Cindytalk, the mercurial expressionist outlet of Scottish artist and musician Cinder, thrives on chance and transformation, collaging elements of noise, balladry, soundtrack, catharsis, and improvisation. An evolution of her early 1980s Edinburgh-based punk band The Freeze, Cinder launched the project upon moving to London, inspired by the crossroads of exploratory UK post-punk and early European industrial.

After a series of celebrated albums for the Midnight Music label as well as collaborations with This Mortal Coil and Cocteau Twins, Cinder migrated to the States, becoming involved with various underground techno collectives around the Midwest and West Coast. Subsequent relocations to Hong Kong and Japan further expanded Cindytalk's horizons, resulting in a fruitful partnership with Viennese experimental institution Editions Mego, for whom she released five full-lengths of swooning, granular atmosphere.

In 2021, Cinder partnered with Dais Records to release several new projects alongside a series of long-awaited back catalog reissues, starting with elusive albums Wappinschaw (1995) and The Wind Is Strong… (1990). Now the focus shifts to Cindytalk's 1984 seminal goth rock debut, Camouflage Heart, a fearless work that feels even more singular and prescient now forty-plus years beyond its release.

"We were trying to find our own space," says Cinder of the formative period Camouflage Heart emerged from, amidst a move from Edinburgh to London and Cinder's evolving exploration of gender identity, well before culture at large was equipped to understand. With contemporary discourse we see that the project manifested her transgender ideas as visceral music. The guttural, feral sound marked a notably darker turn from The Freeze's six-year run on the fringes of punk. Changing the project's name became vital, not just because they kept hearing the former was already taken, but the desire to embody the spiritual and sonic shift, "to uncover new pathways…to feminize it," she says.

Cinder, with bandmates David Clancy and John Byrne, arrived at Cindytalk, a winking nod to Sindy, the British fashion doll rival to Barbie known then for its pull-string talking mechanism. "The goal was to have a more interesting narrative, more interesting dialogue. Music was ultimately my only way of talking to people. That was my conversation with the world, an abstracted conversation…an attempt to make some kind of tiny, tiny mark, if possible, you hope somebody will notice." Over the years, Cinder has heard from fans who did pick up on the signals and find refuge in Camouflage Heart. Subtle then, but she connects the dots more clearly now, playfully suggesting Dais reissue the long out-of-print vinyl in pink — "It had to be Barbie pink" — underscoring the mischief that's been there all along beneath the silvery surface of Cindytalk.

The other goal in 1983 was to land a record deal and develop the band's roving curiosities in a proper studio, something The Freeze could never do outside of two Peel sessions. Soon came their signing to Midnight Music and opportunities for Cinder to sing outside of the project, contributing to This Mortal Coil's Sixteen Days/Gathering EP and It'll End In Tears album. These forays into a more pop-oriented structure allowed Cinder to see her voice in extremes, with Cindytalk drifting towards the dissonant end of the spectrum. Citing Brian Eno's use of the studio as a compositional tool, an instrument, Cinder and the band became immersed in the process at London’s Gateway Studio. "We were determined to take our time and try to learn how to use a studio and stretch ourselves."

Photo By Richard Hurding | Cinder in Camouflage Heart Era

Camouflage Heart plays with tension and pace, from creeping to feverish to claustrophobic. The percussion moves between restless marches and barely-there pulses; for some parts, they scratched and hit a tin bath, among other objects. Guitar lines vibrate and stab as Cinder contorts her voice freely. She pulls poetry from a cerebral abyss, like ‘make the snake in your eye, pierce the camouflage heart’ on the slow-droning centerpiece “The Spirit Behind the Circus Dream.” In that register is raw power, both vulnerable and menacing, an ability to locate something deep and emotionally charged within. "I still remember that person who was way too intense for their own good," Cinder reflects. "I couldn't make a record like that now, certainly not vocally, while that anger hasn't dissipated; there's still a kind of warrior."

For all the destruction and disintegration of Camouflage Heart, Cinder maintains the objective was never full-on fatalistic; these songs seek not to destroy but to poke and provoke, to transform and heal, to find cracks of light in a crumbling world. She points to the last lines of the album’s opening track, "It's Luxury": ‘Don't look down,’ the lyric pines through static and rhythm. Cinder extrapolates, "I'm essentially saying, just keep fucking going. As time went on, for me, that falling became flying. ‘Camouflage Heart’ is the beginning of believing in flight."

(March 25th, 2025) - Acclaimed producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Emma-Jean Thackray shares her latest single, "Maybe Nowhere" off her highly anticipated album Weirdo set for release on April 25th via Gilles Peterson’s label Brownswood Recordings in conjunction with Parlophone and East West Records. “Maybe Nowhere” is a heavy guitar and drum track that showcases Emma-Jean’s deep vocals and builds into a satisfying chorus refrain. The single comes alongside a video featuring highly saturated visuals of Emma-Jean playing the song alone in her bedroom.

Emma-Jean shares about the new single, “After losing my partner I didn’t want to be here anymore, but hiding these feelings and thinking you’re a burden is what makes them even more dangerous. You need a place to explore these feelings and for me that’s music - my safe space. This song is a diary of when those feelings for me were at their worst, and the cavernous ending is wondering what it sounds like to die. Making this song, this album, is why it’s a wondering and not a reality; it saved my life.”

Drawing on an eclectic mix of influences—grunge, pop, soul, p-funk, and jazz— the upcoming album Weirdo is a triumphant celebration of survival and individuality. Written, performed, recorded, mixed, produced and arranged entirely by Thackray in her South London flat, the album stands as a testament to her extraordinary musicianship and fearless self-expression.

Alongside the new single Emma-Jean is also announcing a run of European tour dates with Kamasi Washington beginning in the UK in early April with stops in Manchester, Glasgow, Dublin, Cologne and Amsterdam. Emma-Jean will also play a string of in-store performances in the UK and a range of festivals across the EU including End of the Road, MoMo Festival, World Wide Festival and We Out Here Fest.

Previous releases from the forthcoming album include “It’s Okay” and “Wanna Die,” the latter a striking blend of frenetic energy and emotional vulnerability. With its scattered, uptempo beat driving the track forward, “Wanna Die” juxtaposes its rhythmically playful foundation against poignant reflections on mortality and resilience. “Black Hole” featuring Reggie Watts introduced the new record late last year, a delectable slice of P-funk that channels everything from jazz, pop, and soul in signature Emma-Jean Thackray style.

Originally conceived as a meditation on neurodivergence and mental health, Weirdo evolved after the unexpected loss of her long-term partner from natural causes in January 2023, resulting in an album that feels deeply personal and universal. With intricate compositions, raw emotion, and an unflinching authenticity, Weirdo is more than an album; it’s a masterpiece of resilience, a celebration of individuality, and a bold leap forward for an artist at the forefront of British music. Blurring the lines between genre and emotion, Weirdo evokes comparisons to Meshell Ndegeocello, Kate Bush and Nirvana—on the dancefloor.

Emma-Jean’s journey to becoming one of the most talked-about figures in contemporary music has been anything but conventional. Born in West Yorkshire and classically trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Trinity Laban Conservatoire, she spent her early career defying musical boundaries with her genre-blending sound. Emma-Jean grew up in a low-income, working-class family. This alone makes her unusual, when over 92% of actors, musicians and writers grew up cushioned by medium or high-income backgrounds, according to the Office for National Statistics. Her rise to prominence included her self-released EP Walrus (2016) and the Jazz FM award-winning Yellow (2021), which solidified her position as one of the UK's most innovative musicians and saw her performing at iconic venues and festivals, from the London Symphony Orchestra to numerous Glastonbury slots.

The new project heralds the start of a new musical chapter for Emma-Jean as part of the revered Brownswood Recordings (Yussef Dayes, KOKOROKO). An institution proudly rooted in London’s diverse music community, the label has become a hub for eclectic genre-defying music and feels like the perfect home for a boundary-blurring musical force such as Thackray.

Pachyman's "In Love," a dub salve for a long winter

PACHYMAN LINKS DUB + CHILLWAVE ON THE EFFERVESCENT "IN LOVE"

WATCH THE "IN LOVE" VIDEO HERE

THE LATEST FROM NEW ALBUM ANOTHER PLACE (MAY 23 / ATO RECORDS)

UPCOMING SHOWS INCLUDE INDIEPLAZA RECORD STORE DAY SHOW IN NYC ON APRIL 12, DATES SUPPORTING DARKSIDE + EUROPE / UK DATES

Today, Pachyman — the musical project of Puerto Rican-born, Los Angeles-based musician Pachy Garcia — shares the warm and wobbling "In Love," the latest single from Another Place (May 23 / ATO Records). On "In Love," Pachy's signature dub sound is imbued with a joyful, egg-melting-on-the-sidewalk haze in the vein of Washed Out or Neon Indian. It's a canny sonic link-up, emblematic of the adventurous, recombinant sounds that populate the new album.

The VHS-warped video is not only a suitable accompaniment to the track's vibe, but an introduction to a new quartet lineup that Pachyman will be introducing on upcoming Europe / UK tour dates: Pachy on drums and vocals, Javier Perez on guitar, Jordan Brooks on bass, and Diego Gaeta on keys.

Watch the "In Love" video here.

Another Place is Pachyman’s most daring project to-date, one that builds upon its forebears by leaning into the idiosyncratic elements lurking beneath previous projects. In doing so, it synthesizes the myriad scenes that have recontextualized the methods and aesthetics of dub — from pioneering synth-pop weirdos like William Onyeabor and Yellow Magic Orchestra to Basic Channel’s amniotic dub techno — into a sound that, while still anchored in dub reggae’s glorious walls of sound, is undeniably Pachyman’s own.

Pre-order / Pre-save Another Place here .

"In Love" follows lead single "Hard To Part," a skeletal drone workout that doubles as "a funky dub reggae love letter to Los Angeles" (Remezcla). KCRW called it "funky-spooky-cool" and put it at #2 on their Top 30 chart, adding: "ESG fans, take note."

"Pachyman is a bucket," Treble marveled. "It makes no difference if he’s grinding out that thick-smoke, Lee Perry type o’ scratch, or this new fascination that seems to be cowbell, one-note guitar riff, and the complete understanding that minimalism is not just reserved for ’90s Detroit techno."

Watch the video for “Hard To Part” video here .

Pachyman is preparing to take the alchemical, indelible sound of Another Place around the world. He just wrapped shows in New Zealand and Australia, and he’ll also be joining Darkside for select North American dates this spring.

Ahead of his imminent Europe and UK tour, Pachyman was also just announced as part of Indieplaza, a Record Store Day Festival to be held on the Rockefeller Center Plaza on Saturday, April 12. Other performers include The HivesScowlClipping., and Lifeguard — more details in poster below.

Full dates below — keep an eye out for more to be announced later this year.

(March 25, 2025) - Los Angeles singer-songwriter Harmony shares her new song “Where Strangers Go,” today. Alongside the new track, Harmony shares the Sophie Day and Manon Macasaet directed and edited video collaging imagery of Harmony wandering the streets of New York City with her lover mixed in with home video footage of Harmony as a kid. “Where Strangers Go” highlights Harmony’s poetic and earnest songwriting, which she became known for with her tenure in Girlpool, embellished with twinkling keys. “Where Strangers Go” provides a glimpse of what is to come from the Hollywood darling.

Speaking about the new song, Harmony shares, “‘Where Strangers Go’ is about the infinitely changing nature of life and trying to make peace with it.”

“Where Strangers Go” marks Harmony’s first offering since the release of her debut solo album Gossip, which includes the songs “No Romeo” and “Miss America.” The album showcases Harmony’s unique talent for pairing tongue-in-cheek lyrics with societal criticism and intricate pop production.

Born and raised in Hollywood, Harmony is a singer-songwriter who has made a name for herself with her poignant lyrics and delicate, evocative voice. As one half of canonical indie band Girlpool, Harmony’s songwriting has often been praised for its striking honesty and emotional clarity. Whether the musical production dons earth shattering pop sonics or straight-forward instrumentation, Harmony brings the same poetical fervor and olympic emotion to her lyrics, exploring the complexities of the human experience with depth and sensitivity.

Swimming Bell shares new single from forthcoming EP on Perpetual Doom

Swimming Bell Announces New EP, Somnia, Produced by Rob Schnapf

An underwater dreamworld of floating melodies and percussion-driven soundscapes

STREAM: "Meet My Shadow" -
Streaming Services

Swimming Bell, the project of Katie Schottland, returns with Somnia, a mesmerizing five-song EP produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Kurt Vile, Cat Power). Set for release on May 16 via Perpetual Doom, Somnia invites listeners into an ethereal sonic realm - an underwater dreamworld where melodies drift effortlessly and rhythms pulse like ocean currents.

Schottland, now based in LA, envisioned Somnia as an escape from the weight of reality. Against the backdrop of an increasingly tense world, she sought to create a space where listeners could feel suspended - floating between wakefulness and dreams. Collaborating with Schnapf, she embraced a more percussive approach, allowing textures and rhythms to guide the listener through shimmering soundscapes. Each track unfolds like a dream - buoyant, weightless, yet deeply immersive.

"I wanted this EP to feel like sinking into water, where everything is softened and suspended," says Schottland. "Given all the stress and tension in the world, I wanted to make a feeling of escape - something hypnotic and transportive. Rob and I explored percussive layers in a way that felt both grounding and dreamy, creating movement within."

With its captivating blend of organic instrumentation and airy production, Somnia marks a new chapter for Swimming Bell, further establishing Schottland as a singular voice in modern indie-folk.

Schottland offers some additional context for the EP's first single, "Meet My Shadow":

"With this song, I wanted to strip things down and focus on the feel - letting the groove take the lead and allowing the melody to float within it."

Jahnah Camille Announces New EP & Shares "what do you do?" Video

JAHNAH CAMILLE

ANNOUNCES NEW EP & SHARES LEAD SINGLE

“WHAT DO YOU DO?”

LISTEN | WATCH

MY SUNNY OATH! OUT JUNE 13TH VIA WINSPEAR

SUMMER TOUR WITH BLONDSHELL

Jahnah Camille by Elizabeth Marsh

Early Praise for Jahnah Camille:

“more like a peer than an opener; she’s setting the stage for some major growth” - Consequence

“bedroom-pop that’s as lyrically intimate as the genre title suggests” - FLOOD Magazine

“lovelorn, finely-tuned indie-pop that tugs at the heartstrings” - Clash

Birmingham songwriter Jahnah Camille has announced her EP and shared lead single “what do you do?,” a headturning statement of intent packed with memorable hooks and a vocal performance that sets the 20-year-old singer apart from her contemporaries. "I wrote this while trying to understand the feeling of losing control,” she shares, “I was paralyzed by a need to control how other people saw me and needed to write about it." In today’s feature, Alt Press said she “collages alt-rock, grunge, and shoegaze into swirling noise.”

Her second EP for label home Winspear (Slow Pulp, Barrie, Wishy), My sunny oath! is due out June 13th. The release comes on the heels of a run of tour dates with Blondshell, and previous shows supporting TOPS, Soccer Mommy, and Clairo after the success of her 2024 EP i tried to freeze light, but only remember a girl, which established Jahnah as one of the most promising new voices in indie music.

Recorded with producer Alex Farrar (Wednesday, Indigo De Souza, MJ Lenderman), the new EP is set in the pressure cooker of fresh adulthood, a defiant collection of alt-rock, lo-fi grit, and sardonic grunge that channels Jahnah’s era-agnostic songwriting influences, from The Sundays and Liz Phair to Minnie Riperton and Japanese Breakfast. Watch the video for “what do you do?” below.

WATCH “WHAT DO YOU DO?” OFFICIAL VIDEO

For Jahnah Camille, there was never a backup plan. Overhearing her father’s guitar lessons, she first picked up the instrument at four years old, and by age ten was writing her own songs. Opportunities to open for artists like Clairo and Soccer Mommy led to Jahnah’s burgeoning status as a keenly self-examining indie rocker in the Birmingham scene, otherwise saturated with punk and hardcore bands, with whom she played many of her early DIY shows.

“The first year after I graduated high school was kind of horrifying,” says Jahnah. “I had just basically broken up with most of my band. I wasn't going to college. I was seeing how everyone else that I had known growing up, their lives were changing. I knew that whatever happened in my life, it wasn't going to be that, and there wasn't really any proof that things were going in a positive direction.”

Throughout her life, supportive coincidences have pushed Jahnah’s creative tenacity. Her mother encouraged an elementary-aged Jahnah to perform for their apartment’s maintenance man, who then gifted her a red Gibson SG and amplifier. At a hippie kids camp, she met a mentor who helped to champion her early crowdfunded recordings. These threads connect on EP opener “close to heaven,” which Jahnah began writing at age 15. The final edition merges past and present: snarling guitars carry over from her upbringing in Birmingham’s hardcore scene, while soft piano nods to a current obsession with Elliott Smith.

“My mom was always having me sing and play guitar for people,” says Jahnah. “I've always had people who believed in me, and I feel like I've internalized that. That's been really beautiful.”

Jahnah will hit the road this Summer opening up for Blondshell, kicking off in Solana Beach before heading through Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, SLC, Denver and ending at Dog Days Festival in Savannah.

QUINQUIS Shares New Track "Dec'h" || New Album 'eor' Out 5/9 On Mute

QUINQUIS SHARES NEW TRACK “DEC'H”

NEW ALBUM EOR OUT 5/9 ON MUTE

Today Breton producer Émilie Quinquis has shared the latest taste of what to expect from her forthcoming album with a new track “Dec’h”(pronounced – “Der”). eor (which means “anchor” in Breton), the new QUINQUIS album, will be released on vinyl, CD and digitally on May 9, 2025 via Mute.

eor weaves together tales of mermaids, inspired by time spent sailing from her home island of Ushant to faraway places. “Dec’h” (which means “yesterday” in Émilie’s native tongue) is full of bubbling arpeggios, as mermaid presences in the waves encourage the protagonist to lose their black cloud and dance forever, after they said they’d never dance again.

In the accompanying video, directed by Vanessa Le Reste, Émilie is encouraged by a troupe of drag queens, who sashay onto Ushant in a flurry of neon like modern-day sirens, to embrace the glamour of lipgloss, feathers and sequins and join them.

Watch the video for “Dec’h” HERE.

The director, Vanessa Le Rest, explains, “The video for Dec'h is a modern fable. Through the art of Drag, we see our protagonist’s visual and emotional journey from grey to colour, from isolation to sisterhood, celebrating resilience, and the transformative power of art. In the video, inspired by Jacques Demy's Peau d'Âne, and the frozen poses of 70s photo stories, the Drag Queens arrive on the wild, timeless and isolated island of Ushant to bring an explosion of colour and life to our heroine, allowing her to become the strong, luminous woman we see at the finale.”

Émilie lives on Ushant Island, a landmass of six square miles off the coast of Brittany. Having learned to sail solo three years ago, a necessary act, she felt, to get home to the island and leave again on her terms, she kept going. She crossed the Irish Sea, circled the Scottish islands and Faroes, experienced the vulnerability and power of living in the elements. She kept imagining what could be in the waves around her, what visceral figures could have been forgotten by folklore, and how, with her instruments in tow, she could help bring these mermaid presences to the surface, hold them up for air.

The result is an album in which music provides succour among the shudders and swells. It shows QUINQUIS as an exceptional producer, and an extraordinary singer, musician and songwriter, creating tracks which ripple and flow, that torrent and break, full of propulsive visions and startling stories of the sea.

eor came to life through her modular synthesizers. Emilie says: "I love how electronic music can connect or create a dialogue between my body and somebody else's body. You can really go to unknown territories with its sounds and make people wish to listen to them again, to try to understand them, like when you're learning a language.” The album was co-produced alongside Gareth Jones (Sunroof, Depeche Mode, Liars, Einstürzende Neubauten).

eor sees the producer bringing stories that could exist in the seas around Brittany to life. Thinking of herself at night on the sea, and the shapes she saw in the water, she kept coming back to imagining mermaids in folklore, and wanted to reshape that figure for the 21st century. “I wanted to think about the essence of a mermaid – the desire to encounter beauty that makes you want to lose yourself completely, to discover someone so enchanting that you would follow her into the sea, even if that would kill you.”

“We don’t hear many stories about mermaids falling in love with mermaids, or sailors falling in love with sailors”, she says. “I wanted to access these feelings, and these stories in a way that felt powerful, that felt right for these times.”

eor plunges into the watery cores of who we are and who we were, and carries us, powerfully, within its currents. It finds pulsing new ways to express the presences and emotions we encounter as we sail through our lives' raging seas. QUINQUIS shows brilliantly how music can anchor us when we're longing for the past, and propelling ourselves into unknown futures, her energy moving us, guiding us, all together.

eor is out on vinyl, CD and digitally via Mute on 9 May 2025 – Pre-order HERE.

“Dec’h” follows recent singles “Inkanuko” (featuring labelmate Desire Marea, in what must surely be the first track to feature both Zulu and Breton languages), and “Morwreg.”

Helmed by Black and Cherokee composer and multi-instrumentalist Takiaya Reed, Divide and Dissolve will release their new album, Insatiable, on April 18 via Bella Union. The 10 track album runs the gamut of doom metal - from the ear-splitting depths of lead single “Monolithic”, to contemplative, softer moments on the aptly titled song Grief, released today. Like all of Divide and Dissolve’s music, Insatiable is almost entirely instrumental. While the album’s sheer grandiosity represents an evolution in Divide and Dissolve's sound, it also marks the very first time that Takiaya has ever lent vocals to a D//D song. On “Grief” her distorted voice echoes atop a vibrating bass tone, repeating the lyrics: “I don't know what I'm supposed to do/ I'm so lonely without you.” Takiaya explains, “The voice is such a mysterious  instrument. This album feels different, and I wanted to honour that”.

Video director Sepi Mashiahof shares, “The music video for “Grief” is an ode to the feelings of empowerment, resistance, and sadness that Divide and Dissolve weaves into our bodies. It’s an expressionist diary made up of dissonant and revelatory memories. Grief eclipses everything around us, innocuously lingering in the functional movements of our daily lives, then aggressively literal in the reflective silence behind our eyes. Grief is inherent to our existence, knowing that a better world exists for all of us and its potential is boundless, yet we’re made to suffer the atrocities of greed and exploitation instead. We can honor Grief as a passage of life, but we must resist the forces that impose it as a numbness to injustice.”

The album title Insatiable, came to Takiaya in a dream. She had a vision of a better world, one that gelled seamlessly with the optimism of her take on heavy music: “I saw and have felt the impact of people committing great acts of harm, causing pain in a never ending cycle. I have also seen and felt the strength and power of people committing great acts of love,” she says. For Takiaya, this is what it means to be “insatiable”; it’s the way we choose either a path of destruction or one of compassion, and experience it to its fullest. “It’s an album about love, and it feels important to experience this, now more than ever.”

Divide and Dissolve's music is an acknowledgement of the dispossession that occurs due to colonial violence, it honours ancestors, opposes white supremacy and calls for indigenous sovereignty. Already legends on the international doom metal scene, the new album is an evolution of sound and intricacy. Strapped with thunderstorms of crashing cymbals, crunchy feedback, stomach-churning riffs and neo-classical inflections, the new collection delves into the idea of freedom through impermanence and destruction vs compassion, an urgent call to imagine a better world before it’s too late. Listen to it, digest it, and become insatiable.

COSEY FANNI TUTTI ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF A NEW SOLO ALBUM, 2t2

COSEY FANNI TUTTIANNOUNCES DETAILS OF A NEW SOLO ALBUM,  2t2
OUT 13 JUNE VIA CONSPIRACY INTERNATIONAL
LISTEN TO THE FIRST TRACK  HERE

Cosey Fanni Tutti has announced details of a new album,  2t2 , set for release on the artist’s own imprint, Conspiracy International, on 13 June 2025 on vinyl, CD, and digitally (including Dolby Atmos / Spatial Audio).
Listen to the first track ‘Stound’  HERE
Composed, performed and produced by Cosey Fanni Tutti, the 9-track album moves between propulsive beat constructions and expansive electronic explorations, continuing themes from 2019’s acclaimed album TUTTI. It is a personal reflection; a sonic realisation of her life, drawing on her powerful inner resolve and expressing it through music.
The album finds Cosey making sense of some very tough years, dealing with personal bereavements alongside swingeing world events that have impacted us all. Centring on her own strength and self will, the album’s two distinct sides – one rhythmic, one more meditative – are connected by an overwhelmingly positive mood.
She explains, My overtone chanting on the track ‘Stound’ was part of that, tapping into the inner self, to the core of your being, emotionally, physically, allowing the sounds to permeate and soothe as well as create a sense of power, resistance and resilience to what we face.”
Even in the more melancholic moments, there’s a lightness that she explains is an “acknowledgement that it’s alright to be sad, that’s part of life, but there is so much joy too in our memories of people we lose and in the moments we share with each other. Joy is our resistance.”
There are also threads from her most recent projects running through 2t2. Her latest book RE-SISTERS and the score she wrote for Caroline Catz’s film Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and Legendary Tapes are acknowledged, most directly on ‘Threnody’ which is dedicated to Delia Derbyshire and Andy Christian, an artist friend of Delia’s. He sent Cosey an abstract drawing of the same name, created one night from an improvised evening where he drew while Derbyshire intoned and sang softly as she looked at the drawings, as if reading a score expressing how they made her feel.
Cosey’s process and the different strands that make up her work form a totality of vision. She goes on to say, “Once you get creating and listening, weaving, collaging sound it’s a wonderfully fulfilling feeling that takes you both out of yourself at the same time as essentially deep within.”
The artwork reflects this idea that the album is a “sound cameo”, reflecting the light within the music, and the buzz of life that exists within all of Cosey’s work.
Musician, artist and author Cosey Fanni Tutti has continually challenged boundaries and conventions through her work. As a founding member of the hugely influential avant-garde band Throbbing Gristle, one half of electronic pioneers Chris and Cosey, and as an artist channelling her experience in pornographic modelling and striptease, her work on the margins has reshaped the mainstream.
Her first solo album, Time To Tell (1983) was followed by 2019’s Tutti and 2022’s Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes. Her debut book, the Penderyn Music Book Prize shortlisted Art Sex Music, was published in 2017, followed by RE-SISTERS in 2022 (both Faber), which will soon get a Spanish edition.
