Moogfest 2017: Program Themes & Lineup Announcement STARTS NOW:Protest+Transhumanism+Sci-Fi...Wolf Eyes+Moor Mother+Nick Zinner+Stranger Things+ More!

Hailed as “the most adventurous and cutting edge” festival of 2016, Moogfest returns with a commitment to futurist conversations and performances that wrestle with our historic moment, and reflect on the festival’s home in North Carolina.

In celebration of its 11th iteration, Moogfest will unveil its lineup over the next 11 weeks through their weekly “Future Thought Future Sound” email newsletter, inviting the Moogfest community  to explore program themes like Transhumanism, Techno-shamanism and Protest.
For this year’s festival, one-time-only presentations are being developed by artists like: Wearable tech maven Nona Hendryx, Activist and Soundscape designer Moor Mother, Prolific Guitarist and Composer Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grammy-nominated ‘Stranger Things’ Composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of S U R V I V E, Experimental multi-instrumentalist The Haxan Cloak, Esteemed Producer Jas Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco, Notorious Noise Band Wolf Eyes Co-presented by Trip Metal Fest, Ambient Pioneer Laraaji Co-presented by Stones Throw/Leaving, Visible Cloaks and Syrinx Co-presented by RVNG Intl., and more...

The independent, annual, four-day festival will take place in
Durham, North Carolina from May 18-21, 2017.  Durham, NC (January 10, 2017): Moogfest is committed to growing a global community of futurists who explore emerging sound technologies and design radical instruments for change. 2017 marks the eleventh iteration of a festival that brings together artists, futurist thinkers, inventors, entrepreneurs, designers, engineers, scientists, and musicians. Moogfest is proud to present its annual event in Durham, North Carolina, alongside a booming technology scene, at the center of the famed Research Triangle, in the beloved home state of the late visionary Dr. Robert Moog. In 2016, Moogfest welcomed 40,000 attendees from 22 countries and 41 states (with 5.6 million livestream viewers), despite boycotts and corporate divestment after HB2, the controversial ‘bathroom bill’. “It’s fitting that Durham is the site of Moogfest once again,” said Shelly Green, President & CEO of the Durham Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Durham has a long history of embracing diversity as well as activism against discrimination, so we welcome Moogfest and this theme with open arms.”

The recent state and national elections, and the ensuing chaos in the North Carolina legislature, affirm the need for safe spaces where creative communities can imagine new and inclusive futures. Moogfest is an independent festival dedicated to this vision. Last year’s keynote presenter, Dr. Martine Rothblatt, founder of Sirius Radio and now CEO of United Therapeutics, a North Carolina-based biotechnology company, offered “...huge praise to the organizers of Moogfest for turning this into a protest festival,” before reminding everyone that “...we are makers, and we have to make our way out of oppression.” This dynamic of resistance alongside creativity returns in 2017 with program themes that includeProtestTranshumanism, and Hacking Systems and legendary artists such as Wolf Eyes who speak very openly about their participation in Moogfest this year: "We have never been activists, but in this day and age it has become clear that we need to use our music as a carrier signal to fight against all forms of prejudice. Rather than boycotting North Carolina, we are excited to participate in building a network of artists and activists by collaborating with Moogfest."

Speaking to the ways in which Moogfest reimagines the typical music festival and tech conference, Moogfest Creative Director, Emmy Parker explains, “We think a little differently about what it means to be a festival. Rather than growing year after year, we’re more concerned with how we can make a bigger impact with everything we do. Our community of makers has the power to design a beautifully innovative and equitable future. It’s our responsibility to provide a platform that encourages them to create this change.”

As Moogfest prepares for its 11th iteration in May, an immense roster of talent will be revealed on a weekly basis through the festival’s free “Future Thought Future Sound” email publication. This weekly digest will also include a varying mix of news, commentary and exclusive content from the Moogfest community of artists and thinkers.

To receive updates and join the global conversation, sign up here. Each week, Moogfest will release exclusive content from artists participating in Moogfest 2017. Today we premiere a new remix by King Britt of Moogfest 2017 artist Moor Mother’s critically-acclaimed “Time Float”."This remix represents Philadelphia at its best, King Britt has been an artist that I have had the honor to perform with and learn many things just by watching him. Time Float speaks about the environmental warfare that continues to plague historical African American and low income communities." - Moor Mother

Hiccup's debut album 'Imaginary Enemies' out March 24th on Father/Daughter Records

HICCUP ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM, IMAGINARY ENEMIES

OUT MARCH 24, 2017 VIA FATHER/DAUGHTER RECORDS

CHRIS GETHARD SHOW BANDMATES WRITE PUNK SONGS FOR THE POP MINDED

LISTEN TO "TEASIN'"

"Teasin' has a pop-punk dual-vocal foundation, but also a murkiness and dissonance that hints at some of Belle And Sebastian's darker moments." - NoiseyThe  Hiccup  origin story is a rather unlikely one for a breakneck paced, harmony-laden indie band. Dual vocalists Hallie Bulleit (formerly of The Unlovables) and Alex Clute first met when they began playing together in the house band on a late-night television program. The Chris Gethard Show – a club house for suburban dorks, outcasts, punks and nerds – is peppered with brief bursts of kinetic pop-punk songs by Clute and Bulleit's TV band, The LLC, about such topics as building birdhouses, having weird body parts, and eating sandwiches (to name but a few). They are micro-pop perfection that are, at most, 30 seconds long and as soon as they’re performed live on the show, they disappear forever as quickly as they appeared, never to be performed or heard again. Alex and Hallie were bonded by their common love of, and capacity for creating memorable pop hooks.

"Eventually after playing together and not really having the ability to be too precious or protective over the songs we were writing for the show due to time constraints," Clute says. "We thought 'Hey, maybe this can translate into something similar but with more of a lasting impression.'"

And thus, with the addition of drummer Piyal Basu, Hiccup was born. Bulleit and Clute began penning songs within the realm of girl-group pop meets buzz saw distorted guitars that the Ramones pioneered, the immediacy of which was later expanded upon by bands such as the Smoking Popes, and the Lookout Records roster. On initial listen, singles like "Lady MacBeth & Miss Havisham" and  "Teasin'"  have that instant resonance of pop appeal. But there is also a dark and stormy element in the production and approach, that hints at Kevin Shields' My Bloody Valentine output or some of the more dissonant Belle And Sebastian moments.

Imaginary Enemies, Hiccup’s debut full-length effort, was produced by Kyle Gilbride (Waxahatchee, Swearin’, All Dogs), and will be released on  Father/Daughter Records on March 24, 2017.https://www.facebook.com/HelloHiccup

Karen Elson To Release New Album on April 7th + Listen to "Distant Shore"

Karen Elson's sophomore album  Double Roses To Be Released April 7th on H.O.T Records Ltd
First Track "Distant Shore" Available Now

English-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Karen Elson will release her sophomore album  Double Roses  on April 7th, 2017 via H.O.T Records Ltd. Elson, who released her debut The Ghost Who Walks in 2010, was recently signed by the LA-based label for the US and 1965 Records (PIAS) for the rest of the world.
First track to be made available is "Distant Shore" featuring Benmont Tench on keys and Laura Marling on backing vocals. Hear it HERE.
Double Roses was recorded in Los Angeles, at the world-renowned United Studios (neé Ocean Way) in Hollywood, with producer Jonathan Wilson (Jackson Browne, Father John Misty, Conor Oberst). Elson, who had been writing and demoing songs throughout her recording hiatus of the past few years, spent three weeks in Los Angeles working with Wilson to put the album together. A long time fan of the sun soaked sounds of the 'Laurel Canyon' era, it was the perfect place to commit her songs to tape. The album features collaborations with an array of musical talent, including The Black Keys' Pat CarneyFather John MistyLaura MarlingBenmont TenchPat Sansone (Wilco)Nate Wolcott (Bright Eyes)Paul Cartwright and Dhani Harrison.
Although it's been almost seven years since Elson last released a full length record - the Jack White-produced debut The Ghost Who Walks - she continued to work on a variety of musical projects over the years. Her appearances were infrequent but always dazzling, from performing "Ashes To Ashes" with Michael Stipe at the David Bowie tribute concert last year, to dueting with Ren Harvieu on the stunning single 'The Train Song', performing for T Bone Burnett's Speaking Clock Review, recording a haunting version of Lyle Lovett's 'If I Had A Boat' for the "Still Alice" movie soundtrack or releasing limited edition covers of Lou Reed or Jackson C Frank songs for Record Store Day.
Growing up in a gritty industrial town in the North of England, music was Elson's first love and refuge, but it was the fashion industry which gave her the escape she was seeking. Plucked off the streets of Manchester as a sixteen year old schoolgirl, her rise to internationally recognized supermodel came early; she has been gracing magazine covers, and working with the most respected designers and photographers in the world for over two decades. Elson, who grew up in a musical household and learned guitar as a teenager, kept her songwriting a secret, even from her friends, until she was in her mid-20s. Her first public performances were as part of the New York City-based politically minded cabaret troupe The Citizens Band. The Ghost Who Walks was written almost entirely from the confines of her bedroom closet where she retreated from her family to write in secret, but Double Roses wasn't such a covert creation. Longing to write and record again, but consumed with parenting two young children and continually in demand by what she affectionately calls "the day job," it took a few years to find the necessary time, perfect collaborators, and the strength of character to go as deep as she needed to delve into her own psyche to create her second album.
"I wrote maybe six songs but I'm very instinctual as a person and I knew that there was one puzzle piece missing that I hadn't tapped into the deepest part myself. I knew I needed to pull that out if I was going to make the record I needed to make." The turning point was "Distant Shore", and after that the floodgates were open, and things she'd kept bottled up for years began pouring out, detailing the emotional geography of her heart, always hovering somewhere between uncertainty and regret, without truly landing on either. But in the end finding out who she really was as a person. "At the end of the writing the album I felt liberated. I felt free. I felt like me," says Elson.
The title Double Roses is taken from a Sam Shepard poem that appears in his journal collection Motel Chronicles. Emotionally struck by the poem, and its reference to England, Elson incorporated the verse as spoken word into the title track and sought Shephard's permission to do so - sending a letter to him via her friend and bandmate Jackson Smith's mother, the poet/musician Patti Smith.

Introducing The Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble

THE LAETITIA SADIER SOURCE ENSEMBLE FIND THEMSELVESFIND ME FINDING YOU IS OUT MARCH 24TH!Another New Year, and new shapes are forming - if only we are fortunate enough to notice them! As we spin through this world, we are witness to all manner of combinations unfolding before us - familiar arcs and breaking waves alike, upon all of which it is our choice, our chance and our challenge, to possibly ride.  Find Me Finding You , the new album from the new organization called the Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble, manages to strike new chords while touching familiar keys in the song of life.
From its percolating opening beat,  Find Me Finding You  locates new systems within the sound-universe of Laetitia Sadier. When we hear synth lines diving, lifting and drifting, unusual guitar textures, the plucked sound of flat wound bass strings or the bottomless pulsing of bass pedals stepping out of the mix with an exquisite vibrancy, this is the sound of the Source Ensemble! This designation implies a new togetherness phase; alongside long-time collaborators Emmanuel Mario and Xavi Munoz, keyboard and flutes parts played by David Thayer were essential contributions, as well as further keys, synths and electronics from Phil M FU and several intense guitar sequences from Mason le Long. The duet with Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor on "Love Captive" (not to mention Rob Mazurek's distinctive coronet playing!) gives voice to an ideological cornerstone of  Find Me Finding You  - that, should we be responsible enough to endeavor into a world of basic incomes and open relationships, we would make astonishing strides as a society. These sorts of things can only be done in agreement with others.
The first single, "Undying Love For Humanity", announces its immediacy with protracted rhythms and pronounced vocal expressions. Laetitia proclaims power to the people--now! It's a call to arms for the public to recognize and exercise their strength for good, which is just what the world needs now at this moment in time. It doesn't hurt that "Undying Love For Humanity" is catchy as hell, now does it?
Expressing great compassion and expectation, as well as an abiding belief in an underlying unity that permeates and intimately binds all things and beings, Find Me Finding You  is set for release on March 24th! Shortly after, in April, Laetitia embarks on a massive UK tour - dates below! LISTEN TO

The Molochs Premiere Debut LP Via Hype Machine

New Single "Charlie's Lips" Debuts On Beats 1

LISTEN & SHARE:  The Molochs - "Charlie's Lips"
Hype Machine is now streaming The Molochs debut album 'America's Velvet Glory'. Over the weekend the band also premiered their third single "Charlie's Lips'" on Beats 1 Radio.  The song follows two prior singles "No More Cryin' " and "You And Me", both of which can be found on the upcoming album which is out 1/13/17 via Innovative Leisure.

The band has also began their month long L.A. Residency. All shows will be on Monday night atThe Echo and are free.First, let’s meet Moloch. You remember him, right? The ancient god, the child eater, the demander of sacrifice, the villain in Ginsberg’s Howl(and also real life) and now the personal antagonist of singer and songwriter Lucas Fitzsimons, who named his band the Molochs because he knew he’d have to make sacrifices to get what he needed, and because he always wanted a reminder of the Ginsbergian monster he’d be fighting against. And so this is how you make a record right now: you fight for every piece, and when Moloch takes apart your relationships and career potential and leaves you sleeping on couches or living in terrifying apartments and just about depleted from awful people involving you in their awful decisions, you grab a bottle of wine (and laugh at the cliché) and put together another song. And once you do that eleven hard-won times in total, you get a record like America’s Velvet Glory: honest, urgent, desperate and fearless because of it.

Fitzsimons came to his calling in an appropriately mythic way, born in a historic city not far from Buenos Aires and raised in L.A.’s South Bay—just outside of Inglewood—where he was immersed in the hip-hop hits on local radio. (Westside Connection!) The summer d before he started middle school, a close friend got an electric guitar, and Fitzsimons felt an enirresistible inexplicable power: “I'd go back home and I’d look up guitar chords on the internet—even though I had no guitar—and just imagine how I WOULD play them. I was slowly getting obsessed.” When he was 12, his parents took him back to Argentina, and on the first night, he discovered a long-forgotten almost-broken classical guitar in the basement of his ancestral home: “It sounds made-up, but it’s true,” he says. “I didn't put the guitar down once that whole trip—took it with me everywhere and played and played. When I got back to L.A., I bought my first guitar practically as the plane was landing.”
This started a long line of bands and a long experience of learning to perform in public, as Fitzsimons honed intentions and ideas and tried to figure out why that guitar seemed so important. After a trip to India in 2012, he returned renewed and ready to start again, scrapping his band to lead something new and uncompromising. This was the true start of the Molochs: “It didn't make any sense to not do everything exactly the way I wanted to do it,” he says. “I was so shy and introverted that singing publicly sounded like a nightmare come true. But I didn't have a choice—I heard something inside of me and I needed to be the one to express it.”

The first album Forgetter Blues was released with Fitzsimons’ guitarist/organist and longtime bandmate Ryan Foster in early 2013 on his own label—named after a slightly infamous intersection in their then-home of Long Beach—and was twelve songs of anxious garage-y proto-punk-y folk-y rock, Modern Lovers demos and Velvet Underground arcana as fuel and foundation both. It deserved to go farther than it did, which sadly wasn’t very far. But it sharpened Fitzsimons and his songwriting, and after three pent-up years of creativity, he was ready to burst. So he decided to record a new album in the spirit of the first, and in the spirit of everything that the Molochs made so far: “I wanted to spend less time figuring out HOW we were gonna do something and just actually do it.”

The result is America’s Velvet Glory, recorded with engineer Jonny Bell at effortless (says Fitzsimons) sessions at Long Beach’s JazzCats studio. (Also incubator for Molochs’ new labelmates Wall of Death and Hanni El Khatib.) It starts with an anxious electric minor-key melody and ends on a last lonesome unresolved organ riff, and in between comes beauty, doubt, loss, hate and even a moments or two of peace. There are flashes of 60s garage rock—like the Sunset Strip ’66 stormer “No More Cryin’” or the “Little Black Egg”-style heartwarmer-slash-breaker “The One I Love”—but like one of Foster’s and Fitzsimons’ favorites the Jacobites, the Molochs are taking the past apart, not trying to recreate it.

You can hear where songs bend, where voices break, where guitars start to shiver and when strings are about to snap; on “You And Me,” you can almost hear Lou Reed’s ghost call for a solo, and on “I Don’t Love You,” you get that subway-sound guitar and find out what happens when Jonathan Richman’s G-I-R-L-F-R-E-N goes wrong. And of course there’s the charismatic chaos of bootleg basement-tape Dylan—always Dylan, says Fitzsimons—and the locked-room psychedelia of Syd Barrett, especially on “Charlie’s Lips,” Fitzsimons’ ode to—or antidote to—those times when he felt the bleakness completely: “Then a bird lands on a branch nearby, you hear leaves fluttering, you hear a child laughing … all of a sudden things don't seem so bad anymore.”

So Moloch might still be out there, devouring his sacrifices, but the Molochs are still fighting, too. And that’s why Fitzsimons picked the band name—it’s so he remembers what he’s up against. He’s not celebrating the destroyer of youth and individuality and creativity, he says: “I’m just keeping him in sight so that he doesn't win.” – Christopher ZieglerTOUR DATES:

SAVOY MOTEL TOUR WITH THE LEMON TWIGS KICKS OFF JANUARY 26TH

Savoy Motel Tour With The Lemon Twigs Kicks Off January 26th Headline Show At The Echo In Los Angeles February 8th Self-Titled Debut Album Available On What's Your Rupture? Records  LISTEN

Photo: Semi Song The debut album by Nashville's Savoy Motel comes from a pedigree of garage, punk, and power-pop groups (bassist Jeffrey Novak founded both Cheap Time and the Rat Traps; drummer Jessica McFarland was also in Cheap Time, and along with guitarists Dillon Watson and Mimi Galbierz, played in Heavy Cream). Savoy Motel transposes the energy and hooks of those groups to an entirely different move: an intensely orchestrated hybrid of glam rock, soul, dance music, and showmanship. “We use rock and roll as a vehicle to reach and promote the feeling of TOTAL FREEDOM,” claims Dillon. “Savoy Motel is defined more by a feeling than a sound.” Savoy Motel achieves a compositional harmony through the meshing of the clockwork precision in the rhythms of each song, with Jessica hammering out the beats alongside a vintage Rhythm King drum machine, and Mimi locking in on guitar, alongside the interplay of three lead vocalists, while Dillon rips intense fuzz leads on every track, and Jeffrey adds the hooks on his bass. Dillon remarks: “After Jeffrey repeatedly insisted that I play more and more like Jimi and Clapton, I realized that he wanted the shit to rock, and that he was not only unafraid of, but actually going for what a lot of contemporaries would consider faux pas. I think we were all ready for something radical and new, and Jeffrey was ready to lead us there.” The whole package opens up their horizons, and yours, to a sound made by four friends tired of witnessing music eat its own tail; with unclouded judgment, creative refinements, and peerless technique, they grab that tail and stick it into a wall socket, putting the cap back on 15+ years of rock revivalism and strident genre adherence. And they make it seem easy. If it was that easy, though, everybody else would be doing it. Look around you. That’s not happening. Savoy Motel is happening. “Whatever musical past we had feels obsolete compared to what we’re doing now,” says Jeffrey. “The past turned its back on us, so we had to turn our backs on the past in order to find our future.” The band have been touring North America and the UK in support of their self-titled debut album on What’s Your Rupture? Records. They now announce new live dates with The Lemon Twigs for January and February.  Videos:Souvenir Shop RockSorry People (all shows with The Lemon Twigs, except 1/28 & 2/8):

Mark Eitzel extends tour and shares "An Answer" from Hey Mr Ferryman

Mark Eitzel just announced the extension of his tour with Howe Gelb in support of his first solo album in five years, titled  Hey Mr Ferryman , which will be in stores on January 27. Beginning with a show in Los Angeles on the 26th, Eitzel will be bringing the songs from his new record all over the world. Listen to the beguiling new track “An Answer,” which Eitzel describes as a “goopy love song about dancing” while  Stereogum describes it as "a romantic ballad with a grand, string-laden scope."
Listen to & share "An Answer" now
Hey Mr Ferryman features the vivid melodies long associated with Eitzel’s former band American Music Club—which remains a cult favorite to this day—as well as producer Bernard Butler’s distinctive guitar that serves to complement Eitzel’s expressive vocals. As both a solo artist and the frontman for AMC, he is a celebrated lyricist and champion of the downtrodden.

Third Man Records Announces Vault #31 - Margo Price One-Year Anniversary Package

VAULT #31 - MARGO PRICE ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY PACKAGE SIGN-UP DEADLINE JANUARY 31

This time last year, Third Man Records was gearing up for the release of Margo Price's debut album  Midwest Farmer's Daughter . This was a straight-out-of-Nashville record that they loved from first listen, and they are beyond thrilled that its release has led to many others discovering this singular and enigmatic artist and coming to love her as much as they do. Margo Price and her band The Pricetags had a banner year full of accolades, television appearances, incendiary live shows, and tons of good times. As Price is a cherished member of the Third Man Records family, the label would like to celebrate this success with the announcement of their latest Vault Package. The package in all its glory will arrive on your doorstep just around the one-year anniversary of the Midwest Farmer's Daughter release.  Margo Price Live at The Hamilton, Washington DC 11-9-2016  Margo and her band rolled into our nation's capital after seven hours on the road on November 8- Election Day - and spent the night in the up-for-grabs city as the results came in and anxieties rose across the country. The very next evening they played one of the most poignant and significant shows of the tour and quite possibly of their careers. As luck would have it, the tape was rolling. The set is a great mix of album tracks, live, road-tested favorites, and a batch of classic country covers from Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, and Billy Joe Shaver. Third Man Records is beyond proud to present this serendipitous landmark live show in a gatefold jacket, housed in a vellum optical sleeve, on double 180-gram vinyl - one green and one white colored vinyl.
