Hi Shawn, looks like I've not been around for a while. This comment came 4 months ago. How time flies. Makes me wonder what I've been doing all this time.
I'm working on a new fantasy series. It stated as one book but my beta readers kept asking questions. I get inspired and come up with more plot.
The over all story is loosely plotted. the first three book plots are more compete. And I writing the first book.

I planned My Haunted Bed and Breakfast to be humorous with some intense moments in it. Interesting, that you see it the other way around.
Alfred Hitchcock was the "Master of Suspense." But he also added humor to relieve his audience of the stress before he increased the suspense.
I take his advice to heart. When I write something serious or sad, my next chapter will lighten the story before I increase the drama.

I love the outdoors. I'd rather be outdoors than be inside. But I also love to write. I keep my mornings clear, so I can write. After lunch, I either head outside on my own or plan something with a friend. I make a point to exercise every afternoon. If not outside, then at the gym.
Unfortunately, I also have to do all the house work and run errands, which I plan around my afternoon play time.

Everyday noice doesn't usually bother me. But men overhead tearing my roof apart and then replacing it with loud machinery, gets to me.
My apartment building has new owners and have a large remodeling plan in the works. When it get too noisy for me, I leave.
With no distractions from home, I'm getting a lot of work done.

I used to sit and start writing and let the idea flow. But it would take several rewrites before I found the story. Then I read John Truby's book, The Anatomy of Story. He taught me how to plan characters and plot. I also refer to the Hero's Journey to plot my hero or heroine's journey.
Now I write the book once and then clean it up.

My all time favorite how-to-write book is The Anatomy of Story by John Truby. I review his book for every novel.
There is so much to consider when creating character. It's been easer since I discovered his book.
Example: I didn't fully understand motivation or character growth. I do now thanks to Truby.
I suppose I do better with females characters since I am female. ;0)

Every fiction hero is a superhero because of all they have to overcome in the story to find themselves and reach their goal.
But writing something like in the movies or graphic novels? No, there is so much action and fighting. I don't know how to write a good fight scene. Although, I'm sure there are books to teach me how.
My stories are characters driven not action driven.
But I do love a good action movie.

I like to read other genres besides fantasy and science fiction, but so far I only write fantasy and science fiction.
Originally, I planned to only write fantasy. As much as I like science, I'm no scientist. I didn't want to do the research for a science fiction book.
I like fantasy because I can make up my own rules and as long as I stay within those rules I'm good.
So what was the first book I published? A science fiction trilogy, People of Akiane. I did the best I could on the research. Thankfully, I am blessed with friends who are scientists and who were willing to correct my science. But there came a point when they said, "It's make believe, do what you want." So, I did.
I thought the trilogy would be the last. I moved on to fantasy and a six book series called Krunkie and the Last Dragon Eggs.
Guess what? I have another science fiction story percolating in my brain.

Right now, I'm reading "The Lost Island."
Next, I'll be reading "And Other Thing," then "The Nature of a Pirate."

I don't.
I forget about it and go do something fun. Or I work on something completely different. I let my brain relax and let the idea come to me when it wants. It never takes long for writer's block to evaporate.
The more you stress over it the more difficult it becomes.

Best thing about writing is being the god of my worlds and creating new characters. ;0)
My mission is to entertain you. To take you out of this world and put you in an adventure in another world. Enjoy the ride.

I am working on the third book, Jessica's Mission, in my People of Akiane Trilogy.
My next project will be the Destiny Series.
It takes more than a village to create a god, it takes a Destiny.

Anything can stick in my brain and sit there and churn, while it collects other ideas that bond together and form into a plot.
In this day and age, when someone has time to kill, they use their cell phone to entertain them. I find paper and pen and write. Whatever story or character that pops into my head first, that’s the one I work on. When I get home I put it in the computer.
My brain is rarely silent. There’s so much going on in there. I’m rarely alone, I’m rarely bored and I’m quite often off on some adventure.

Minnesota winter inspired People of Akiane Trilogy. I'm originally from Southern Louisiana winters there are very different from Minnesota winters.
During Louisiana winters it rains and rains and yes, it rains. It might reach 32F for a day or two. In February, it snows once every ten years.
In Minnesota, it’s not unusual to reach -30F with wind chill of -60F for two weeks at a time. It not unusual to have 90 inches of snow per winter season.
On my world, the planet Akiane is in the Pegasus Constellation. Winter lasts for six years. It’s so cold that expect for a small stretch of water along the equator, the ocean surface around the world freezes. The colony lives in a habitat. They dress in winter fur suites and eat fish that helps them endure the extreme cold of six years of winter.
My alien planet and Earth have been out of contact with each other for 300 years. Lt. Jessica M. Hewitt has been ordered to reunite the two worlds. But first, she must deal with her own insecurities and her belief in God.
