Colbert, Later with Jools Holland and NPR’s legendary Tiny Desk concert series. She’s supported Adele, the XX and Mitski on tour, headlined London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire and sold out shows across Europe, Australia, Japan and the USA. Yanya has also been remixed by Sampha, King Krule and Little Dragon and has collaborated with Bombay Bicycle Club and Liss. Nilüfer is a founding member of the community project Artists In Transit which takes creative workshops and other support to displaced communities and people in times of hardship.

Terence Fixmer Shares Marcel Dettmann Remix Of "Evolve" || Announces 'Magnetic North' EP ' Out 7/16 On Mute/NovaMute
TERENCE FIXMER
SHARES MARCEL DETTMANN REMIX OF “EVOLVE”
EXTENDED EDITION OF NEW ALBUM
THE PARADOX IN ME
OUT 7/16 ON MUTE / NOVAMUTE

Terence Fixmer has shared a brand new remix by German techno powerhouse Marcel Dettmann, a reworking of “Evolve,” one of the stand out tracks from Fixmer’s recent album, THE PARADOX IN ME, out now on Mute / NovaMute.
“Evolve (Marcel Dettmann Remix)” will feature on a new EP, Magnetic North, set for release on July 16th. The three-track EP also includes a remix of “‘Another End” by German techno producer / DJ, and founder of Recorded Things imprint, Oliver Rosemann and a new track, “Magnetic North,” which Fixmer explains, “serves as a bridge between THE PARADOX IN ME and the sound of my future album, which will lean towards the club, and be more techno, and hypnotic with raw sounds.”
Listen to the new remix HERE.
Talking about long-time friend and occasional collaborator Dettmann’s remix, Fixmer explains, “Marcel chose ‘Evolve’ to remix, he always likes tracks when I put my voice to it. I love the way it starts with a dubby direction, before developing into an electronic club sequence and bringing on the voice. Marcel is so creative, it’s an honour to share this remix.”
The new EP arrives on July 16 along with an extended edition of THE PARADOX IN ME, Fixmer’s second album for Mute / NovaMute. The new edition features three new tracks, “In Synthesis (Vocal Mix),” “Razor Sharp (Version Two),” and “Close to You (Live Version).”
On THE PARADOX IN ME he confronts this duality, stretching the limits of dance music by interlacing evocative, cinematic electronics with pounding, peak-time 4/4 pulses. "There's always a fight between directions," he says. "This album represents all the sounds I have within me."
Fixmer burst onto the scene in the late ‘90s, establishing the Planete Rouge label in 1998 and releasing a slew of influential 12"s under a pseudonym before Muscle Machine, his acclaimed debut album which pioneered a new genre that merges the sounds of EBM and Techno.
Not long later, he achieved a personal milestone, collaborating with Nitzer Ebb vocalist Douglas McCarthy for two albums as FixmerMcCarthy that bridged the gap between EBM and classic techno. Since then, he's barely stopped for breath, remixing personal heroes like Front 242, Nitzer Ebb and Depeche Mode, as well as respected peers such as Ellen Allien, DJ Hell, Dave Clarke and Sven Väth, simultaneously building up a canon of work on CLR, Electric Deluxe, Ostgut-Ton and of course, Mute and NovaMute.
Fixmer's passion for electronic music hums from every note and carefully engineered beat on the Magnetic North EP, and extended version of THE PARADOX IN ME, which plays almost like an autobiography, and assembles a world that's tactile and strikingly visual, capturing the soul of the synthesizer in all its forms.

(June 3, 2025) - Sibling songwriters and producers Frost Children announce their third full-length album SISTER due September 12th via True Panther / Dirty Hit. SISTER is saturated in the golden age of EDM music that Angel and Lulu Prost grew up listening to at home in St. Louis. SISTER delicately weaves strains of emo, electro, and pure pop sonics while exploring close-to-home themes of co-dependence, consistency, and change through their lyricism. That ethos is on display with their explosive first offering from the new album, “CONTROL,” which arrives today alongside a Ben Turok-directed video.
Speaking about the new single, Frost Children share, “‘CONTROL’ is our truest self. We don’t care about perceptions anymore and we’re really just ready to take over dance music and make people bounce and feel free. Frost Children takeover is imminent.”
SISTER is born from the memories Angel and Lulu have from their youth of huddling over YouTube videos of 2010s festival staples like Zedd, Skrillex, and Krewella; watching rapt as Virtual Riot commanded a headline show at their neighborhood outdoor amphitheater; digging through their eldest brother’s dubstep collection. The third full-length is an exhilarating return to those first sounds that moved them, echoing with the reverence and refinement of two formidable artists crafting exactly what they want to hear. But it’s also a striking portrait of Frost Children’s singular creative partnership: as bandmates, as roommates, as symbiotic savants well-versed in the art of what Angel calls “twin telepathy.” Boldly revitalizing and revolutionizing a too-often-devalued subgenre, Frost Children are delivering their most forthright and full-bodied identity statement yet. As Lulu puts it: "This is so confidently what we love, and what we breathe.”
The duo cut their teeth in the New York City nightlife scene, frequently performing well before they had a full-length project out. Those shows eventually led to the organization of their Frost Fest, which was a two-night extravaganza with performances from Danny Brown, Lip Critic, Nation, MGNA Crrrta, Feardorian, and Babymorocco. As their following grew, so did their creative community – collaborating with the likes of the aforementioned Porter Robinson, Danny Brown, Fever Ray, Thrilliam Angels, Eliminate, Dorian Electra, and Jane Remover over the last few years.
Frost Children bring that energy from the stage directly into the studio during their creative process. Their debut album SPEED RUN, released in 2023, is packed with propulsive power and cheeky lyricism. That same year, the duo released Hearth Room, showcasing their musical dexterity with stripped-down and acoustic tracks written in a wholesome manner alongside their parents. SISTER melds the sensitivity and songcraft of Hearth Room with the vigor of SPEED RUN and puts forward an arrestingly personal vision for modern dance music that transcends nostalgia and trend-chasing.
Frost Children have a jam-packed week ahead of them. Following their DJ set at New York City’s Night Club 101 Sunday night, the duo heads to Spain to perform at Primavera this week before coming back home to perform at Governor's Ball in New York City this weekend. Throughout the summer, Frost Children will bring their energetic show around the globe with performances at Best Kept Secret in the Netherlands, Toronto Pride Festival, Summerfest in Wisconsin, Piknic Electronik in Montreal, Pop Messe in Czechia, O days in Copenhagen, and OFF Festival in Poland. Full round-up below, and tickets can be found HERE.

SUDAN ARCHIVES RETURNS WITH NEW SINGLE "DEAD"
SUDAN ARCHIVES RISES
NEW SONG “DEAD” OUT NOW – AN EXPLORATION OF ORCHESTRAL BLACK DANCE MUSIC

Sudan Archives photo by Yanran Xiong

More than two years since her breakthrough second album Natural Brown Prom Queen, Sudan Archives rises again with "DEAD", a new song that marks a more dancefloor-forward direction for her.
Natural Brown Prom Queen documented Sudan's move from Cincinnati to Los Angeles and her coming of age as an artist and woman. After touring with Andre 3000, Caroline Polachek, and Tame Impala, and playing festivals from Coachella to Glastonbury in support of Natural Brown Prom Queen, Sudan began imagining a new, advanced version of herself. She took everything she'd learned on stage and on the road back to the lab; "DEAD" is the result.
On "DEAD", a voice asks “Did you miss me?” It's Sudan, but not as you know her – her voice morphed into different digitized textures that evoke a self split into different versions, a self altered with technology and experimented with or upon. The technological enhancements Sudan has visited upon herself empower her even as they break her, and on "DEAD", she wrestles with a decision – who she is, and who she wants to be.
Recorded in Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit, "DEAD" explores the possibilities of orchestral Black dance music, and is Sudan Archives’ most high-energy, club-forward release to date. As she reconciles the human and machine halves of herself, she reclaims the feeling of being fully alive.

“There's secrets I don't tell ever to myself/I just keep moving.” So begins “Back At The Start,” the first song released from 2x GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Patty Griffin’s new full-length opus, Crown Of Roses, her 11th studio album and first in over six years. Crown Of Roses will be out on Friday, July 25, via her own PGM Recordings label via Thirty Tigers. Pre-orders/pre-saves are available now.
With its purposeful position as song one on side one, “Back At The Start” sets the rich tone for the album, embodying a rhythmic and soulful shadowy shuffle written during the pandemic, junked, and then reclaimed. The murky yet pulsating track sees Griffin probing the idea of letting go of the stories we tell ourselves.
“I came back to the song because I like that first line,” Patty Griffin says. “Part of it is about getting on with it, but part is also about staying stuck and going through the motions. It's really a constant thing to try to be alive while you're alive.”

Crown Of Roses sees Patty Griffin once again forming a poetic tapestry woven from the threads of love, loss, grief, disillusionment, resilience, and hope, shifting fluidly between intimate confessions, philosophical musings, and symbolic storytelling – all grounded in intensely human feelings and emotion. Burrowing into the stories she had long been telling herself, the award-winning songwriter ruminates on a vast array of themes and deeply personal topics, spanning the trajectory of women in the 20th and 21st centuries and communion with nature to the sound of her voice after cancer treatment made its mark to the relationship with her late mother, whose wedding day photo graces the album’s cover, set into artwork by Mishka Westell that captures many of her greatest loves, including the Maine woods of her – and Patty’s – childhood.
Produced by longtime collaborator Craig Ross and featuring musical contributions from her trusted band members David Pulkingham (guitar) and Michael Longoria (drums), the album drifts from spare folk to gauzy Americana to sly gospel blues over the course of eight moody new songs that evoke the scrubby west of Griffin’s adopted Texas and the calming verdancy of her home state of Maine. From the atmospheric “Born In A Cage” and the spectral “Long Time” (which includes a backing vocal cameo from Robert Plant) to the sparse, emotional authenticity of “Way Up To The Sky,” Crown of Roses is among Patty Griffin’s most profound works to date, continuing her exceptional talent for translating thorny concepts and finely wrought character studies into songs that speak as much to her own experience as they do to the lives of those who have loved her music now for more than three decades.
“If I try to hit things on the nose, they don’t feel authentic to me,” Griffin says. “If I can emotionally dance around things, it feels like I can be more honest singing it.”
Griffin will celebrate Crown of Roses by joining forces with legendary 2x GRAMMY® Award-winner Rickie Lee Jones for a very special tour. Dates begin October 10 at Philadelphia, MS’s Ellis Theater and then continue through a November 1 finale at Dallas, TX’s historic Longhorn Ballroom. Tickets for all newly announced dates go on sale this Friday, June 6, at 10:00 am (local). For complete details and ticket information, please visit pattygriffin.com/tour.
“Rickie Lee has been a North Star for me,” says Griffin. “Knowing how undeniably sublime she is as a songwriter and performer has kept me more grounded. I mean, with songs like hers, I’ve reminded myself over and over, women have voices that need to be heard and that have great value.”
In addition, Griffin has slated a number of headline shows over the coming months. Highlights include a special record release show at New York City’s Sony Hall (July 29) and a home state headline performance at Houston, TX’s Heights Theater (October 8).

NEW EP FORGIVE ME,
ARRIVES JUNE 27, 2025
VIA SUNDAY DRIVE RECORDS

Los Angeles alt-rock band Starling are excited to share their latest single “No Frown,” the last preview of their new EP, Forgive Me, out June 27, 2025 via San Antonio’s Sunday Drive Records. Performed as a duet, “No Frown” documents the invincibility and sweetness that a small town love can bring. Acoustic guitar and string arrangements evoke fond memories, yearning for the past as Kasha and Gitai’s vocals reminisce on moments of desire. A striking, ever-relevant song, Starling’s entry into the slowness marks one of their most reflective and memorable releases yet.
“‘No Frown’ is the most acoustic song on the record. It is about growing up in a city and falling in love with someone from a small town, and falling in love with the small town itself,” Starling say. “It is a sweet song, it feels complete; All of Starling’s usual yearning satisfied. The lyrics were written by Kasha and performed both by her and lead guitarist Gitai. Erik orchestrated the strings.”

PRE-ORDER FORGIVE ME,

Heralding the announcement of Forgive Me, was “I Can Be Convinced,” a hard-hitting but sickly sweet departure from their sparse and airy dreamscapes. The single sees the four-piece examine an all-consuming love and the comfort one can find in confinement. Soaring guitars, blistering hi-hats and bandleader Kasha Souter Willett’s saultering vocals push the song towards sonic chaos. Directed by David Milan Kelly and produced by Skyler Sulby, the official music video for the single was filmed in Los Angeles, CA, and features the band amongst an array of ballerinas.

Starling has kept busy since their inception in 2023, steadily releasing music and playing shows on the West Coast. Their debut EP, 2324, arrived last fall via tastemaking tape label Pleasure Tapes. Serving as a compilation of their singles from 2023 and 2024, the project features fan favorite songs like “Bottlebrush Tree” and “Falling Down a Mystery Hillside.”
Having recently finished up a run of shows with fellow LA band Cryogeyser, Starling has rocked support slots across town with Flooding, Devon Ross and more. Starting next month, they’ll support Phoenix shoegaze band Glixen in California, the Midwest and Texas. ABOUT STARLING:
Starling is a four-piece Alternative band born and based in Los Angeles, CA, creating music with a soft heaviness, weaving from grunge to songwriter to shoegaze. The band’s absolute genre is hard to pin, but the feel is a general yearning for contentment, a person, a place. Combining bedroom warped production with angular leads and rich vocal melodies, Starling offers a uniquely vulnerable and enthralling style of rock.
Lead singer and guitarist Kasha Souter Willett started the project in 2023 without a vision of what it would become. In May 2024, Starling officially formed with three more integral members - Erik Sathrum Johnson, Grace Rolek and Gitai Vinshtok. Their first EP 2324 was released in September 2024.
Confusion, frustration, love and loss are all expressed throughout Starling’s new EP, Forgive Me,. Written over the course of about a year, the LA band recorded themselves in various sheds, apartments, and garages. The EP was mixed by drummer Erik Sathrum Johnson, artwork was shot by the band and their friends, and then mastered by Greg Obis (MJ Lenderman, Wishy, Duster).
Songs like “Quiet” start off with a slow and delicate melody, and then explode in sound halfway through. The guitars in the song were recorded in the middle of summer in a garage with no AC—a physically intense, almost spiritual experience that bleeds into the recording. The lead single, “I Can Be Convinced,” is a sad and yearning song, with a need to be still; yet ironically, it’s one of the most upbeat songs on the EP.
The EP closes with the nearly seven-minute “Keep It” a track Starling had been performing since early 2024. Lyrically charged with frustration, it builds tension through eerie, hushed verses that give way to a loud, distorted chorus—showcasing the band’s ability to channel emotion through dynamic contrast.
With Forgive Me, Starling has crafted a deeply personal and fully DIY EP, shaping every sonic detail themselves. The result is a project where every melody, rhythm, and raw feeling is intentionally placed and unmistakably theirs.
