My new book, out this very week, is about an arranged marriage in modern times. I love arranged marriage books, but they’re usually historicals, right? But I think I’d make a great marriage broker, personally. (Any takers?) And if for some reason, I found myself single, I think having a friend pick out a new honey would be just the thing. Take out the worry and anxiety and “Does he really like me?” and “Will he call?” and bam! Just go straight to the vows and the fluffy white dress.
The friend of choice would be really, really important. My mother, for example, could not be trusted to fix me up with anyone. (She’s still waiting to see if McIrish and I will work out, 22 years and two children after the fact.) Recently, though, I asked her, just as a mental exercise, which man she’d pick out for me.
“How about John X?” she suggested (the names have been changed to protect the innocent).
“That man-whore? Mom! Come on.”
“Oh. Well, what about John Y?”
“Gay.”
“Really? Damn. You would’ve had beautiful children.”
“I’m 48, Mom.”
“Don’t tell me how old you are. I’m your mother. I know. What about John Z?”
“Also gay.”
“You’re kidding! Well, then, I guess you’ll have to go to the convent.”
I have a lot more faith in my friends. Jill Shalvis, I’m sure, would find me someone great.
In THE PERFECT MATCH, my heroine’s grandmother hooks Honor up with Tom, a math teacher (or something) who may be good-looking and kind, not that the grandmother really knows. There’s a tragedy in Tom’s life, and he needs a wife pronto. And Honor’s not getting any younger. She just proposed to Brogan, her longtime love interest and was turned down (ouch), and a few weeks later, learns that Brogan and her best friend are engaged (ouch again).
Tom Barlow is single. He’s goodhearted. He’s a blue-collar Brit who teaches college and boxes on the side. And there’s something about him that Honor just can’t ignore.
