RIP Maggie Estep, 1963 - 2014
I met Maggie Estep during the SF Poetry Slam in 1994. She was part of the New York team that included Reggie Cabico, Hal Sirowitz, and Tracey Morris. I soon met Bob Holman and a group of NYC poets, including people who were involved with Nuyorican Poets Cafe, The Unbearables, and the magazine, Sensitive Skin.
When I moved to NYC, I used to see Maggie Estep quite often at readings and parties. I saw her play in a band at Mercury Lounge. She wrote a number of books.

OUT 3/25 VIA PARADISE OF BACHELORS
LISTEN " CRYIN' THESE COCKSUCKING TEARS "
RECORD RELEASE SHOW 3/16 IN LOS ANGELES
STREAM "CRYIN' THESE COCKSUCKING TEARS” VIA PITCHFORK HERE
Widely recognized as the first openly gay country album - and cited as such even by Nashville institutions like the Country Music Hall of Fame & CMT - Lavender Country's landmark self-titled 1973 LP stands as nothing less than an artifact of courage, a sonic political protest document of enormous power, clarity, and grace.
At once a scathing indictment of the injustices perpetrated on the homosexual community, a proud proclamation of gay identity, and a love letter of bracing intimacy and eroticism, the album radically appropriates the signifiers of the conservative country genre, queering its heteronormative vocabulary into a deeply personal language. Songwriter, singer, and guitarist Patrick Haggerty, a fearless first-generation gay liberation activist and artist, seasons his songs with Yippie deviousness; in the manner of the Cockettes, the laughs both sharpen and sweeten the impact. To our ears the inimitable aesthetics and glimpses of cockeyed humor recall some ethereal psych-folk nexus of the Flatlanders & Ween as much as any standard country and western forbears, rendering the biting poetry in an even more other-worldly and timeless light.
The record reflects Haggerty's experiences: his upbringing on a tenant dairy farm in rural Washington, on the Canadian border; his dismissal from the Peace Corps on the spurious grounds of his sexuality; and his righteous struggles as an outraged young gay man navigating the Pacific Northwest in the immediate aftermath of Stonewall. He designed Lavender Country as a vehicle for what he deems "The Information": valid cultural communications intended to resonate with those unable to access similar resources.
LIVE LAVENDER COUNTRY: You are all cordially invited to come see Lavender Country in Los Angeles, at, The Church on York, March 16th.
This will be the first public performance of these songs in almost 15 years. Gun Outfit and White Fence open. Tickets here.
This show will close out Paradise of Bachelors Ides of March Weekender, Steve Gunn & Chris Forsyth both with full bands, will also be playing the Church on March 14th, and M.C. The Notwist Schedule North American Tour

Announce North American Tour In Support Of Close To The Glass
Listen/Watch: “Kong”:
YouTube (Official Video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUpktwg7O4M
Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/subpop/the-notwist-kong/s-WeALz Plus - Sasquatch July 4th Weekend;
‘Close To the Glass’ Available in North America Feb. 25th Via Sub Pop
We are thrilled to announce that The Notwist have scheduled a North American headlining tour in support of Close To The Glass, their forthcoming album. The trek begins June 9th in New York, NY at Webster Hall and currently ends on July 4th weekend at Sasquatch Music Festival. The bands previously announced European tour schedule begins February 24th in Wiesbaden, DE at Schlachthof, with a series of tour dates that currently end July 19th in Gräfenhainichen, DE at the Melt! Festival. Please find a full list of tour dates below.
We’d also like to share the official video for “Kong,” the lead single from Close To The Glass, an animated visual directed by Yu Sato and featuring illustrations from Tim Divall. The video for “Kong” is based on a true story that involved Marcus Acher and his family being trapped in their home during an Ammer River flood in Weilheim, Germany. During the experience, the young Acher resorted to fantasy, secretly hoping a superhero would save his family as the waters rose around them (see PitchforkNews Story February 12th).
The Notwist’s Close To The Glass will be available February 25th on CD/ LP / DL via Sub Pop.
The album will also be available in the following territories: in Japan from Afterhours on February 12th; in Australia via Spunk on February 21st; and in Europe via City Slang on February 24th. Close To The Glass features “Kong” and the title track, along with highlights “Run Run Run,” and “Casino.”
Fans who pre-order Close To The Glass via iTunes will receive the album’s title track and “Kong” immediately. Both singles can be purchased individually as well. People who pre-order Close To The Glass on LP at subpop.com will receive the limited “Loser Edition” of the album on colored vinyl, as well as a set of small, limited-edition art prints (while supplies last). Additionally, there are two brand new The Notwist t-shirts, that will be available as a premium bundle with CD or LP purchases.
What People Are Saying About The Notwist:
“Propulsive, driving...a surprisingly sparkling uptempo cut” [“Kong”] - Pitchfork “A very pretty, very hooky piece of Krautrock tunecraft, shot through with a deep sense of longing.” [“Kong”] - Stereogum “Here, they've abandoned any evidence of their glitchy history, mostly eschewing electronics in favour of warm, organic instrumentation like acoustic guitars and real-life drums. With a gentle melody and frontman Markus Acher's inimitable vocals, however, it's still the Notwist we know and love.” [Kong”] - Exclaim “Judging by "Close to the Glass," the lead single off the band's new album, they have toughened up their sound considerably since 2008's The Devil, You + Me, diving into the rubbery abstraction that's afforded by modular synthesis and adopting the percussive, post-rave sensibilities of Mouse on Mars and Simian Mobile Disco.” [50 Albums You Gotta Hear in 2014] - SPIN

Valentine’s Day is this week and it also happens to be Maya Vik’s birthday. To celebrate, she has a present for you from her upcoming yet untitled album. Produced by Pat Lukens, “Totally Right” is a feel good love song that digs deep into the candy jar of late 80s Jam & Lewis era R&B and emerges with enough sunshine to power a small city. So bust out of your winter funk, check your temperature for spring fever, and enjoy this new song because Maya Vik is here and everything is going to be totally right.
‘Music to make babies to’ is just one way to describe the sound of Norwegian bass player and solo artist Maya Vik. Although the press have drawn comparisons to Prince, Janet, Sheila E, and Vanity 6, Maya lays down a fresh brand of sexy electronic funk pop with her steamy vocals and thumping bass lines. Years of hard work has paid off for Maya which includes winning a Norwegian “Grammy” with her previous band Montée, playing in Savoy with a-Ha’s Paul Waaktaar, opening for Lenny Kravitz, and touring the US, Japan, Russia, Holland, and Germany with her own trio. After independently releasing more than two albums worth of critically acclaimed material in two short years, Maya Vik currently is sitting on a trove of new jams set for release throughout 2014.

The Wytches: new single on Pitchfork + sign to Partisan Records
THE WYTCHES PREMIERE "WIRE FRAME MATTRESS" ON PITCHFORK
SIGN TO PARTISAN RECORDS FOR A SPRING 2014 DEBUT LISTEN: "Wire Frame Mattress" via Pitchfork or Soundcloud
"A primordial blues-ooze that suggests Jack White if his music were actually as goth as his haircuts" -Pitchfork
"Intimations of impending malevolence seeping from every pore of the stinging guitar riff, pounding bass and crashing drums" -The Guardian
"A dark, anxious slab of Pixies fuzz and menacing vocals" -NME
Dark and driven, The Wytches consist of vocalist/guitarist Kristian Bell, bassist Dan Rumsey, and drummer Gianni Honey. Their unique sound full of echo and heavy riffs is a narcotic haze with influences ranging from Leonard Cohen to Black Sabbath.
Formed in November 2011 after moving down from Peterborough, this Brighton, UK based three piece is comprised of guitar / organ / lead vocalist Kristian; semi-professional poker playing / severe ADHD suffering drummer Gianni, and fiercely eloquent bassist Dan, who is currently writing a science fiction novel by the name of The Curious Adventures of Charlie Revel. The group gained a strong following in the UK from their debut single and self produced video "Digsaw," and have earned a certain notoriety ever since, thanks to their spellbinding live show that is known for its visceral intensity.
The Wytches have toured incessantly since their forming, which saw them supporting a rich variety of acts including Death Grips, The Black Angels, Band Of Skulls, Chelsea Wolfe, Bosnian Rainbows, Japandroids, Temples, Metz, Future Of The Left, The Cribs, Yuck and Drenge. They released their second single, the AA-side "Beehive Queen"/"Crying Clown," via Hate Hate Hate Records on June 3rd 2013, which sold out almost immediately. Following the success of Beehive Queen, the band re-released "Digsaw" as a limited white label 7". On November 18th, the band released a second AA side single, "Robe For Juda" / "Wide At Midnight" via HateHateHate records.
Look for a debut album out this spring, performances at SXSW, and tours supporting Blood Red Shoes in Europe and Pulled Apart By Horses in the UK, as well as forthcoming dates in North America.

Filter Premieres BEGINNERS' "Who Knows" MP3
Filter Premieres BEGINNERS' "Who Knows" MP3Debut EP Out March 25
Download: "Who Knows" via Filter or SoundCloud
The debut BEGINNERS EP will be released on March 25. Filter has premiered "Who Knows" from the EP and said, "The single offers us a catchy, pop melody with universally relatable lyrics. Samantha Barbera's alluring voice shines alongside the electronic beats and the wind-like echoes will have you singing, humming and whistling with them."The track is also available to download on SoundCloud.
BEGINNERS was born in Los Angeles' Wiltern Theater, where after years apart, Samantha Barbera and Nick Ruth reunited to support their former Malbec drummer in Foster the People. It was that night that Barbera, songwriter and singer/bassist in hardcore punk band Holy Fever, and Ruth who had been producing artists, including Mikky Ekko and Active Child, became inspired to work together again.
What started as a bedroom writing experiment, developed into BEGINNERS by the end of the first night. "Within an hour of writing, we knew we were onto something," Barbera explains. "In just a few months, we ended up writing, recording and mixing an entire record. All in Nick's house."
BEGINNERS delivers well-crafted elements of garage rock with dark electronic pop hooks that fans ofSantigold, Cults, Phantogram, Tegan and Sara and Chromatics will be sure to appreciate. Barbera's attitude-tinged vocals carry the intensity and passion of an artist like Karen O, while Ruth's production captures a moody landscape fit for Depeche Mode's "Violator".
The BEGINNERS EP is mesmerizing and far from predictable. The gigantic hooks of "Who Knows" give way to uncomfortably honest lyricism in "Let Go or Get Dragged" leaving you dancing your way through a movie you shouldn't be allowed to watch, but can't look away from. Swampy, bluesy verses on "So Close I Almost Believed It" unexpectedly combine with a power ballad chorus straight out of an 80s John Hughes movie, before descending into an extended outro that could make Johnny Marr blush. And lest one think she has forsaken her roots, Barbera proves otherwise when the raw garage riffs of "Ever Love" come alive onstage, where she is backed by Holy Fever bandmate, Neeraj Kane (The Hope Conspiracy), and drummer, Jason Walker (The Gamits).

DEATH shares single + Full LP details + Tour dates
DEATH SHARES "NORTH STREET" VIA NPR
ANNOUNCES FULL ALBUM DETAILS VIA PITCHFORK
DEATH III DUE APRIL 22ND VIA DRAG CITY
LISTEN: "North Street" - https://soundcloud.com/drag-city/death-north-st/ Five years after the second life of Death was started with the release of their revelatory 1976 album, For the Whole World to See, Death III slams the door on the vault with a powerful set of songs that bring equal amounts of rock and ethereal soul-searching, in high-fidelity, rich bottomed, studio-grade sound. Alongside songs from 1975, 1976 and 1980,Death III contains two songs from 1992, as the Hackney brothers reconvened nearly a decade after they'd stopped playing together. Death III serves as a companion piece of sorts to the A Band Called Death documentary, tracking the band's movement from spiritual young rockers to older and wiser, bruised-but-undefeated brothers, in pure musical terms.
David Hackney's visual representation of Death was a triangle, where "spiritual," "mental" and "physical" formed the three angles. With this in mind, For the Whole World to See is clearly the physical corner, with its undeniable proto-punk power; Spiritual-Mental-Physicalexplores the mental axis, with Death working through some of their influences, including The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and even ELO, in their practice space. Death III is the spiritual end of the portrait, bookended by the dreamlike rock visions of David Hackney that created and propelled the band called Death.
Death III starts with David inside a deep 1975 guitar improvisation, rising up through atmospheres and prehistoric guitar murk to coalesce in jagged monster-riff-dom. The whole exercise recalls Funkadelic's great Eddie Hazel while reflecting the pure essence of David Hackney's guitar style. This jump-cuts perfectly five years into the future, with the funky staccato of "North Street," which finds the band's punkish approach at it's most aggressive. From there, the album moves back and forth from 1975 and '76 (including two songs recorded at Groovesville in Detroit with the other For the Whole World to See songs) to 1980, showing the band streamlining their frenetic core and maximizing the power. The lyrical focus of the songs "Open Road," "We Are Only People," and "Free" is more in the spirit/soul side of Death as heard on "Let the World Turn" and "Where Do We Go From Here???" - sensitive, searching, reflective. "We Are Only People" is an epic journey that begins with another Funkadelic-styled spoken-word moment, progressing through a spacious solo-guitar-with-harmonies section and into the inevitable rock conclusion. Dark hues are generated by the relentless and speedy "Restlessness" while remaining at a philosophical remove, and "Free" is a heavy duo piece with Bobby and David exploring the meaning of the word. But the album's climax is provided by a trio (once again, the triangle) of David songs, two of which hail from 1992. All three pieces together form a release of the soul of Death from it's dark origins, building optimism upon the harsh realities they'd experienced in their lives, more relaxed without losing the spark and bite of those former times. The unaccompanied guitar instrumental "First Snowfall in Detroit," is David Hackney at his most soulful, which gives way to "We're Gonna Make It," first featured as an emotional climax to the documentary and no less powerful here. With these songs, Death III pays final tribute to David Hackney's thoroughly original voice and vision, now stilled, but captured forever as a part of the remarkable story of Death.
