Uh Oh - is this the part of the book where the hero doesn't get the heroine? The totally clueless stage?

No, not at all. He just agreed to be her lover, but he tried to play it off to himself that he was just trying to keep her from being with some other shady guy. He lies to himself often. He won't admit his attachment beyond a friend.
I was irritated that she would accept that from him. Make him admit it, dammit!
I know. She's letting him lie to himself and her. As the book goes on I see her less and less willing to let him dodge though.
Yeah, she gets better.
