SAD13 Shares New Song/Video For "Oops...!"
SAD13 SHARES NEW SONG/VIDEO FOR “OOPS...!” Haunted Painting out 9/25 on Wax Nine
(Photo Credit: Natalie Piserchio)Early praise for Sad13 + Haunted Painting:"a synth-pop earworm for your isolated summer...this one’s a glittery affair, with a retro-pop feel that compliments her velvety vocals." - Rolling Stone (Song You Need To Know) “the first taste sounds like a fizzy indie-pop gem upon initial listen; dig in deeper, however, and revel in the whirring production tidbits that coalesce around the maximalist hook." - Billboard "With the album inspired by everything from ’80s pop to PC Music-style shattered electronics, “Ghost (Of A Good Time)” seems like an apt introduction to Haunted Painting. It’s bright, a bit corroded, chirpy, but a little eerie." - Stereogum Sadie Dupuis announced her self-produced sophomore solo album as Sad13 a few weeks ago, sharing its lead single “Ghost (Of A Good Time.)” Now she releases another single off of the record, the syncopated and swaggering “Oops...!” Listen to the song and watch its Kimber-Lee Alston-directed video HERE and read more about it below from Dupuis:
“We recorded "Oops...!" at New Monkey, which was Elliott Smith’s studio. This one has a magic drum sound - thanks entirely to engineer Sarah Tudzin (of Illuminati Hotties notoriety), and Zoë Brecher's impeccable playing. Just before writing it, on tour with CHVRCHES, a venue employee became physically and verbally violent with one of my Speedy Ortiz bandmates. He directed his fake apology at me instead of the person he harmed, presumably because I am smaller and present feminine. My vengeance complex kicked in and I got a scary adrenaline high making sure this unsafe person was removed from the show. While I'm glad I have protective instincts, I wrote the song to process ways in which I've used people's assumptions about me and my body to wield my own version of toxic masculinity. Kimber-Lee Alston, who directed remotely via Zoom, turned this story and song into an allegory about a 1950s prom queen vampire who lures in her bad boy victims with delicious, blood-filled treats.”Sadie Dupuis is one of the most prolific creators, let alone songwriters, in the independent space. Between Speedy Ortiz and Sad13 releases, she has miraculously found time to co-feature on a track with Lizzo, release a critically acclaimed poetry book, run her own record label, establish a poetry journal, co-curate a full-length and star-studded tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger, and find time to work with No Music for ICE, the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers, in addition to her unwavering advocacy for countless other issues. But, processing some previously unresolved grief, she felt unable to create new music.
Haunted Painting, Sad13’s self-produced sophomore album and first for Dupuis’ label Wax Nine (Melkbelly, Johanna Warren), marks Dupuis’ return to artmaking after reconciling with a delayed processing of grief. Recorded at a variety of studios across the U.S., Haunted Painting was made exclusively with women engineers, and features vocal contributions from Helado Negro’s Roberto Lange, Deerhoof’s Satomi Matsuzaki, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, and Pile’s Rick Maguire. On this album, Sad13 weaves timely societal critiques into rushing hooks and whip-smart wordplay that’s all still a blast, making for one of the most essential releases you’ll hear all year. Sad13 previously announced a small-batch food release, a ghost pepper hot sauce called Haunted Peppers in collaboration with Dragon’s Blood Elixir in Connecticut, which makes artisan sauces focused on local and organic farmer's market produce. Now, she announces another collab: Haunted Breakfast. This is an assam/lapsang souchong black tea blend from Philly's Craft Tea, again focused on the farmers from which the teas were harvested. All Sad13 and Speedy Ortiz merch has shifted recently towards small quantities of sustainable products, with any soft merch printed on recycled materials in limited to-order runs for inclusivity purposes and to avoid excess stock. “Lookin’ For A Leader 2020”
Leaders walk among usand I hope they hear our call.Maybe it’s a womanor a black man after all.Lookin’ for a leaderto bring our country home, reunite the red white and bluebefore it turns to stone.
Lookin’ for somebodyWith the strength to take it on;keep us safe togetherand make this country strong.Walkin’ among our peopleThere’s someone to lead us on;lead a rainbow of colorsin a broken world gone wrong.
Yeah, we had Barack Obamaand we really need him now.The man who stood behind himhas to take his place somehow.America has a leaderbuilding walls around our house. He don’t know black lives matterand we got to vote him out.
We got our election, but corruption has a chanceWe got to have a big winto regain confidence.America is beautifulbut she has an ugly side. We’re lookin’ for a leaderin this country far and wide.
Just like his big new fence, this president’s goin’ down.America’s movin’ forward. You can feel it in every town.Scared of his own shadow, building walls around our house,he’s hidin’ in his bunker;something else to lie about.
We don’t need a leaderbuilding walls around our housewho don’t know black lives matterand it’s time to vote him out! We’re lookin’ for a leaderwith The Great Spirit on his side;lookin’ for a leaderin this country far and wide.Lookin’ for a leaderwith The Great Spirit on his side.

HINDS Share Cover of The Clash's "Spanish Bombs"

The Prettiest Curse out now on Mom + Pop

Praise for Hinds + A Prettiest Curse:
"a capitulation to the bright commerciality their music has harbored...fun and rebellious, like a glitter bomb detonated in a stuffy conference room." - The New Yorker
"Hinds got its start playing sharp, driving rock and roll and its sound only gets more polished and wider ranging on its third album, The Prettiest Curse...these songs have purpose and playfulness and also a real undercurrent of righteous indignation. It's a great record." - NPR Music
"The third album from these cool Spanish garage-rock primitivists adds a sweet sun-bleached studio haze to their sound, making for spacey songs that never lack for sass, bite, or beauty." - Rolling Stone
"the Spanish garage rockers swing for the fences with a big, arena-friendly new sound." - Pitchfork
"Hinds always bring sweeping joy to their jangly rock music, and their latest album, The Prettiest Curse, is no exception.” - The Wall Street Journal Magazine
"As a project, one that truly blooms from its floor-to-ceiling sound, it is also Hinds’ most realized music yet." - NYLON
“their best work to date." - Paste Magazine (8.5/10)
“the Madrid quartet take a turn towards a cleaner garage pop sound...the tightest LP from the band yet." - Consequence of Sound
"Without a doubt, The Prettiest Curse is some of Hinds’ most pop-leaning work...the punk attitude that initially made fans fall in love with the band is still very much there, and it’s heard in the cool vocal delivery and the explosive, glimmering guitars." - Billboard
Beloved Madrid band Hinds released their glorious beast of a third album, The Prettiest Curse, last month on Mom + Pop to critical acclaim from the likes of The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal Magazine, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The FADER, NYLON, and many more. Today the band shares more new music: a cover of The Clash’s “Spanish Bombs.” Check it out now HERE and read about the band’s inspiration behind covering the track below.
“we've always loved doing covers. maybe 'cause it's the way we started, or maybe because there are so many good songs in the world already that we wish we had written! and we really enjoy hindsifying them heheh. the clash were my mom's forevers favourite band and ade's parents also, so it is always beautiful to connect generations through music.
“as spaniards, we don’t usually get shout outs in songs, like “new york” or “london”, so the clash writing a song about our civil war made us feel honoured. we recorded it the last day of studio, pretty much live, while recording our third album.”
LISTEN/WATCH:“Riding Solo” | "Good Bad Times” “Come Back And Love Me ” | “Just Like Kids (Miau)” | “Burn”
On The Prettiest Curse, Hinds take a quantum leap forward as a band and shrug off any remaining lo-fi accusations, finally harnessing the full extent of their pop prowess and unleashing songs which sound bigger, bolder, and more complex than anything they have done before, while still remaining true to their girl-gang, garage rock roots. “We have this incredible job, but it’s really transformed the way we live,” says Carlotta Cosials, explaining the album title. “We know we’re not going to stop, so we’ve decided to embrace it—to see this curse as something pretty.” Featuring songs performed in Hinds’ native tongue for the first time, The Prettiest Curse was produced by Jennifer Decilveo and is positively bursting with life, finding Hinds at their very best yet. Purchase, stream and download the album now HERE.
Hinds is: Carlotta Cosials (vocals, guitar), Ana Perrote (vocals, guitar), Ade Martin (bass), Amber Grimbergen (drums)

Roísín Murphy Announces New Album 'Roísín Machine' + Shares New Track "Something More"
RÓISÍN MURPHY ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM RÓISÍN MACHINE FOR SEPTEMBER 25TH (Skint/BMG)
SHARES NEW SINGLE “SOMETHING MORE”
STREAM HERE
Album artwork
Today Róisín Murphy shares full details of her highly anticipated new album, the fabulously titled Róisín Machine. Her first full length project since 2015’s Mercury Prize-nominated Hairless Toys and 2016’s equally revered Take Her Up To Monto will be released on September 25th via Skint / BMG.
Róisín Machine is the culmination of a rich, decades-long partnership between Murphy and one of her most trusted collaborators Crooked Man aka DJ Parrot. Although packed to the rafters with masterclass singles, including “Simulation,” “Jealousy,” “Incapable,” Narcissus,” and “Murphy’s Law,” it is also an ingeniously and seamlessly edited listening experience, designed to be listened to in one uninterrupted sitting, from start to dazzling finish.
The glorious reign of as British music’s most unpredictable, indefatigable High Priestess of cool continues unabated with her new single “Something More,” which enters stage left; tear-streaked, melancholy and stripped right back to the core of its soul. It’s a hands in the air, end of the night, come-together anthem and Murphy’s voice has never sounded more commanding, more rich and soulful - it’s both playful and mature.
LISTEN TO “SOMETHING MORE” HERE
Murphy’s breath-taking command of emotion is in full force on the song, she explains; ” I interpreted it as a swan-song to how we once lived, there’s plenty of bravado in the lyrics and the character is a kind of antihero but the indefinable yearning and the feeling of arriving at a point of emptiness is universal right now!”
Written by NYC songstress Amy Douglas, it came about like everything in Murphy’s world, quite naturally. “We met last year at a very interesting talk event in london about the psychology and science of Dub. We hit it off immediately, I’m afraid we may have heckled the speakers, who happened to have among them Andrew Weatherall!
I asked her to write me a song about never being full or satisfied, exponential need. She sent a very basic but brilliant demo very soon after, just her singing and playing a piano. The challenge then is to get the music-direction right, the arrangement and the voicing.
Our first version was way more straight ahead pop, funky, very camp. It seemed right when we began before lockdown but as a new reality descended upon the world we got tired of its one and only dimension. So when this slow-burn, deep, soulful, groove emerged out of the Crooked remixes, I decided to change tack. It seemed perfect, the perfect arrangement for the song and also perfect for the moment. We’re in darker ages now and this feels like morning, the sun’s coming up and it’s the last record of a very, very, good night. We need space for ‘mood’ and the ‘uncanny’ right now.”
From the intoxicating disco-funk of “Incapable,” to the quintessential “Narcissus,” which crystallised New-Disco and established a high watermark for the genre, to “Murphy’s Law,” a 70s inflected stomper, Róisín Machine offers up everything you could ask for on an exquisite plate. Added to the familiar tunes are five new songs, including the Dalek-funk of “We Got Together” and the fantastical “Shellfish Mademoiselle.”
An album that works perfectly on the home sound system but also comes alive in a basement sweatbox, it impeccably sits alongside Murphy’s stellar canon of work released across 25 boundary pushing, trailblazing years, a career encompassing iconic music, directorial, art and fashion moments.

Gillian Welch Releases "Boots No. 2: The Lost Songs, Vol. 1" On Acony Records
GILLIAN WELCH RELEASES
BOOTS NO. 2: THE LOST SONGS, VOL. 1
ON ACONY RECORDS
READ INTERVIEW ABOUT BOOTS NO. 2 & NEW COVERS COLLECTION, ALL THE GOOD TIMES, VIA ROLLING STONE COUNTRY
BOOTS NO. 2: THE LOST SONGS VOL. 2 & 3 TO FOLLOW IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS
Today, Gillian Welch releases Boots No. 2: The Lost Songs, Vol. 1 via Acony Records, the independent record label she and partner David Rawlings founded in 2001. Vol. 1 is the first installation of a three-part collection which contains songs unearthed from a cache of home demos and reel-to-reel recordings. This remarkable 48 song collection, produced by David Rawlings, was recorded between the making of Time (The Revelator) and Soul Journey. Said the duo about the release, “We stashed these recordings away years ago. Their shortcomings, real or imagined, technical or compositional, no longer seem bothersome today. Hearing them now is like seeing snapshots that captured moments the more formal portraits missed. So here we are hurrying them for release before the next tornado blows the whole shoebox away.”
Boots No. 2: The Lost Songs, Vol. 1
is available digitally now here, with Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 following in the coming months.
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings both spoke to Rolling Stone about the collection, it’s inspiration, as well as their recently released cover collection, All The Good Times. In the interview Welch reveals: “Having all the tapes almost destroyed really makes you think. All of our masters were in the tape vaults at Woodland, and when the roof got peeled off like a sardine can and then it rained for four hours and then the ceilings all collapsed, basically everything we have was almost destroyed. … It made us think about our whole archive. It’s one thing to know in your mind that you have these tapes, and it’s another thing to run through the dark with them in your arms, rescuing them from destruction. Once we rescued them at great peril, you think, “Why did I rescue this?” And then you find yourself thinking, “Well, I guess because it means something.” Read the interview here.
“These songs disorient you in time because Gillian Welch blends past and present in a way that makes the past, present.” Jedediah Purdy writes in the album’s liner notes. “To listen through Boots 2 is to feel you have gotten thoroughly lost, and maybe drunk or worse, in a landscape of strangers. It is also to feel that, wandering through that landscape, you might actually never have left your house, and it might not matter whether you did or not, since you have become a stranger to yourself. It is like going through weeks when the sun refuses to shine, or maybe your body just refused to go out and meet it, because the sun had become hateful to you. Saying that it feels this way — which it does — risks making this music sound like a bummer. It is not. It is a trip. It is also a joy.” He further expounds, “by making art of an experience that, in life, is usually fraught with inarticulacy and bewilderment, these songs make obscurity vivid, strangeness intimate, dissolution into something solid and alive. Music like this makes broken existence fleetingly whole.”
Boots No. 2: The Lost Songs comes after 2016’s Boots No. 1: The Official Revival Bootleg, a double album of unreleased outtakes, alternate versions, and demos from the making of the seminal 1996 debut album. Pitchfork said of the initial collection, “witnessing gradual transformation can be revelatory, and several early takes lay bare the process of refining Gillian Welch into “Gillian Welch” with staggering clarity,” and NPR Music adds, “the whole thing serves as a tremendous reminder of how and why this partnership came to matter so much.”
Gillian Welch & David Rawlings recently released All The Good Times, a new album of ten acoustic covers recorded at home on a reel-to-reel. The album contains songs by Bob Dylan, John Prine, Elizabeth Cotten, and Norman Blake, as well as new arrangements of traditional songs. The album is available on all formats here.

Heartless Bastards share first single in 5 years:"Revolution" is out everywhere today

FIRST NEW MUSIC RELEASE IN FIVE YEARS
PROCEEDS FROM BANDCAMP SALES TO BENEFIT THE ACLU
Austin, Texas-based Heartless Bastards have teamed up with Spaceflight Records to release a digital single, “Revolution,” out everywhere today. The song has been exclusively available for download via Bandcamp since July 3, and a portion of all Bandcamp proceeds will continue to be donated to the ACLU in support of civil rights.
Lead vocalist, Erika Wennerstrom, explains the new single and says:
“Revolution is about self love. I think if people loved themselves more there wouldn’t be racism, bigotry, and classism. Some people are so worried that there is not enough pie to go around, and that lifting up others limits their own opportunity. There is mass misinformation and manipulation to peddle this narrative. Money, materialism, privileged access to better education are things people constantly measure themselves with. The need to feel better than someone in order to feel good about oneself is an age old insecurity. I think there’s fear there too. So many struggle to get ahead because they’re afraid of getting left behind. The planet really can’t sustain everyone having more. Everything is made to fall apart like cars, and $1100 cell phones. I think humanity needs to learn how to have less, and not play into the commercialism that constantly sends the message we lack things that we don’t really need.
Revolution is a mantra, and reminder to myself to avoid playing the game as much as I can. I don’t need this, and I don’t need that. I don’t need to compare myself to others. This marathon everybody is running is exhausting. There is so much true suffering in this world with a lack of food, shelter, and basic running water, and if you suffer depression and anxiety remind yourself of that, and try to possibly be of service to someone in need, and not even necessarily with writing a check, but with even something as simple as kind energy, and compassion. True connection. The more man attempts to look at the world from another man's perspective it becomes apparent how connected we all really are. Dave Chapelle said at a show years ago “Poverty is a state of mind.” That really stuck with me. I was in the Amazon several years ago, and it struck me how little people had materially, and children were running around and they all seemed so happy. Aside from the basic necessities of sustaining our lives I think giving and receiving love is really what we need the most. All the rest is just a bunch of noise."
Photo credit: Charlie PearceTaking the name "Heartless Bastards" from an incorrect answer on a multiple-choice trivia game (the question: what is the name of Tom Petty's backing band), Wennerstrom founded the band in 2003 in Cincinnati. It started as a recording project and evolved into a live band with a revolving cast of musicians, and they began playing regularly throughout the Midwest. When Patrick Carney of the Black Keys saw the band, he liked what he heard and passed along a copy of their demo to his label at the time, Fat Possum Records. Heartless Bastards signed with Fat Possum, releasing their first 3 albums, Stairs and Elevators (2005), All this Time (2006), and The Mountain (2009).
In 2007 Wennerstrom relocated to Austin, TX, and recorded The Mountain. A new touring lineup formed including David Colvin on drums and Jesse Ebaugh on bass, bringing the project in full circle as both Colvin and Ebaugh had played on the original Heartless Bastards demos 6 years earlier. Mark Nathan joined on guitar in 2009, and the band became a 4-piece. They signed to Partisan records and released 2 critically acclaimed records, Arrow (2012) and Restless Ones (2015).
After more than a decade fronting the band, Wennerstrom released the album Sweet Unknown under her own given name in 2018. “It was a deeply personal album and it just felt fitting to use my name. It kind of forced me to allow myself to be a little more exposed, and stand on my own two feet. I feel like I’ve grown so much creatively and personally through this process.”
Now some good news for fans of Heartless Bastards — which has released five critically- acclaimed albums since their 2003 inception, appeared on many late night television shows, and has drawn praise from Rolling Stone, Time, New York Times — in early 2020, Wennerstrom returned to the studio with producer Kevin Ratterman (Strand of Oaks, Jim James, White Reaper), and a new album is in the works.
Fans can also rest assured that what they’ve grown to love about Heartless Bastards is still front-and-center. Wennerstrom's trademark vocals that NPR so aptly calls “warm yet gritty, throaty yet sweet, gigantic, yet intimate” are that… times 10. And the bluesy, rock vibes that Relix describes as “smoky, late night [rock] that exists somewhere between Royal Trux and the Rolling Stones” has only gotten smokier and bluesier.

FIRST NEW MUSIC RELEASE IN FIVE YEARS
PROCEEDS FROM BANDCAMP SALES TO BENEFIT THE ACLU

“Rather than the fuzz fury that characterizes much of his collaborative efforts, Hum rests upon Johannes’ equally accomplished fingerpicking… that harks back to Nick Drake’s Pink Moon - and carries just as much emotional depth.” – Guitar World
“With songs like “If Morning Comes”, “Mermaid’s Scream” and the title track, Johannes forged a record that is equally as enlightening to his listeners as to his process making the record.” – American Songwriter

Click the above image or follow this link to watch the “If Morning Comes” video:https://americansongwriter.com/hum-alain-johannes-album-interview/ July 31, 2020 – SANTIAGO, Chile – Alain Johannes, who released his third solo album, Hum, today via Ipecac Recordings (https://lnkfi.re/AJHum), has debuted a video for the song “If Morning Comes” (https://americansongwriter.com/hum-alain-johannes-album-interview/) via American Songwriter.
“’If Morning Comes’ was one of the most cathartic for me during the making of Hum. Many difficult nights while I was ill those words were like my mantra,” explains Johannes of the song which encapsulates the personal nature of the 10-song album, a release written during a period of illness and mourning that found Johannes taking stock of his existence, and his future. The psychedelic video, which echoes the meditative quality of the song was directed by Liam Lynch. Johannes says of the clip: “My dear friend Liam Lynch created this intense world so visually stunning and resonant with the song. He’s the man!”
A series of eye-catching videos have been released in the lead-up to Hum’s arrival: “Hallowed Bones” (https://youtu.be/PF0MSlUcVOU), “Free” (https://youtu.be/dCHuLb5w3MQ) and the title track, “Hum” (https://youtu.be/n_9ua-IjRzk). The clips have celebrated the beauty of life and the world we inhabit.
Photo credit: Tom Bronowski Alain Johannes first came to international prominence with Eleven, a trio that featured Jack Irons (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and with Johannes’ beloved late wife, Natasha Shneider. Eleven released five albums between 1991 and 2003. Johannes and Shneider became sought out contributors, working with Chris Cornell on his celebrated 1999 solo debut, Euphoria Morning—which the couple co-wrote, co-produced, and toured in support of. They also lent their talents to Queens of the Stone Age’s chart-topping 2005 Lullabies To Paralyze and the subsequent two-year touring cycle that followed its release. Along the way, Alain either wrote, produced, or engineered projects for No Doubt, Mark Lanegan, Jimmy Eat World, Brody Dalle, and Arctic Monkeys, to name a few. Not to mention, he performed in PJ Harvey’s live band as well as Them Crooked Vultures where he shared stages worldwide with Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and John Paul Jones. A sought-after composer for film, television, and video games, he has penned music for HBO’s Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) as well as Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Breakpoint. Plus, Grohl enlisted him as part of the Sound City Players, co-writing and performing various cuts on the soundtrack for Sound City. Following Natasha’s passing, he unveiled his first solo effort, Spark, in 2010 before delivering the follow-up Fragments and Wholes, Vol. 1 three years later.

Ella Vos' second album Turbulence out now, shares "Dreaming, backwards" lyric video
ELLA VOS’ SECOND ALBUM TURBULENCE OUT NOWSHARES “DREAMING, BACKWARDS” LYRIC VIDEO
photo credit: Kate RentzJuly 31, 2020—
Turbulence
,
the second album from rising pop sensation Ella Vos, is out now—listen here. Vos recently discussed the album with NPR's Sarah McCammon on Weekend Edition Sunday—listen here. Today, she shares the lyric video for “Dreaming, backwards”—watch here.“Turbulence is an album about surviving and thriving through the ups and downs of life,” Vos says. “It was written in the wake of my divorce, while I was suffering from severe chronic depression as well as still waiting to go into remission from lymphoma. It’s been a turbulent couple years to say the least, and it seems like each obstacle is trying to teach me the same thing: to live in this moment, to love myself without guilt, and to embrace change. This album has moments of honest realization, personal affirmations, admission of my weaknesses, and finding freedom. It’s far from a breakup album—it’s an album of renewal.”“Dreaming, backwards” follows “
State of Emotion
,” “
Mistakes, they catch up
”—cowritten with frequent Frank Ocean and Solange collaborator John Carroll Kirby—“
Burning Bridges
” and the album’s title track, “
Turbulence
,” which Idolator called “an uplifting and deeply relatable anthem about rolling with the punches.”In 2019, Vos released the
Watch and Wait
EP, an exploration of her 2018 diagnosis with cancer through a deeply personal lens. The project received critical acclaim from
The New York Times
, Uproxx, who called it “cathartic and confessional,” Earmilk, who remarked, “[Vos] pours her life and soul into this latest, and it’s breathtaking,” and more. Vos, now in recovery, went on to play a series of music festivals and embarked on a full headline tour.Acclaimed for her dreamy soundscapes and songwriting that explores modern women’s lives in their totality, Vos’ 2017 debut album Words I Never Said—an inquiry into the postpartum depression she experienced after the birth of her son—was praised by the likes of Rolling Stone, HuffPost, Nylon, Coveteur, Dujour, MILK and Earmilk. Vos has consistently sold out shows across North America. With more than 250 million streams to date, Ella Vos’ songs have soundtracked ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” MTV’s “Catfish,” E!’s “Life of Kylie” and The CW’s “The Originals.”ELLA VOS—TURBULENCE

“An extraordinary work, creating beauty from its sadness.” – 4/5 The Independent
“A song may move around, expand, come apart in its limbs and joints and skin to sink back into the room space, where strings are vibrating, snares rattling.” - David Toop on On&On
Daniel Blumberg has shared a new video for “On&On&On&On&On,” the penultimate track from new album On&On . It is the final rendition of the ever-evolving title song which appears four times across the arc of the record, each time cast in a new light. The self-directed video is the second in a series of films depicting Blumberg endlessly circling a London roundabout on his motorcycle and is this time shot at night.
Watch the video to “On&On&On&On&On,” directed by Blumberg, here.

Released today on Mute, the new album follows 2018’s debut Minus and is a consolidation of the deconstructed song aesthetic Blumberg has been developing. It finds him operating at the intersection between conventional song structures and free improvisation and incorporates recurring themes, shapeshifting motifs, and at times dissolves the boundaries between songs altogether. It is accompanied by an essay written by the author David Toop, which is available to read here.
Stream and purchase On&On here.
On&On was born out of live sessions with the same core group of players as Minus: Daniel Blumberg (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Ute Kanngiesser (cello), Billy Steiger (violin), Tom Wheatley (double bass) and Jim White (drums), with the addition of electronic maverick Elvin Brandhi (vocals). As such, it represents a deepening of relationships and distillation of techniques for this tight-knit group of free-playing musicians who are loosely based around Café OTO.
The album was recorded by Peter Walsh (Scott Walker), who captures the group’s extraordinary performances – encompassing the full expressive range of their instruments from softly-bowed melodies and tender vocal harmonies to rough-hewn scrapes, plucks and rattles – while the sound of the room and the outside world spill naturally into the sound field.
It has also been announced that the film The World To Come (directed by Mona Fastvold), featuring an original score composed by Blumberg, will premiere in competition at the 77th Venice International Film Festival from September 2-12.
Blumberg currently has a large scale drawing on display at Kunsthal Rotterdam as part of the “Black Album / White Cube” exhibition which is running until January 10. The exhibition also includes works by Mark Leckey, Albert Oehlen, Kim Gordon and Wolfgang Tillmans, amongst others.

RECENT QUOTES
“underlines his experimental drives, his desire to push through sound barriers.” - 4/5 Q magazine
“The album is built around the piece ‘On&On’, which is split over four tracks scattered through the LP, gaining an additional ‘…&On’ each time, like a rolling stone made of avant-garde music and sadness” – 8/10 Uncut
“The method of the record’s execution is as important as the idea itself, with Blumberg’s core band embracing free-playing live sessions as an exercise of trust and technique, testing the limbs of their instruments and seeing how far they can bend them before they succumb and break.” - 8/10 Loud & Quiet

"A modern masterpiece" - 5/5 The Times (on Minus)
"A statement of intent from an artist who has found his voice" - The Quietus (on Minus)
“Traces lines between drawing and improvised music” - The Wire
“One of London’s most exciting emerging artists” - Hans Ulrich Obrist
