Watch Joan As Police Woman in the video for Holy City

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN'S "HOLY CITY" THE CLASSIC  is out March 11th via PIAS Recordings  WATCH: "Holy City" is Joan As Police Woman's prime Motown/Hi label-influenced pop fusion moment from The Classic, a brilliantly instinctive track inspired by a visit to Jerusalem's Wailing Wall. A video for the track was filmed last month in New York City. Directed by Alex de Campi, the video comprises a series of surreal TV tableaux with Joan fantastically attired in each Technicolor vignette.
The track's atmospheric closing scat-rap is from : "he's an incredibly inspired musician as well as being a comedic genius," ventures Joan, "he challenges you to think much deeper but in a way that's subtle, plus he's so comfortable, natural and sensual in his body... I contacted him through mutual friends, and a week later, he was recording on my record with the freedom to do what he wanted. It felt very magical."
The Classic, the fourth album of originals by the uniquely charismatic artist known as Joan As Police Woman, builds on the creative impetus and success of its 2011 predecessor The Deep Field. As ever Joan strives to create music rooted in an intimate, elemental and uplifting brand of soul combined with her own unique serene, torch-singing temperament, but whereas melancholy was a principle feature of Joan's earlier work, this time there's a more liberated feel than ever before.
Famously a key member of Antony Hegarty's Johnsons and Rufus Wainwright's band until she began making her own records, Joan was inspired by their combined piano balladry while infusing it with her own stripped-down-soul and torch-song approach. Her 2006 album debut Real Life was followed by To Survive (2008), written in the aftermath of her mother's death; in 2009, she released an interim covers album simply called Cover, before The Deep Field confirmed Joan had started a full recovery and was determined to beat the blues. Which takes us to The Classic, where Joan reaches even further toward the light.

Deleted Scenes Debut Video feat. Dustin Diamond

Dustin Diamond (Screech) Experiences the Worst Day of His Life
in New Deleted Scenes Video 'Stutter'
New Album Lithium Burn Out April 15th on Park the Van/Nevado
"The best part of Deleted Scenes is the unexpected, the unpredictable, and 'Stutter' is a perfect example of their hard-to-label style." -  NPR All Songs Considered  Watch the video for 'Stutter' at NPR First Watch or YouTube
Stream 'Stutter' at Pitchfork or Soundcloud

DC quartet Deleted Scenes has debuted a dark new video for their single 'Stutter,' featuring Dustin Diamond (Screech from Saved By The Bell) having one of the worst days of his life. According to director Alec Sutherland, "the band wanted to make a video about an actor coming unhinged. They threw in a handful of names of the type of actor they were thinking. A couple of months and a hundred or so phone calls to Dustin's manager later, we found ourselves in an LA diner sitting across from him, cutting up chicken fried steaks and listening to the horrors of participating in Celebrity Big Brother. The next day we shot this video."

The track, which Pitchfork called a "neuron scrambler" and a "full-body freakout" is taken from the band's forthcoming album, Lithium Burn, coming out April 15th on Park the Van (US)/Nevado(Canada). After releasing the 7-inch for 'Stutter' this past fall, the band did a short run of dates on the East coast, including a performance with The Dismemberment Plan, which prompted Travis Morrison in the band to tweet, "'Stutter' literally propelled me out of the dressing room to watch, I couldn't believe what was going on."

In 2012, the band released their critically acclaimed album, Young People's Church of the Air, whichcontained a mix of studio sounds and home-recorded lo-fi noise, and was recorded with Nick Krill (The Spinto Band). The album was praised by NPR, SPIN, Pitchfork, Paste, and The Washington Post, among others, who said, "if Deleted Scenes isn't the best rock band in Washington, it's certainly on the very short list." The songs took on a live identity over the course of 300 shows on tour, including performances with Cursive, Wild Nothing, Abe Vigoda, The Antlers and more.

William S. Burroughs (1914-1997)

William Seward Burroughs II (also known by his
Author of Naked Lunch and Junkie. There were 18 novels both experimental and conventional. When I got into the Beats in the early 1980s, many books besides Howl and On The Road, were hard to find. I remember when you had to go to some of the old grubby type bookstores on Hollywood Boulevard to find books by Celine or Burroughs. Back then there were just a bunch of bookstores at the mall. I found a few good used bookstores later. And of course there was Acres of Books in Long Beach. I used to go to San Francisco, and buy a lot of books at City Lights, Cody's and Moe's, because they were so much better. So by 1984, I had a copy of Naked Lunch, and Three Novels (Soft Machine, Ticket That Exploded, and Nova Express).

One time I was at the Tick Tocker thrift store in Costa Mesa and found an original copy of Naked Lunch, from Olympia Press, with a Brion Gysin drawing on the jacket. It was in great condition. I debated whether I should buy a second copy of this. The Burroughs movie came out in 1984. I saw it at the Fairfax Theater. Burroughs showed up to the screening with the director. I don't remember saying anything to him.

The Beats were obscure in the 1970s and early 1980s. I remember seeing a Jack Kerouac documentary in 1986. They had renamed the streets in San Francisco after famous Beat Writers around that time. There was a beat revival and poetry readings at the Spaghetti Factory and Cafe Babar. A lot of Beat books got reprinted around that time, and a lot of Burroughs stuff was out by 1990. Ten years early there was hardly anything available.

I saw the film Naked Lunch in 1994 when it came out. I did an interview with Allen Ginsberg in 1995. I was a writer and editor for CUPS magazine based out of San Francisco. We had produced a spoken word CD in the beginning of 1996. There were many writers involved in the project, including Ken Nordine and Don Bajema. There was a Burroughs track included on the CD, but I found out that it wasn't cleared. I received a one page cease and desist letter from James Grauerholz, Burroughs' secretary. There wasn't much that anyone could do. The CDs were already printed. We weren't selling them, but giving them away for free.

This is around the time I moved to New York City. I took James Grauerholz's info and tried to set up an interview with Burroughs, when I was driving through Lawrence, Kansas, back in March 1996. I tried to distance myself from Bryan Bence and the Cups Spoken Word CD. I sent a few messages back and forth. I got him on the phone once and he wondered how I had his number. When we finally got to Lawrence, Kansas, I tried to call again but I got an answering machine. We drove around Lawrence for a few hours, but gave up.

A year later when I was in New York City, both Ginsberg and Burroughs, both died in the summer of 1997. I figured it was a good time to publish my Ginsberg interview, which at the time, I thought didn't go so well.

I guess the only other Burroughs related stuff was that I was involved in a few books about Barney Rosset and the history of Grove Press. The Review of Contemporary Fiction published a Grove Press issue back in 1990. The Grove Press reader came out later. I worked for Barney Rosset for a short time in 1998. I also took a writing class with Kathy Acker in Fall 1991 at SF Art Institute. I was friends with her as well as Dennis Cooper.

Peter Matthew Bauer (The Walkmen) Announces Two Shows

Peter Matthew Bauer Announces Two ShowsRough Trade NYC 03.06 + PHI 03.08

Peter Bauer is a long-time friend. He told me in June that he was recording some tracks.
Here is the results:

Dates
03.06 - Rough Trade - Brooklyn, NY
03.08 - MilkBoy - Philadelphia, PA

About Peter Matthew Bauer
Peter Bauer is a writer and musician, having been a founding member of seminal New York city art-rock bands The Walkmen and The Recoys at the turn of the century. He now writes and records under his own name and lives in the Mt Airy section of Philadelphia where he consults with clients on Indian astrology and other mystic ephemera. As a child, Peter was raised in Swami Baba Muktananda’s Ashrams in Ganeshpuri, India and upstate New York, interacting with many other Gurus, teachers and healers through the meditation center in his boyhood home and while traveling. Peter studied comparative religion and writing at Boston University and at The New School for Social Research, Vedic astrology with Chakrapani Ullal in Los Angeles, and Gestalt psychotherapy and meditation with his own father Dr. Rudolph Bauer PhD at the Washington Center for Consciousness Studies. He has spent the last 13 years on the road and can’t seem to shake it from his blood.

Look Out For Liberation! from Peter Matthew Bauer This Summer
In the summer of 2014, Peter Matthew Bauer is releasing his first album Liberation! The record is a collection of mostly autobiographical songs on the topic of belief and its various incarnations and phenomena. It touches on such subjects as growing up in a Hindu Yoga cult, Scientology, the city of Philadelphia, the God Shiva, the city of Varanasi, Richard Dawkins and Jorge Luis Borges, and was heavily influenced by the work of Roberto Bolano & Elvis Presley. While a solo artist, the album makes the noise of a full on rock & roll band and his traveling act is a 7 piece barn burner often made up of dirtbag greasers from Fishtown Philadelphia and a group of singing hillbillies from Texas. He will play a 1956 Ivory Gretsch Corvette and the band will sound like a million dollars but don’t worry, they’re still getting paid in circus peanuts.

Tashaki Miyaki Share Track on Pitchfork and Announce 7"

TASHAKI MIYAKI ANNOUNCE LIMITED EDITION 7" DEBUT "COOL RUNNINGS" ON PITCHFORKLimited Edition 7" Vinyl Available February 25, 2014  Download and Share "Cool Runnings" Here Via Pitchfork    Pre-Order the 7" Here
"It's all so pretty I'm afraid saying anything else might diminish it."  The FADER   (Credit: Julia Brokaw)
Los Angeles based dreamy trio Tashaki Miyaki are pleased to announce their latest release. The limited edition colored vinyl will be available on their own vinyl imprint, Blonde Dog Records, as the soundtrack to a collaboration with director Juan Iglesias on February 25, 2014. To celebrate the release, Tashaki Miyaki are making the A-side, "Cool Runnings," available for free download viaPitchfork.
Download and Share "Cool Runnings" Here.
Singer and drummer Lucy Miyaki explains about the track: "Cool Runnings is a song about trying to stop the cycle of self sabotage. I wanted to present that idea lyrically in way that wasn't too self-serious, as the concept itself is so severe. Levity seemed important lyrically and musically. The original demo was titled "Cool Runnings" by my bandmate Rocky, and I thought it was perfect because that's what I do when I self sabotage. In some form or another I act like it's cool and run away. Musically the track was inspired by a few different things. I was inspired by the strings on Big Star's Third Sister Lovers, John Cale's Vintage Violence, and also the string arrangements on the Velvets and Trex records. My friend Nathaniel Walcott (Bright Eyes) wrote the arrangement and I loved it immediately. Unexpectedly, I think it came out sounding more like The Left Banke, who I dig, so I'm cool with that."
Los Angeles based Tashaki Miyaki was born out of a late night jam between Lucy and Rocky in early 2011. Shortly after they started making recordings as a duo with friend and producer/engineer Joel Jerome (Dios, Babies in Acid). After posting a couple songs on bandcamp there was sudden response from bloggers and business types alike, including being flown to London to play a private event for Converse at the legendary 100 Club.  Realizing they needed to fill out their live sound, they asked friend and bassist Dora Hiller to join.  Since then they have recorded a self titled EP, a single (Best Friend, Luvluvluv Records), a 7" of Everly Brothers Covers (Rough Trade's For Us Records), a tape of all their early recordings on Burger Records, as well as toured North America and the UK. They are currently in the midst of recording their debut full length.
Track List:A. Cool RunningsB. There was a Light (Chris Bell cover)
