CONOR OBERST & CRAIG WEDREN Share "Justice To A Scream" From 'ALOK', Jodie Foster-Produced Short Doc

CONOR OBERST & CRAIG WEDREN SHARE

“JUSTICE TO A SCREAM”

LISTEN & WATCH LYRIC VIDEO

END TITLE TRACK FROM DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILM

ALOK

DIRECTED BY ALEX HEDISON &

EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY JODIE FOSTER

Today, the filmmakers of the award-winning short documentary ALOK share the film’s end title track, “Justice to a Scream.” Co-written and performed by Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst (he/him) and Shudder to Think’s Craig Wedren (he/him), the track features lyrics that include lines from the film and poetry from the film’s subject, internationally acclaimed non-binary author, poet, comedian, and public speaker Alok Vaid-Menon (they/them). Along with “Justice To A Scream,” ALOK also features a score by Wedren (YELLOWJACKETS) and Simón Wilson.

“Conor Oberst was my idol growing up,” notes Vaid-Menon. “I've always regarded his lyricism as among the very best of contemporary poetry and it's such a full circle moment to collaborate with him on this song. Literally a dream come true. And what a bop!"

“I am a longtime admirer of ALOK,” adds Oberst. “Their powerful writing, art and advocacy for transgender people and all people who suffer from the lunacy of ignorance and bigotry that permeates our society is inspirational. So when the opportunity to work on this song with Craig Wedren came along I was thrilled. I am also a big time, lifelong fan of Craig – from the amazing Shudder to Think records through his various projects and solo work. He possesses a truly one of a kind musical mind and a voice as unique and iconoclastic as he is. He has also been a great and treasured friend of mine for many years. This is all to say I loved working on this project with these two incredible pioneers.”

Filmmaker Alex Hedison (she/they) delivers a compelling portrait of her friend, Alok Vaid-Menon (they/them). This thought-provoking short documentary explores the limitless expression of self, challenges societal norms, and inspires viewers to embrace personal freedom beyond the binaries that divide us. In addition to director/producer Hedison, producers are Natalie Shirinian (she/her), Elizabeth Baudouin (she/her) and Meggan Lennon (she/her), with Jodie Foster (she/her) and Ryan Harrington (he/him) as executive producer. The film also features Dylan Mulvaney (she/they), Chani Nicholas (she/her), and other cultural change makers.

ALOK first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and screened at numerous other festivals over the past months including Telluride, SCAD: Savannah Film Festival, was the Audience Award-winner at the NewFest36 Film Festival for Documentary/Nonfiction Short, as well as winner of Sarasota Film Festival short documentary.

“Alok’s multidimensional influence -- which spans academia, art, poetry, queer theory, and comedy -- inspired the making of this film - my first short documentary” said Hedison. “My aim with this film is to present a world of possibility that they demonstrate while asking the questions: How do we wake up? How do we mirror compassion for ourselves to compassion for those around us? How can we move beyond the binaries and embrace the simultaneity of everything existing and changing at once?”

“We always hoped this film would meet the moment in culture and political conversations, and given how polarized we seem right now, the timing could not be more crucial” added Foster. “This film is about ideas and thought starters to create transformation and to plant the seeds of change for a more inclusive world. In the end, this was a project of love for the entire film team – and we hope it inspires love in others.”

As Alok says in the film: “The most controversial pronoun I have is ‘we’… And what the ‘we’ pronoun actually is insisting, is that I believe that we are all part of a shared, in common … humanity… but it's even beyond humanity, maybe even community. And I believe that the work that I want to do in the world is to look at every single thing that gets exiled from my concept of ‘we’ and find a way to incorporate it back again.”

"Some musicians make you wonder if what they’re doing is some sort of ironic mischief. Not Greg Freeman. He really means every word, bashing away on his electric guitar as bandmates on bass, drums, saxophone, and pedal steel guitar add rich colors to his visions."
-
Rolling Stone

"There’s a certain Vermonter who made a really tremendous singer-songwriter record in 2022, and his name is Greg fucking Freeman—he also happens to be one of the best guitarists alive. I Looked Out is dripping with feedback, distorted by the reliquary of Florida men, sobering, end-times-ridden folklore and a Holy War of the interpersonal woven into the God-fearing and mysterious."
-Paste

"'The Celtic thrum of noise that kicks off his album is a bit of a red herring (it’s full of hopelessly addicting indie-rock bops), and while a track like “Colorado” is missing shoegaze tenets like “glide guitar,” the voluminous crescendos (packed in tight with warm, tattered horn blasts) create a shoegaze-like effect, and “Souvenir Heart” indeed uses the unmistakable yowl of a distorted ‘gaze guitar."

Stereogum

"I’m late on this one — it’s my favorite album of 2022 that I discovered in 2023... It’s obvious that Freeman has worshipped at the altar of the late, great Jason Molina, though he also brings his own influences (particularly ’90s indie rock in the form of Neutral Milk Hotel and Guided By Voices) to the table. What I’m saying is that this is yet another blown-out country-rock record that sometimes delves into pure noise. (I can’t get enough of this formula lately.)"
Uproxx

Vermont's finest, Greg Freeman, has recently signed with Canvasback/Transgressive Records. To celebrate this exciting partnership, his critically acclaimed debut LP, I Looked Out, is being re-released today, complete with two bonus tracks. The vinyl version is scheduled for release on January 17, 2025. This reissue features a new rendition of "Long Distance Driver (Acoustic)," which includes a special collaboration with Merce Lemon. Greg describes the track and accompanying video as a heartfelt exploration of... [insert your description here]. Additionally, the final bonus track, exclusive to the vinyl release, is a captivating mashup titled "Sound Tests, Scraps, Lists," which weaves together sounds, songs, and snippets collected during the creation of this masterful debut.

Greg on the track, "I wrote this song a few years ago, when the world was entering a scary and uncertain time, and hope seemed fleeting and very far in the distance.  The song is about wanting to find connection in such a world.  In a way, it feels like an old song to me at this point, but that place of uncertainty feels even more pronounced than when I wrote it.  The acoustic version is just more sparse.  There's a harmonica instead of a saxophone.  There's no drums either.  Merce does the high part and I do the low part.  I also play the concertina in the recording.  Our friend Nate Campisi recorded the song at Mr. Smalls studio in Pittsburgh (where we also recorded the video).  It used to be an old church."

Greg Freeman’s album I Looked Out has been garnering praise from notable critics, with Steven Hyden of UPROXX calling it “my favorite album of 2022 that I discovered in 2023,” and  Paste Magazine  naming it among the 25 Best Debut Albums of the 2020s. The magazine went further, hailing it as “one of the best rock records of this generation.”

His noisy art-rock Americana will be put on display for his London debut at The Line Of Best Fit Show with Greg Mendez on January 15th in London.

Tickets for these dates are on sale now. Find more information and tickets HERE.

Elvis Costello & Steve Nieve Announce U.S. Dates In February & March 2025

Elvis Costello & Steve Nieve Announce U.S. Dates In February & March 2025

Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve have announced a 15-date tour which opens in Easton, PA on February 19, 2025 and takes in the Count Basie Center For The Arts in Red Bank, NJ, the Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY and two nights at the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock, NY.

The tour will visit Wilmington, DE, Beverly, MA, Portsmouth, NH, Montclair, NJ, Ithaca and Buffalo, NY, and Ann Arbor, MI, playing selections from a songbook that is fifty years long and twice as deep.

Costello is one of the world's greatest songwriters, up there with McCartney. You forget how many timeless songs he actually has until he plays them.” - Irish Independent

The tour concludes with a three-night engagement at Park West in Chicago at which Costello and Nieve will be joined by Eleanor Whitmore on fiddle, Tony Garnier on double bass, Shaye Cohn on cornet and Sean McKeon on Uilleann pipes.

“Transcendent Musical Moments” – The Scotsman

These dates follow on from the acclaimed Costello & Nieve tours of 2023/4 which traveled from the Palau de la Música, Barcelona to the Oslo Opera House and from the Béla Bartók Concert Hall Budapest to the Paris Philharmonie - augmented by trumpet, reeds, cell and percussion before visiting Japan and playing three sold-out shows in Tokyo and one night in Osaka, in April 2024.

Their 2024 dates in the UK and Ireland included a momentous show at the Liverpool Olympia recruiting seven horns - student, graduates and tutors from LIPA - the performing arts school founded by Paul McCartney.

That night was described as:

“Soul music to warm the coldest of hearts” - Liverpool Acoustic

The 2024 tour concluded with two sold-out concerts at the London Palladium and a sold-out four-night stand at Vicar Street, Dublin. The second London show and the last two nights in Dublin also featured the Brodsky Quartet with whom Costello and Nieve have collaborated with over a thirty year period and with Uilleann piper, Sean McKeon also joining the last of these Vicar St. dates.

“Elvis Costello remains the most fascinating songwriter Britain has produced in the past 50 years” – The Spectator

On November 1, 2024, UMe released, 'King Of America & Other Realms' - a 6-CD collection tracing Elvis Costello's travels from his 1986 album recorded in Hollywood through his work in the American musical cities and towns of New Orleans, LA; Oxford and Clarksdale, MS; and Nashville and Memphis, TN and brought up to the present day with a haunting minor key arrangement of “Brilliant Mistake” recorded in Cape Fear, NC.

Costello challenges us to confront the stories we inherit and the places we inhabit. Almost 40 years later, "King of America" remains Costello's map of disillusionment and aspiration, both timeless and acutely of its moment, a kingdom where invisible walls define the boundaries of our dreams” - Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Costello’s 35-page accompanying essay for the 'King Of America & Other Realms' box-set traces the forty year collaboration and friendship with songwriter and producer, T Bone Burnett, the latest installment which is “The True Story of The Coward Brothers” an Audible Original comedic drama, written by Elvis Costello and directed by Christopher Guest in which Burnett and Costello take the roles of the rock and roll charlatans and charmingly deluded siblings “Henry and Howard Coward” in a cast which includes Harry Shearer and Rhea Seehorn.

The 20-track accompanying album, 'The Coward Brothers' was released in November 2024 by New West Records and features the full-length renditions of the songs heard in the course of what the author refers to as “a wireless address”.

Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve have been cohorts and bandmates since 1977, appearing together on more than twenty-five recordings and performing on stages from the Grosse Freiheit 36 in Hamburg to the Royal Albert Hall in London, debuting songs such as “Accidents Will Happen” and “Shot With His Own Gun” with only piano accompaniment and playing their first two-man shows in 1995, then undertaking “The Lonely World Tour” together in 2003.

“Nieve is astonishing, like the ghost of George Gershwin being watched  over by Philip Glass” - Irish Times

Steve Nieve is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of Elvis Costello and the Attractions and the composer of “Welcome To The Voice,” an opera written with Muriel Teodori, which was produced at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris and later recorded for Deutsche Grammophon. He has played with Elvis Costello and The Imposters since 2002.

Maribou State Share “Dance On The World”

MARIBOU STATE SHARE NEW SINGLE
"DANCE ON THE WORLD"

FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM
HALLUCINATING LOVE
OUT JANUARY 31 VIA NINJA TUNE

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR SET FOR SPRING 2025

Today, Maribou State — the duo made up of Chris Davids and Liam Ivory — share new single “Dance on the World;” an instant classic that combines a nostalgia for 2000s ethereal club music and a purely modern take on synth pop, leaving a slightly psychedelic flavor on the tongue. It’s the third single to be shared from their highly anticipated new album Hallucinating Love, set for release on January 31 via Ninja Tune. Listen to "Dance on the World" and preorder Hallucinating Love here.

“Dance on the World” arrives shortly after the release of recent singles “Bloom” and “Otherside,” featuring long-time collaborator and vocalist Holly Walker, which received widespread support from the likes of PitchforkNMEClashThe Line of Best Fit, and Mixmag.

The duo also just announced a massive North American tour for Spring 2025, their first full band live dates on the continent in six years, with stops in New York, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, and many more. See all the tour dates below and find tickets here.

The shows will mark a triumphant and poignant moment for the duo, following the news shared earlier this year by Chris Davids that he had undergone a major operation for a rare brain condition, from which he has only just begun to return to the studio and rehearsals full time.

"Dance on the World" is out now, buy/stream it here.

“‘A Werewolf and A Girl’ was written in August of 2021, around 40 years after I fell for my high school sweetheart,” says Patterson Hood. “The song juxtaposed our falling in love and our breakup a year later. Once I cut the demo, I knew I wanted a woman to sing the choruses from the girl’s point of view. And in my head, it was always going to be Lydia. I mean, I didn’t really even have a second choice. The subject matter’s kind of provocative, so I wouldn’t have wanted to ask somebody that I didn’t feel was a friend. I wouldn’t want someone to be uncomfortable and then just not want to talk to me anymore. What I didn’t count on was that when I asked Lydia if she would be interested in doing it, she actually happened to be in the studio and did it the next day. And that’s what’s on the record.”

Hood’s fourth solo album and first in over 12 years, Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams sees the veteran singer, guitarist, and songwriter exploring his youth and young manhood in a collection unlike anything in his ever-evolving catalogue. It is inspired in part by his own short story, “The Exploding Trees,” in which Hood tells the tale of a natural disaster that occurred in his North Alabama hometown just as he turned 30 and relocated to Athens, GA where Drive-By Truckers were co-founded in 1996. The album gathers songs that have amassed over the remarkably prolific songwriter’s career, many of which provided him with distraction and creative sustenance during lockdown, others which have resided among his notebooks for years, including the string-driven “Airplane Screams,” written over four decades ago but never successfully recorded until now.

The album was further driven by his friendship with producer/musician Chris Funk, a “profound chemistry” forged upon Hood’s 2013 move to Portland, OR. Having long discussed a collaboration, in 2023 the stars finally aligned, and they set to work on recording this new album which Hood intended to be “a bigger departure” from Drive-By Truckers and his previous solo efforts than ever before.

Working together at a number of Portland studios, Hood accomplished his goal, in part by writing much of the album on piano in a vigorous attempt to expand his parameters in new, heretofore uncharted, directions. While he planned to bring in a professional pianist for the recording sessions, Funk, eager to push his friend from his comfort zone, encouraged Hood to play the parts himself. Hood further took the opportunity to explore sounds outside the boundaries and obligations of his day job, deviating from his traditionally guitar-driven palette to create richly textured arrangements marked by the inclusion of strings, woodwinds, and vintage analog synthesizers.

The result is an ingeniously baroque Americana song cycle, fueled by Hood’s finely drawn character studies and gift for clear-eyed self-examination. Songs like “Pinocchio” and “Miss Coldiron’s Oldsmobile” are nakedly autobiographical and remarkably unflinching, steeped in the past but very much informed by who Hood is in the here and now. With its powerful textural clarity and Hood’s literary strengths at the fore, Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams coalesces as a staggering investigation into how time can shed light on the recesses of memory, revealing an exceptionally gifted songwriter’s resolute inclination to look back through the golden haze in order to grapple with the darkness and secret truths that perhaps weren’t understood or reckoned with at the time.

“You remember it one way, but when you really dip into it, when you really look back, the world was a different place,” Patterson Hood says. “Things were accepted that wouldn’t be accepted now and things you didn’t understand then make sense now.

“This record has all these kind of unintended themes. I don’t know if that was anything I set out to do as much as it just kind of worked out that way. You know, there are a lot a lot of happy accidents in this record.”

The cover art for Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams is by Frances Thrasher, an artist from Athens, GA. “She recently put up a show called Heaven4TheYoung that really blew me away,” says Hood. “I was especially moved by one painting in the series, and she was kind enough to let me use it for the cover. I honestly didn’t have a second choice.”

Currently traveling the US with Drive-By Truckers on their hugely successful Southern Rock Opera Revisited 2024 Tour, Hood will celebrate the arrival of Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams with a run of US headline dates. The Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams 2025 Tour – which will feature backing from his band, The Sensurrounders, with support from special guest Lydia Loveless – gets underway March 19 at Brooklyn, NY’s Brooklyn Made, with stops in DC, Atlanta and Nashville, while finishing up at The Whirling Tiger on April 5. Local and Venue Presales begin Thursday, November 21 at 10:00 am (local). All remaining tickets will be released to the general public on Friday, November 22 at 10:00 am (local). Additional dates will be announced soon.

“I’m putting together a kind of stripped-down band so we can go do this record right,” Hood says. “Now the challenge to see if I can pull off a few of the songs on piano live. There’s nothing but good to come from it. I think good has come from each of my solo records, they each made me better at what I do in various different ways.”

In the meantime, Hood will wrap up his busy year with an already announced series of upcoming solo dates beginning December 3 at Deerfield, MA’s Tree House Brewing Company and then continuing through a very special three-night holiday stand at Portland, OR’s Show Bar set for December 18-20. This 50th-anniversary Super Deluxe Edition is a true celebration of a remarkable album that embraces the groundbreaking music, giving the whole band’s insight alongside evocative imagery and unseen photos. Ultimately, it celebrates the huge magnitude of what this record is, which Alexis Petridis sums up perfectly in the opening paragraph of the liner notes…

“Perhaps it makes sense that an album as complex as The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway has an equally complex history. The saga of its making is a strange and lengthy one, involving rat-infested country houses, uncanny presentiments of the future—or at least the future of rock music—Hollywood directors, personality clashes and inflatable penises. It’s also occasionally controversial: Talking to the former members of Genesis about The Lamb…nearly half a century on, it’s hard not to be struck by the fact that they seldom agree about it. Some members of the band have said they think it’s the best album of their career. Others think of it as a brave but flawed experiment. Some people view it as the absolute apotheosis of early-’70s progressive rock: a double concept album filled with dense, intricate, ever-shifting music, featuring a plot so knotty and strange even some members of the band didn’t understand it (“Ask Peter—I’m just the drummer,” shrugged Phil Collins when a journalist quizzed him about it shortly after release) and subject to one of the most famously theatrical live presentations in rock history. Some people think it presages the arrival of punk rock. In fact, there’s every chance that The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is all those things—flawed experiment, career highlight, prog masterpiece, weirdly prescient precursor of punk—at once, which might account for its longevity.”

TOMMY CASH RELEASES HIGH FASHION EP HERE
WITH PRODUCTION BY A. G. COOK, IC3PEAK, UMRU

AMERICAN TOUR STARTS DECEMBER 11th IN LOS ANGELES
(tour dates below)

Artist photo credit - Dmitrri Gerasimov

Today, the cultural phenomenon TOMM¥ €A$H releases his HIGH FASHION EP, including the A. G. Cook produced “High Fashion,” “Beat Rock” and Hottie” which are produced by UMRU, and the IC3PEAK produced “Nostromo.” TOMM¥ €A$H is known for his bold visuals and unique sounds. Not only a rapper, he is an accomplished visual artist, and fashion icon, bringing together post-Soviet aesthetics and global trends through a mix of raw tenderness and twisted humor. He’s about to set both feet firmly on the ground in Europe and North America again in November and December to support his HIGH FASHION EP. Tour tickets are available now here.

HIGH FASHION embarks on a journey through four distinct eras, each infused with Tommy's signature irony and experimental flair. Tommy describes the EP as a retrospective voyage: "These are a lot of the sounds I loved growing up and that have shaped me." He originally considered naming the EP *Swag*, a term he views as "dated and old," yet notes, "With the quick fashion/trend cycles, this word becomes relevant, just like these styles, again and again."

Listen/download HIGH FASHION EP

The HIGH FASHION EP is the follow-up release to the NSFW “UNTZ UNTZ” (aka Sex Olympics) music video co-directed with Alina Pasok, which he released in early August.

TOMM¥ €A$H has always been an artist in huge demand, working with some of the biggest and most cutting-edge producers, musicians, and fashion designers, including Rick Owens, Maison Margiela, Diplo, Boys Noize, A. G. Cook, Danny L Harle, Charli XCX, 100 Gecs, Modeselektor, Salvatore Ganacci, Caroline Polachek, $uicide Boy$ etc. All the while, he has always been and still is an independent artist with full creative control.

His videos have continuously seen international success, with a live rendition of the single “Little Molly” boosting over 17 million views on YouTube alone. After blowing up the Estonian entertainment scene, Tommy’s success has quickly transcended his home country and he’s known for his twisted sense of humor and unique creative output across the globe. In 2022 he hit the US and EU with his long-awaited headline World Tour where he presented the album ¥€$ and EP MONEYSUTRA in about 50 cities as a special guest of Oliver Tree. He’s known to perform at the biggest festivals, such as Glastonbury, Sziget and Roskilde.

"'The Bees' is a true highlight from the record, characterized by Mercer’s distinctive vocal performance, rippling indie rock soundscapes, cryptic poeticism, and sprawling songwriting."
Under the Radar

"Mercer’s singular voice, nightmare-bent and horror-pained, has put him in league with such eccentric vocalists as Tom Waits and Frank Black, and he shares with them the status of the truly inimitable."

Pitchfork

"[He’s A] Lonely Song in particular is one of Frog Eyes’ best no-frills rock tracks in almost a decade."

"Beautiful, noisy and singularly Frog Eyes"
Brooklyn Vegan

"Mercer’s singular voice, nightmare-bent and horror-pained, has put him in league with such eccentric vocalists as Tom Waits and Frank Black, and he shares with them the status of the truly inimitable. That his voice survived throat cancer undiminished is all the more extraordinary. It’s what gives Violet Psalms its otherworldly power—especially on its two final songs, 'Unconscious Missive' and 'Pay for Fire,' heartening demonstrations of Mercer’s expressiveness and range."
Pitchfork

"Violet Psalms finds Frog Eyes going out in a burst of vitality. It's a mesmerizing album, full of world-weary terror and transcendent grace."
Exclaim!

Today, Vancouver indie-rock greats Frog Eyes share "E-E-Y-O-R-E (That's Me!)", their latest single.

Frog Eyes on the track, ""E-E-Y-O-R-E" has that riff that happens in the middle and end of the song, and it’s rare, and I like it. When we play it live, our keyboard player Shyla will often look at my guitar with enthusiasm and encouragement. The song itself is a bit about loneliness, fear, isolation, the irony that we all are simultaneously bombarded with these isolating emotions, but unable to bust out of these individual spheres.  Eeyore: our collective familiar, our beloved daemon.

When Derek laid out the concept of the video, I thought of my favourite music video ever, "Sabrina" by Einstürzende Neubauten.  In the end, in the execution, very different, but conceptually not that far off.  It's economical in form, distinctive and effective, all describers that we strive for."

Frog Eyes - "E-E-Y-O-R-E (That's Me!)" [OFFICIAL VIDEO]This video was directed by Derek Janzen.
Derek on the video, "When Carey sent E-E-Y-O-R-E over to see if I had any video ideas, the song title alone got my mind moving. And after listening through a few times, and thinking about the lore of Eeyore, this archetype of sadness that he encapsulates, it made me wonder what other characters put out a similar image of loneliness.

For whatever reason, black metal guys seemed to make sense to me as a visual representation of those emotions. And even though this look behind the curtain of a quite extreme form of artistic expression is portrayed rather humorously, my feeling is that all types of art-making tend to be pretty vulnerable to pursue in their own ways. This look behind the curtain of a quite extreme form of artistic expression is portrayed with sentimentality, softness and caring, as it is my feeling that all types of art-making tend to be pretty vulnerable to pursue in their own ways."

LA's The Tulips shares new video "Haven't Seen Her" ahead of new LP

LA duo The Tulips shares new video "Haven't Seen Her" ahead of new LP

LA band The Tulips recently announced the release of their fourth LP, Halcyon Beach, due in early 2025. You can watch their new video for "Haven't Seen Her" HERE

Jared Petrich and Dana Rogge met through a series of unfortunate and fortunate events in a dive bar in Los Angeles at a musical night put on every Sunday by a community of seasoned musicians. Like two magnets, they were instantly drawn together. It wasn’t long before they began singing, traveling, and writing songs together, seeking inspiration in the omnipresences of higher spiritual realms that linger in the natural world. These adventures ultimately culminated in the creation of The Tulips.

Petrich is the singer, guitar player, and sometimes bassist. Rogge sings backup, playing keys and percussion. Since then, Petrich has toured nationally and internationally with other bands, including his own, and the pair have watched their fan base grow all over the world and become licensed in several films and on network television.

The band has evolved from its early roots of singing and writing folk songs to a more ethereal and psychedelic indie rock band, with other players joining in. The Tulips have three beautiful albums that have received high marks from critics and fans alike. Echoes and Dust wrote: "Keeping a firm contemporary edge to their music, they have stepped ahead of their peers in the Cosmic Americana scene and created an album that feels completely timeless."  The Deli shared: "The languid pace is conveyed with seductive splendor, and the Macarthur residents make hurt sound beautiful in the spacious, burning sorrow that persists."

The band's fourth album, Halcyon Beach, is their most collaborative and ambitious project to date. The new album is filled with layered harmonies, grandiose build-ups, reverberated guitars, and vocals, with a dreamy undertone capturing the ebb and flow of what it means to experience life and the existential dissonance that seeps in from the unknown we all experience. Halcyon Beach was engineered and co-produced by Matt Schuessler and The Tulips at Mante Studios in Glassell Park. The album consists of Jared Petrich singing lead vocals, backup vocals, guitar, lead guitar, bass, keys, and slide guitar. Dana Rogge on the keys and backup vocals. Adam Halferty on drums. Fred Garbutt playing piano and keys, Matt Schuessler on bass and backup vocals, and Jimmy Welsh on backup vocals.

In June of 2024, Guided By Voices released their 40th album, Strut of Kings, to much acclaim. Bandleader Robert Pollard and the longest running GBV lineup of members Doug Gillard, Kevin March, Mark Shue and Bobby Bare Jr, have recorded and incredible string of of 17 albums since 2017.

Today, the band is excited to announce the 18th Guided By Voices album in 10 years, aptly titled Universe Room. Packing a vast mix of energy levels and previously undiscovered constellations of sounds into 17 diverse tracks over a compact space of less than 40 minutes, the new record ventures into truly surprising territory, where barely any song segments are revisited, typical choruses are a thing of the past, and fidelity daringly shifts between lo-fi and hi-fi.

The unique audio palette certainly wasn’t unintentional on the parts of bandleader Robert Pollard and stalwart producer Travis Harrison“I wanted to create, hopefully, an experience, kind of a wild ride, where the listener would want to hear it multiple times in order to grasp all the sections and fields of sound to discover something new with each listen,” says Pollard. “I trimmed down the songs so that there wasn't a lot of repetition, so you get a lot of sections that happen only once or twice.”

The unprecedented approach to the expansive songwriting adds to the surprising new frontiers of aural sensations from Pollard and members Gillard, March, Shue and Bare Jr. “I wanted to get a little more sonic diversity for this album,” says Pollard, “So I asked each member of the band to record all the instruments for one song and I did three songs myself.”

March’s contribution, opener “Driving Time”, kicks off the record with the nighttime chirping of crickets before adding layers of guitar and percussion, creating a spectral and distinctive new atmosphere for GBV, which is echoed by Gillard's spacey off-the-cuff guitar work in the outro of lead single “Fly Religion”. Guitarist Doug Gillard was recently featured in Guitar Player Magazine and picked in Rolling Stone’s 250 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time.

“For the rest of the songs, we used a lot of different approaches to the recording of both the instruments and the vocals,” adds Pollard, which is evident on tracks like “Clearly Aware”, where the band was completely recorded on just one mic.

Universe Room embodies a realm of new horizons for Guided By Voices, who continue to redefine and expand as they blast off to unpredictable worlds.

"Fly Religion" is available on streaming services this Friday, November 22nd. Universe Room is due for release on February 7, 2025.
