SOKO Exclusive Interview And Performance On MTV IGGY

SOKO: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW AND PERFORMANCE ON MTV IGGY  NEW SONG “FIRST LOVE NEVER DIE” DOWNLOAD OF THE DAY TODAY ON MPR’s “THE CURRENT LISTEN/WATCH HER DEBUT LIVE PERFORMANCE ON KCRW’S “MORNING BECOMES ECLECTIC
Singer-songwriter-actress SOKO continues to captivate audiences worldwide. This past month, MTV IGGY recorded an exclusive performance on location at the The McKittrick Hotel in New York City. Watch the clip here: SOKO performs the new song “Destruction of the Disgusting Ugly Hate” from her just-released debut album I THOUGHT I WAS AN ALIEN out on Community Music, the Los Angeles-based indie label founded by Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

After the performance, SOKO sat down for an intimate interview with MTV to talk about her creative process and her impressive new single, song and short film “Monster Love/I Just Want To Make It New With You.” SOKO both directed and stars in the short film--filmed on VHS in her unique DIY style like her previous clips--alongside Morgan Krantz and actor, model and marine activist Hannah Fraser. The soundtrack for the short film includes both “I Just Want To Make It New With You,” off her debut I THOUGHT I WAS AN ALIEN and “Monster Love,” featuring Ariel Pink (of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti) a new song from her forthcoming album My Dreams Dictate My Reality . View SOKO’s interview with MTV IGGY here and see the short film for “Monster Love / I Just Want To Make It New With You” and exclusive Q&A with SOKO and Ariel Pink on Nowness: http://www.nowness.com/day/2013/6/26/3127/soko--monster-love .

VOGUE magazine writer Evelyn Crowley says, “Her music is deceptively sophisticated. Beneath the neu-folk veneer of her debut album, I Thought I Was an Alien, lies lush beds of texture rife with swelling strings, pulsating synthetic drum beats, and reverb-soaked keyboards. There’s also an undercurrent of melancholia running through the fourteen tracks.” (6/12/13). Elsewhere, MTV’s Alexis Stephens described her as “Singer-songwriter SoKo crafts impossibly fragile music. This is most apparent in her live performances. Her guitar-playing coats the rhythm of her songs like honey, carefully avoiding the pulse, giving her music the wooziness of Mazzy Star. She modulates her voice between a gingerly sing-song and a forlorn crackle. This isn’t to say that her frailty is a put-on, but rather that there is a logic to the way she channels art out of her vulnerable heart.” (7/17/13) In his album review for The Talkhouse Stew (of the Negro Problem) noted "This is an amazing record by an incredible artist. You should stop reading this now and just listen to it…‘Destruction of the Disgusting Ugly Hate’ is another classic. This is the it song. Listening to it is a seriously guilty pleasure and a wonderfully comical experience: it’s so utterly infectious with its drum-machiney shuffle and gorgeous, blooming chorus, and the kicker is, you are enjoying this whole experience in the same way you would ‘Hot Fun in the Summertime,’ only it's called ‘Destruction of the Disgusting Ugly Hate.’ I can’t think of anywhere where loss has been explored as complexly, masterfully and affectively than in this song, where we are forced into various directions at once by the rhythm, the melody, her voice, the text, etc. It forces me to smile even as I feel I shouldn't. Pop music rarely pulls tricks like this. Brilliant.”  (7/15/13 http://thetalkhouse.com/reviews/view/stew-soko ).

In radio news, today, Thursday July 18, SOKO’s new single “First Love Never Die” will be the download of the day on MPR’s “The Current.” Listen to the song here: http://www.thecurrent.org . Recently, SOKO made her debut live performance on the renowned “Morning Becomes Eclectic” show on tastemaker Los Angeles public radio station and NPR affiliate KCRW 89.9 FM. During the interview with KCRW host Jason Bentley, SOKO reflected on the inspirations behind her debut album I THOUGHT I WAS AN ALIEN and her music and acting careers. Watch and listen to SOKO’s interview and performance on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” here.

THE NEW BOMB TURKS '!!DESTROY-OH-BOY!!' 20TH ANNIVERSARY

THE NEW BOMB TURKS “!!DESTROY-OH-BOY!!”20th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION LP!

Super-deluxe GATEFOLD edition crammed with pix and liners by John Petkovic (Death Of Samantha, Cobra Verde)and a slew of musician fans, PLUS inner-sleeve with LYRICS to one of the GREATEST punk rock albums EVER, baby! PLUS 'TAPEWORM BLUES' A 6 SONG 1992 DEMOS 10"!
CRUDE, RUDE, and LOUD punkrock blort recorded 4 months prior to the epic “!!Destroy-Oh-Boy!!” sessions in a dank basement in Columbus. TWO never-heard originals - “TAPEWORM BLUES”, “DRUG CHICKS” plus 4 cuts later re-recorded for “D-O-B”. LINERS by Irving Azlik, Jr, much-renowned industry head. BOTH RELEASED JULY 23RD THROUGH CRYPT RECORDS!DISTRIBUTED THROUGH CARROT TOP! Then:Photo: Jay Brown Now:Photo: rainer@hellopz.com (taken 6/29/13)
Much i\n the same way that people of a certain age can tell you where they were during the Kennedy assassination, I can easily recall the first time I ever heard !!Destroy-Oh-Boy!! It was early 1993, and I was one of the infamous “shitworkers” at Maximumrocknrollin San Francisco. The way it worked for those of us who reviewed records each month, was that sometime before the constantly looming deadline, you’d make the trek to the MRR house in Noe Valley, find the records that editor Tim Yohannan has assigned to you, and listen to them right there, generally writing down the first thing that came to mind, as the records – which for some reason Tim insisted putting green duct tape on the three sides of the jacket that didn’t open – never left the premises. On this particular day, I was listening to whatever has been delegated “LaVellaish,” which generally meant anything on Sub Pop or Am/Rep, when Tim walked into the room and said, “Come with me.” He lead me up the stairs, and right out the front door to where he parked his powder blue Volvo wagon. “Get in, you gotta hear this.” Confused, I asked him why were going to listen to something out in the car, to which he simply said, “It’s the only place where we can play this LOUD enough!” and proceeded to pop in a cassette of !!Destroy-Oh-Boy!!Before I had even settled into the passenger seat, the opening guitar riff of “Born Toulouse-Lautrec” came pouring out of that poor Swedish imports speakers, and Tim had already lit a cigarette that he was dragging on as if his life depended on it. It wasn’t until well into “Tail Crush” that I managed to shout “Who is this?” in his general direction. He lit another cigarette, and with a look that was a cross between a proud parent and a juvenile delinquent that had just knocked off a liquor store, yelled “THE FUCKING NEW BOMB TURKS!” I had heard of them of course, I even had one of their singles, but it hadn’t prepared me for what I was hearing now, and certainly not at this volume. As the songs flew by, I carefully watched Tim’s body language. He was rocking back and forth in the drivers seat, holding yet another cigarette in one hand, while occasionally pointing to the tape deck at what he must have considered crucial moments. By the time “Dragstrip Riot” came on, I was doing the same thing, completely caught up in the moment. Occasionally, like at the beginning of “Runnin' On Go,” he would reach down and turn it up EVEN MORE, which under any other circumstances would have had me begging for mercy, but it somehow just made sense to keep turning it up. As we listened, the car continued to fill up with his cigarette smoke, but he didn’t dare crack a window for fear of a neighbor complaining about the noise. By the time “I’m Weak” came on, I really was weak, understandably lightheaded in that smoke-filled and deafening environment, but I wouldn’t have stepped out of that car for anything. It was just one of those defining moments in life that you know is significant even as it’s happening. By the time the Turks finally played in San Francisco, the hype on them and their debut LP had reached everyone who was anyone in the City by the Bay. It was a free, Sunday afternoon all ages show at The Bottom Of The Hill, and Gaunt were also on the bill. To say that the place was packed would be an understatement, in fact it’s safe to say that it’s still the biggest crowd I’ve since there before or since. As much as I loved Gaunt, I almost felt bad for Jerry and the boys because the assembled mob was clearly there to see if the New Bomb Turks could live up to the hype, and seconds into their set, we had our answer. Between Eric jumping up and twisting his body mid-flight while spitting out the now familiar lyrics, to Jim and Matt dug in like World War One-era trench fighters delivering a sonic barrage not unlike mortar fire, the place went absolutely insane. At one point,  I excitedly jumped into the air myself, and the joint was so packed that the crowd crushed in around me and I was suspended a couple of feet up in the air, my feet no longer able to make contact with the ground. As the room moved from side to side, I was whipped around with it, until I was finally able to find the floor again, but not before I made eye contact with Tim, who was standing near the side of the stage, laughing his ass off at my predicament and the entire situation in general. The rest is history I guess, Eric started writing for Gearhead, and many years later I had the privilege of putting out their last studio LP on my own label, and going out on the road with them on their last full US tour. But it all starts with !!Destroy-Oh-Boy!!, so thanks boys for making one of the all time great rock and roll records, and thank you Tim –wherever you are – for being so totally and completely dedicated to everything it stood for. - Mike LaVella
“Near as I can tell, there are only two ways to make “classic” records. Method one is to do something that has never been done before. Do something that nobody can say sounds like anyone else. The only other way I can think of to record a true classic is to take an already established music and stretch it farther than anyone else by putting yr own personal fingerprint on it and doing it totally fucking flawlessly. Impeccable zero-tolerance spotless pure perfection. It happens more often, but only because there are only so many things you can do with one kind of music. There’s a fine line between jealousy and ambition, nihilism and individuality, hedonism and pleasure seeking, pessimism and caution, vengefulness and justification, obsession and lust; the New Bomb Turks don’t walk that line – they run, jump, do cartwheels, and moonwalk on it while remaining thoroughly modest the whole time… How any band could just get this fucking gone and still be acutely aware of what they’re here for and what they want blows my mind, and this record is proof that they can do it at least 15 times in the two days they took to record this whole thing. If you’d given Jimmy Lee Swaggart some PCP, three nubile teenage girls and a swank-ass voice, sooner or later he’d have formed a band just like this. This thing is just so goddamned life-affirming that I’ve had it for six days and I still play it at least eight times a day. And I haven’t listened to anything else, either. If you don’t jump around to, sing along with and generally love this record, you’re wrong – you are wrong. Totally fucking classic.”  - Ryan Stotz, Rex Enduction Hour

Editors Reveal Video w/ Rolling Stone, LP Out Now

Honesty” Acoustic Video Premieres w/ Rolling Stone,
The Weight Of Your Love LP Out Now via [PIAS] America

Click Image Above To Watch "Honesty" Acoustic Video

Editors released their fourth studio album, The Weight Of Your Love , earlier this month via [PIAS] America. The follow-up album to Editors’ two consecutive #1 UK albums, The Weight Of Your Love is now available via iTunes ( Standard & Deluxe ) and other digital retailers. CD, double CD (with bonus tracks) & double 180g vinyl versions of the album are also now on sale.

The Weight Of Your Love album cut, “Honesty,”is a soaring, vulnerable number complete with Tom Smith’s signature baritone vocals- and a touch of falsetto. The atmospheric track continues to build in momentum as it proceeds, telling the familiar tale of a broken heart atop an anthemic chorus, dramatic drums and spectacular strings. Tom recorded an unplugged version of “Honesty” at the famous RAK Studios in London, lending the track an even more intimate, profound sound. Check out the stripped down “Honesty” video where it premiered with Rolling Stone or HERE . We encourage you to post & share.

The Weight Of Your Loveis the first Editors album to feature new members Justin Lockey and Elliott Williams following the departure of founding member Chris Urbanowicz in 2012. Inspired by Scott Litt’s work with REM amongst others, and built around a live performance approach to recording, the album was recorded in Nashville at Blackbird Studio by producer Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Norah Jones, Of Monsters And Men, Kings Of Leon) and mixed by Craig Silvey (Arctic Monkeys, The Horrors, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver). It also features extra production from Clint Mansell (Grammy award winning ‘Black Swan’ soundtrack) on “Nothing,” rescored from the original to become what Tom and Ed Lay both describe as the “centerpiece” of the album.

Lyrically focused on “love songs that don’t adhere to the traditional love song type” according to lead singer Tom Smith, The Weight Of Your Lovefeatures lots of firsts for the band, not the least of which is Tom’s falsetto on “What Is This Thing Called Love.” Horns make an appearance for the first time on an Editors record, and Elliott’s amazing new vocal contributions serve as a beautifully melodic counterpoint to Tom’s, as best displayed on “Formaldehyde.” “The Phone Book,” meanwhile, seemed to need nothing more than an acoustic guitar. “I have a deep love of those big rock records that are straightforward,” notes Tom, “and we really embraced that throughout this album.”

Take a peek behind the scenes during the making of this epic oeuvre by checking out The Weight Of Your Love documentary HERE , and stay tuned for more exciting news from Editors soon!

"Don't let the name fool you: Santa Barbara's FMLYBND hardly sound like any family band that you've heard before. Is it the synths? The genre-bending hooksTrance-inducing gang vocals? It's probably a little bit of all of those things. FMLYBND's music, their photos and videos (their brand, if you will) all feel like the last decade of youthful musical/cultural exploration, fully realized. They don't just play music together. They live togetherthey cook togetherthey get tattoos together. The music, as one member put it to me, "naturally flows out of our lives together. "Maybe it's that earnestness, more than the synths and the vocals, that defines FMLYBND's music. And maybe that's why it works.." -Earmilk--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windhand Announce New Album 'Soma' on Relapse Records

WINDHAND ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM SOMA OUT
SEPTEMBER 17 ON RELAPSE RECORDS

CONFIRMED FOR ROADBURN FESTIVAL 2014
PHOTO: Tony Lynch  LISTEN TO THE SOMA ALBUM TRAILER HERE
Richmond, Virginia’s psychedelic doom band, Windhand, are set to release their second full-length album Soma via Relapse Records on September 17 (Pre-order HERE).  After surging the DIY circuit with months of touring, their own IPA, a critically acclaimed self-titled release last year and a split with label-mates Cough this year, Windhand have confirmed they’ll be taking the main stage at next year’s Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands on Saturday, April 12. Somais nothing short of transcendent.  This record is for more than just doom-metal fanatics—this is an epic record for all fans of guitar driven rock and roll.

On Soma, Windhand successfully make syrupy slow, downtuned doom hooky and anthemic.  Propelled by singer Dorthia Cottrell’s beautifully haunting bellow, Windhand’s dual guitar attack sounds like the glorious misfit offspring of Black Sabbath and Nirvana.  An easy candidate for heavy music record of the year.  The album was recorded and mixed by the band’s own Garrett Morris at The Darkroom and mastered by James Plotkin in their hometown. Take a sneak peak of the album HERE.

Formed in 2009, Windhand (Asechiah Bogdan - Guitar, Parker Chandler - Bass, Dorthia Cottrell - Vocals, Garrett Morris - Guitar, and Ryan Wolfe - Drums) play what has been described as a tinnitus inducing mix of eerie psychedelia and haunting ambient doom. 2012 saw the release of their self-titled, debut LP via Forcefield Records and was critically acclaimed by Decibel, Pitchfork, CVLT Nation and many more.

Colette Drops MP3 w/ Pitchfork, New LP 8/27!

Colette

3rd Studio LP When The Music’s Loud Drops August 27

“When The Music’s Loud” MP3 Out w/ Pitchfork Today!

DJ, producer, vocalist – Colettehas grown from an integral part of the Chicago underground into a breakout musical triple-threat releasing her most accomplished and fully realized artistic statement to date. Combining the tunefulness of classic pop songs with the thump of classic house of her hometown, the album ventures into new sonic territory for Colette, from intimate bedroom beats to stadium-shaking dance anthems. When the Music’s Loud is the sound of an artist at the peak of her powers.

For the first time without a major label, Colette is self-releasing her album through PledgeMusic. The campaign launches this week. When the Music’s Loud will be released August 27 on Colette’s own imprint Candy Talk Records.

“I grew up listening to pop in the ‘80s, and as I got older, I was really deep into the ‘90s house scene,” says COLETTE when talking about the shockingly panoramic sounds found on her third studio full-length, When the Music’s Loud(Candy Talk Records). “For me, these two elements are always sort of married. This album is my way of bringing those sounds together as one.”

Inspired by 80's futurism, the shades of Italo-disco, house and electronica found on When The Music’s Loud reveal an artist open to infinite possibilities. Uplifting album opener “Best Of Days” commands you to move. Album title track “When The Music’s Loud” is a sleazy electro slow burner and Colette’s enduring Chicago connection is most apparent with the song “Hotwire”, which rides over the instrumental beat of acid house legend Adonis’ 1986 underground club classic, “No Way Back.”

Check out the "When The Music's Loud" MP3 where it premiered today with Pitchfork or HERE . We encourage you to post & share!

Influenced by Kraftwerk, Africa Bambaataa and Romanthony, When The Music's Louddisplays both lounge and uptempo tracks showcasing Colette's world-renowned vocal talent and musical range. Colette will kick off an international tour in support of the new record this summer. Be sure to catch her one-of-a-kind live show & stay tuned for more exciting news from Colette coming soon!

Trentemøller Reveals Details of Third Album Lost (Out 9/24)

Trentemøller Reveals Details of Third Album Lost (Out 9/24)

Guest Appearances by Low, Blonde Redhead, Lower Dens, The Raveonettes, Jonny Pierce of The Drums and More
Watch the Video for 'Never Stop Running (feat. Jonny Pierce of The Drums)' at Noisey   Stream 'Never Stop Running (feat. Jonny Pierce of The Drums)' at Spotify

Danish electronic artist Trentemøller has revealed the details for his forthcoming third album, Lost , out September 24th on In My Room. A more streamlined and intricate musical tapestry woven over sleepless nights in his Copenhagen studio, the followup to Into The Great Wide Yonder (2010), documents an artist really hitting his stride. Collaborating with a host of esteemed peers, personal influences and sprouting talent, Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead), Jana Hunter (Lower Dens), Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes), and Low, among others, are to be found on this new effort. A genuine study in the art of attention to detail, Lost is the kind of record one can only produce after endless months of studio isolation, long nights invested in instrument experimentation, and trashed analog consoles. Though the Trentemøller sound is left intact, as a whole, this album doesn't sound like anything he's ever produced before. "People might have wanted something similar to the last album, but if you get to the point where you're listening to what other people think your sound should be like...well, that's not for me," says Anders Trentemøller.
Trentemøller recently debuted Frederik Jacobi-directed video for 7" single 'Never Stop Running (feat. Jonny Pierce of The Drums)' with Noisey, after kicking off a set of European dates from London to Germany where he was handpicked to open for Depeche Mode. Trentemøller "transcends genres with cinematic scope" says NME who describe his "captivating complexity" of his music and sound design. It's been a long and exciting way from his debut LP, The Last Resort, alongside projects like The Trentem øller Chronicles and Remixed/Reworked , to his second record Into The Great Wide Yonder , which gained praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, SPIN, XLR8R , and more. The musical evolution of this Danish musical mastermind on his forthcoming third album was one characterized by twists and turns along with his development of a full live band that has toured the globe with great success.
After a groundbreaking performance at Coachella in 2011, which had Yahoo! calling him the "ultimate underdog, stunning all onlookers and becoming the toast of the fest...the biggest revelation of the entire weekend," Trentemøller embarked on a set of coast-to-coast US tours with his full live band, featuring guest appearances by expert theremin player Dorit Chrysler and Coco Sumner (I Blame Coco), concluding with the band's late night TV debut on Late Night with Carson Daly. Stay tuned for more details Trentemøller's return to the US to follow.

Björk collaborates with Apportable, Biophilia apps now available

BJÖRK COLLABORATES WITH APPORTABLE, BIOPHILIA APPS NOW AVAILABLE FOR ANDROID Photo credit: Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh MatadinIn order to bring her Biophilia educational apps to a wider audience of students, educators and fans, Björk has collaborated with San Francisco-based Apportable to make the apps available for Android tablets and phones. Also available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, the 10 Biophiliaapps each correlate to a song on Björk’s multimedia album of the same name and serve as the cornerstone of the Biophilia Educational Program, which incorporates the apps in a series of interactive workshops to bring science and music instruction to students around the world. The apps will now be available as one combined download for Android tablets and phones for $12.99.“The Biophilia Educational Program is a new way to teach children about science and music,” says Björk. “It has met with success in many cities, sparking interest from kids and educators from all over the world, from South America to East Asia to Africa. The most interest has come from students from low-income households and schools with underfunded art budgets, and the only way to bring the project to those people is to have Biophilia reprogrammed for Android and Windows 8.”Apportable’s technology quickly transfers programs from Apple to Android platforms without extensive changes to the code. The company was founded in 2011 through the Y Combinator startup accelerator program and has since powered apps that have risen to the top of the charts and reached millions of users through the Google Play Store, Amazon Appstore, and the Humble Android Bundle. “We are honored that Björk has chosen Apportable’s technology to power Biophilia’s much-anticipated arrival on Android,” says Apportable’s CEO Collin Jackson. “Just as it broke new ground for interactive music apps with its original iOS release, Biophilia is breaking the boundaries of cross-platform mobile development as the first-ever Objective-C music app on Android.”The apps are a central part of the Biophilia Educational Program, which began as a series of workshops Björk developed as part of her residency in Iceland. Björk collaborated with the University of Iceland and the City of Reykjavík to create interactive programming instructing students in the themes and natural phenomena that inspired her Biophiliaalbum. She then brought the Biophilia Educational Program to New York middle school students during her residency at the New York Hall of Science in 2012, and also teamed up with the New York Public Library and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan to develop educational programming that ran in the city throughout last year. “It’s taught me that any sound can make music, and how much science and music is related,” described one student. After traveling to Paris, Oslo, Buenos Aires, New York, Reykjavik, and Manchester, the workshops were held in Los Angeles and San Francisco this past month as part of Björk’s North American Biophiliatour. Reykjavik City’s Board of Education is currently running a mobile version of the Biophilia Educational Program in all of the city’s middle schools for the next three years.

Going Underground: Paul McCartney, the Beatles, and the UK Counterculture

GOING UNDERGROUNDPaul McCartney, the Beatles, and the UK Counter-Culture Coming to DVD on October 1st   In the mid-1960s the often rigid and colourless British way of life was irrevocably transformed by the emergence of a cultural underground movement. Led by a loose collective of young radicals, they introduced new social, sexual and aesthetic perspectives. Operating out of the heart of London, their various activities, from 'The International Times' - a bi-weekly journal that no hipster could be seen without -  to the psychedelic nightclub UFO, promoted alternative lifestyles and values, and sparked a social revolution.
This film not only traces the history of this underground scene, but also explores its impact on the pre-eminent British group of the era, The Beatles. Although they were well established by the time the movement emerged, Paul McCartney in particular, was closely linked with several of its key players, and through his exposure to cutting edge concepts brought ideas directly from the avant-garde into the mainstream.
Featuring many new interviews with key players from the time including; IT editor and long term friend of Paul McCartney, Barry Miles; founder of IT and UFO club organiser, John 'Hoppy' Hopkins; founder of UFO and Pink Floyd producer , Joe Boyd; Soft Machine drummer, Robert Wyatt; drummer from experimental improvisational collective AMM, Eddie Prevost; proprietor of Indica, the counter-cultural gallery, John Dunbar; Underground scenester, vocalist with The Deviants and IT journalist, Mick Farren; plus author of 'Days in the Life: Voices from the English Underground 1961 - 1971', Jonathon Greene; Beatles expert, Chris Ingham and Mojo jounalist Mark Paytress.
Also includesrare archive footage, photographs from private collections and music from The Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Soft Machine, AMM and others.   Pre-orderhttp://www.seeofsound.com/p.php?s=PGDVD161
