Hi, and thanks for stopping by. By way of introduction: I'm a full-time, bestselling thriller novelist and creator of Dylan Hunter: the thriller world's "new face of justice."

All my life — since I was a little kid during the Fifties and Sixties, watching “The Lone Ranger” and Zorro on TV and reading Batman comics — I have been passionate about the principle of justice. When I began to write nonfiction in my teens, that was the underlying principle in everything I wrote. It remained the theme of my work throughout my later career as an award-winning essayist, investigative journalist, reviewer, blogger, editor, and nonfiction author of books on crime.

Now it's the central theme of my fiction-writing, too.

It involves having a dialogue with your keyboard -- a conversation, as if you are talking to another "self." (And you are: It's your subconscious.) Something like this: "Hi. What's up today? How's it going?" "Mmm. Not so great. I'm blocked." "Oh? What seems to be the problem?" "It has to do with the relationship between the hero and the heroine. I can't seem to get it to go anywhere." "Why not? They're madly in love." "Yeah. I suppose."
"You SUPPOSE? You have doubts?" "Not so much about her. But about him. I'm not sure he's madly in love." "Why not? He getting cold feet?" "It's not that. I just don't think he feels what she feels." "Ah. And he feels guilty about that, maybe?" "Yes. Yes, that's it. Guilty that he can't give her what she wants." "Well, then. Why not write THAT into the story?"....

You proceed like this, typing the "conversation" into a file, so that you can capture ideas on the fly, but permanently. Doing that keeps your brain engaged and focused in the story, rather than leaving your desk for some diversion. It also taps your creative subconscious constructively, by asking "it" an open-ended series of questions and giving "it" permission to make wild suggestions, without self-censorship. Often, entirely new paths around mental roadblocks emerge. By continuing to ask questions in the "dialogue," you test your brainstorms and flesh out answers. I've found it to be a really productive technique.

I am not so sure about the vigilante bit. My favourites were Bonanza (Manalito), Riptide, Lash Laroo, Thunderbirds and Four Feather Falls. At such an age, I never understood the finer points of the stories. I was just waking up to Marina in Stingray. Allure and attraction, who knows?

My favorites of the 1950s-60s, when I was a kid, were "The Lone Ranger" and Disney's "Zorro." I did watch "The Ranger Rider," "The Cisco Kid," "Cheyenne," and a few others, but Zorro and The Lone Ranger topped the list. I was into comic-book and pulp superheroes, too, but over time I evolved away from Superman, the one who initially captivated me, toward the ones without super-powers: Batman (my all-time favorite), and to a lesser extent the Phantom and Doc Savage. I liked the idea of heroes within the realm of physical possibility -- ones who had pushed their human capabilities to the max, rather than being endowed with quasi-magical powers that defied all natural laws.

Eventually, as I got older, that caused me to gravitate to the "lone-wolf-vigilante" type of thriller hero: some of Alistair MacLean's and Jack Higgins's characters; spies like Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm; private detectives like Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. Much later I became a big fan of Robert B. Parker's Spenser, Robert Crais's Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp, Brad Thor's Scot Harvath, and of course today's iconic vigilante drifter, Lee Child's Jack Reacher.

All the characters I liked had a personal code and a commitment to justice. And they all were tossed into the blender of my subconscious and fantasy life, eventually emerging as my own Dylan Hunter character -- an archetypal vigilante-justice hero. (less)

Quite welcome, Samuel. I don't get here as often as I would like. I'm working on my next novel, "BAD DEEDS," and till it's done, it is pedal to the metal. But I'll try to get back here and participate more once it's published this fall.
