Following the announcement of their fifth studio album, Vancouver’s Said The Whale has released lead single “Step Into The Darkness” today with NYLON .
"Though fewer in number, the pulse between the remaining members has grown louder and more confident than ever before." LINKS: Listen on SoundCloud // t  // f // i  // you // press photo // album art //
As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide, out on March 31 via Hidden Pony Records, was recorded during a time of significant change. Previously operating as a five-piece, the current trio - made up of frontmen Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester and keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown - entered the studio with no preconceptions and no concrete plan. With the help of We Are The City’s Cayne McKenzie on production duties, the finished product is Said The Whale’s most collaborative, focused album to date. Previous records highlighted the contrast between the two founders’ eclectic rock influences and salt-of-the-earth folksiness. Here, their styles become one.“Step Into The Darkness” exemplifies this cohesiveness. When writing and demoing the song, Ben limited himself to only a drum loop and bass synth, which left room for creativity in the studio. The song came together organically once the band and producer stepped in. Though finalizing the track was a group effort, it still remains incredibly personal and meaningful to Ben: "Step Into The Darkness" was written after a devastating break-up with my girlfriend of six years. The song is me reaching out to comfort my love, reassuring her that she is safe and despite the immense sadness and feeling of loss, perhaps good things will come. We got back together shortly thereafter.”A decade since the JUNO Award-winning band’s formation, they have now taken the project back to its freeform roots while simultaneously venturing forward into uncharted art-pop territory. Despite the album’s many adventurous sonic forays, it remains true to the spirit of their classic work. At its core, As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide is a singer-songwriter record, guided by introspective lyrics and alchemical group harmonies from Ben, Tyler and Jaycelyn. After so much change and uncertainty in recent years, Said The Whale has emerged as a unified force. They’ve evolved, but the DNA is the same, and the group’s musical partnership is more fruitful than ever.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (December 6, 2016) – Noise Pop Festival, the Bay Area’s premiere independent music and arts festival, is announcing today Phase 2 of the music announcement with several additions to the lineup of artists set to perform at the 25th annual event February 17–27, 2017. General Music and Super Fan badges, as well as individual show tickets, are on sale now and available at www.noisepop.com/2017. Coming out of retirement to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Noise Pop is one of the San Francisco music community’s most celebrated rock bands of the last two decades, Creeper Lagoon. The core lineup—consisting of Ian Sefchick, Sharky Laguana, David Kostiner and Dan Carr—hasn’t been on stage together since 2001. Their critically adored debut album, I Become Small and Go, was released in 1998 on Nickelbag Records, the now defunct label run by producer team, the Dust Brothers. Their second album, Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday, was released in 2001 and featured the song “Wrecking Ball.” On Sunday, February 26, Creeper Lagoon will headline the Bottom of the Hill, a venue they played countless times over the years, including a legendary New Year’s show as 1999 rolled into 2000. Individual tickets to this show are $15, and go on sale this Friday.
California rock group Grandaddy, who will release their next album in early 2017 after a ten-year break, will play this year’s festival, along with Welsh alternative rock outfit The Joy Formidable and Rogue Wave, who will be playing a special show at Popscene featuring a set of 80s covers to coincide with the release of their album, Cover Me. A vinyl-only version came out last week on Record Store Day (http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/8704). Among the additional newly announced performers are Radical Face, fronted by Jacksonville singer-songwriter Ben Cooper; Electric Guest; SF-born singer and multi-instrumentalist Hanni El Khatib; Athens rock outfit Mothers; the Oakland-based Aussie Hazel English, whom you may remember from this year’s 20th Street Block Party; and Bay Area rock group The Mother Hips. These artists join previously released performers that include Vince Staples, Ty Segall, Deafheaven, MSTRKRFT, BadBadNotGood (BBNG), Dawes, The Radio Dept., Los Campesinos!, Cloud Nothings, and many more.
The full music lineup will continue to be released in installments between now and February. The list of artists currently announced is included below (with new artists signified by *) and available online at www.noisepop.com/2017/. This lineup is subject to change.

ALESSI NEW VIDEO - WIVES - ONLINE NOW

ALESSINEW VIDEO - WIVES - ONLINE NOW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCq6ZftQ228&app=desktop  Alessi 'Wives'www.youtube.comDirected by Luke Barham Superfan99records.com
Single release 13th January 2017, on  Super Fan 99  http://superfan99.bigcartel.com/product/alessi-wives-8-lathe-cut-vinyl
Three years on from her final album as Alessi’s Ark, Alessi Laurent-Marke prepares for the release of her new album with the single Wives. Wistful with trademark melodies and hooks, Wives is a winsome assertion of female independence.
"Wives is a meditation on womanhood and the powerful roles, responsibilities and loving duties all women strive to fulfil in their lifetimes. Inspired by women in my own family, in my close circle of friends and in widely woven feminine collective.”  says Alessi.
Contrary to what the song title may suggest, Wives is a call to self-reliance and respect, rather than the pursuit of validation through others. “The idea of being someone's wife inspires me to no end. Recently I've come to believe that to be married to oneself, to be committed to nurturing our own spirits, will give us the best chance at growing truly loving relationships with our partners. Who are we if we're aren't present and loving to our own divine thread in this web?”
Wives is the first single from new album released in the new year. Her folk pop has evolved over the years from it’s humble bedroom beginnings and these days has more in common with Cocteau Twins or Charlotte Gainsbourg than the somewhat lazy Joanna Newsom comparisons of old.

Alessi explains this coming of age process, “After a year of touring in support of 'The Still Life', I parted ways with Bella Union and worked in different environments; markets, shops, child minding, making art, healing courses whilst writing new music.”
From uploading home recordings to Myspace to working with Bright Eyes in Nebraska and touring the US with Jenny Lewis and M.Ward it’s been a long and winding road for Alessi which has no doubt shaped her songs. Wives sounds like a very British tale being told in a California desert setting. It’s a beautifully produced and expertly executed taster from the new record which will no doubt excite fans both old and new.
The single release features another new album track 'DLD’ and will be released on download and an extremely limited 8" lathe cut vinyl, manufactured for Super Fan 99 in Tuscon Arizona.

“The understated arrangements suggest you’re listening to a woman with impeccable taste” -MOJO“Singing like a cross between Hope Sandoval and Bjork, Laurent-Marke has made a record of deceptive simplicity” - BBC“It takes several plays to appreciate all the small touches that make each delicate piece” -THE GUARDIAN“The old school songwriting and airy, summery production will leave you utterly spellbound” -CLASH

CATE LE BON US Tour starts next week

US tour kicks off in LA, Highland Park, Jan 12th! http://www.kcrw.com/…/shows/todays-to…/cate-le-bon-rock-pool

"ROCK POOL" 12 INCH IS OUT JANUARY 27TH! Bonus! With the new Cate Le Bon not long gone, here's four candles not placed on the original  Crab Day  cake for you to hear as the titular holiday comes round once again.

Cate writes: "Rock Pool" is the killed darlings from the Crab Day sessions brought back to life on a classic 2-2 formation. Written under the same banner of the impossibly absurd and emerging to unimaginable bedlam."

Produced by Noah Georgeson and Josiah Steinbrick, and featuring musicians H. HawklineStephen Black and Stella Mozgawa, "Rock Pool" spins and swirls the waters with carnival pop, synth, drone and dance, all beamed along the pan-electric ray of Cate's immutable blank stare. Short-and-sweet-play fun of a highly ambiguous nature.

Mark your calendars, Cate Le Bon's new EP "Rock Pool" drops on January 27th! Listen to the title track below and peep her tour dates with Tim Presley.

The day when the Riot grrrl of Sleater-Kinney ignited La Cigale
“The American feminist punk trio Sleater-Kinney…came to present their eighth album, No Cities To Love, on Friday, March 20th in a Cigale full to bursting. A cult concert.

For some, Friday, March 20 was synonymous with solar eclipse and peak pollution. For others, it was mainly the arrival of the Sleater-Kinney in Paris, their eighth album, No Cities To Love, under the arm. The kind of cult rendezvous for feminist punk followers, nostalgic Riot Grrrl and all those who shed a tear when the [band] announced their separation. It was in 2006, and Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker and Janet Weiss had decided to store their guitars for an indefinite period after shaking the feminist rock scene for twelve years. It took them nine to reform and give birth to a new album more pop than punk but still carrying a crazy energy.

To say that the Sleater-Kinney are ultra charismatic on stage would almost be an euphemism. Carrie Brownstein, who has a second career on the small screen in the satyr series Portlandia, martyred her guitar like twenty years ago, while supporting Corin Tucker…singing. Behind them, Janet Weiss, on drums, makes sure of the frenzy of the pieces. Squares of fabric hanging on the back wall float in the air, caressing a light sailing between red and blue. Sublime.

The live is in the image of their albums: abrasive. Without bass or keyboard, their songs bathe in a post-adolescent rebellion, so enjoyable that it sticks you butterflies in the belly. The kind of concert to make you want to go back in time to hang out at Olympia in 1994, preferably with their band.

The trio, accomplice, unrolls a setlist bordering on perfection. The concert opens with ‘Price Tag,’ an explosive bomb from their latest album. A good entry… All [songs are] played with the same animal ferocity.”

But these two reminders, as long as stuffed with old tubes (including the incredible Dig Me Out) will ensure the concert its label "cult". Before concluding, Corin Tucker will call for respect for gender equality, in the purest tradition Riot Grrrl. In 1996, the Sleater-Kinney sang I'm the Queen of rock'n'roll on the delirious ‘I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone.’ Twenty years and a reformation later, the trio proves it more than ever.”
