Notes:
(1) Hagrid dresses for courting just the same as he does for court!
(2) The Goblet of Fire is made of wood! Must be non-flammable wood.
(3) "[Crouch's] toothbrush mustache and severe parting looked very odd."
- Yes, uncomfortably odd. The mustache had me wondering, but the "severe parting" confirmed it. Crouch is intended to remind you of Hitler.

(1) For someone who doesn't think much of muggles, Fudge sure loves to wear their clothes.
(2) "Sirius Black!" [Mrs. Weasley] shrieked, pointing at him.
"Mum, shut up!" Ron yelled. "It’s okay!"'
- Often a good "shut up" is the quickest remedy for hysteria.
(3) Dumbledore forces Sirius and Snape to shake hands. Ever the teacher, ever the students.

Notes:
(1) Fawkes uses his tears to speed up Harry's wounds healing. That's handy... sort of like wizard Polysporin.
(2) Now that Fleur likes Ron and pays him attention, I guess she's not hot no more. Not surprising. (see gif)
- Alternatively, once kissed, perhaps her veela powers wore off.
- Alternatively, perhaps Ron's shifted his attention elsewhere.

Notes:
(1) Harry's first clue should have been that Crouch always called Voldemort "The Dark Lord." All upright wizards use "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." The boldest just say Voldemort.
(2) Wonder if all the lip licking meant David Tennant needed ChapStick on standby?
(3) Karkaroff fled? Who's going to sail the ship back to Durmstrang? Magic, most likely.

Notes:
(1) Not the most impressive group of Death Eaters here. A bunch of no-names, Buckbeak's would-be executioner and some Slytherin dads.
(2) Wormtail speaks rat. Apparently being animagus gives you the ability to speak to animals. I guess McGonagall speaks cat.
(3) Voldemort gives a traditional villain tell-all monologue. A tad cliché if you ask me.

(1) '"Stop being noble," said Harry irritably. "Just take it, then we can get out of here."'
- Yeah, Cedric, stop being noble! Wait... no! Be noble! Take a dive!
(2) First student death, and the series is never the same again.
(3) Baby Voldemort is no Baby Yoda.
(4) Color-changing tattoos would be a goldmine!
(5) "Lord Voldemort had risen again."

Molly: "Oh! ... No — of course I didn’t!"
Narrator: "But she became considerably warmer toward Hermione after that."
(2) In North America we say "uh" not "er." The sphinx's password's "spiduh" to us.

(1) Continuity error. This is set in 1994, the Macarena (see gif) wasn't a thing until 1996.
- The male cheerleader on the right's creeping me out.
(2) "Fleur ... was eyeing Bill with great interest over her mother’s shoulder. Harry could tell she had no objection whatsoever to long hair or earrings with fangs on them."
- Fleur loves ze bad boys.

Glitchreads:
(1) Somehow, my recent review for "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" switched editions. Normally I'd switch it back, but it's the second review I've written for the book, and Goodreads only lets you switch the edition of either your earlier or more popular review. So now my book covers no longer match! and my OCD is driving me nuts!

(1) Krum's oddly puritan about Hermione possibly being with other guys. Who knew?
(2) Hagrid: “The less you lot ’ave ter do with these foreigners, the happier yeh’ll be. Yeh can’ trust any of ’em.”
Harry: “You were getting on all right with Madame Maxime.”
Hagrid: “Don’ you talk ter me abou’ her! ... You can’ trust any of ’em!”
- Xenophobic much?

(1) 'Both Harry’s and Ron’s [Easter eggs] were the size of dragon eggs and full of homemade toffee. Hermione’s, however, was smaller than a chicken egg. Her face fell when she saw it.
"Your mum doesn’t read 'Witch Weekly,' by any chance, does she, Ron?" she asked quietly.
"Yeah ... Gets it for the recipes."
Hermione looked sadly at her tiny egg.'

Because they don't care about muggle politics, Wizards never came to think that toothbrush moustaches were a bad thing. They try to avoid Grindelwald's hairstyle instead.

Though, seriously, I think what you mention is very much part of it. Metatextually, it's pretty obvious that Rowling's making the Hitler allusion, for whatever reason. The hair really cements it... if crouch had curly hair, it would be Charlie Chaplin.
Within the text, however, I think the point's being made that Crouch really likes to dress like a muggle, which is why Harry's always commenting on how weird he looks next to Dumbledore, and how he looks more comfortable in muggle clothes than wizard ones.
So, there's definitely something awkwardly anachronistic about Crouch. That he emulates Hitler's iconic look probably points to Hitler's image being prominent and omnipresent during the time when Crouch would have been growing up. As you say, being ignorant of the political context and social taboo, it's likely that he just thought he was a rather smart looking muggle. Sort of how like westerners will get Chinese or Japanese character tattoos because they look cool, with only a cursory understanding of their meaning.

That's a really cool point about the Hitler reference, I'd not noticed that before! Harry probably didn't fully catch on to why he found that 'odd', but I assume his subconscious was making a Hitler connection (as I expect he'd have covered WWII history in primary school)
Sabrina wrote: "That's a really cool point about the Hitler reference, I'd not noticed that before! Harry probably didn't fully catch on to why he found that 'odd', but I assume his subconscious was making a Hitle..."Yes, I definitely think it's intended to be one of those subconscious, back of your mind, details meant to be a bit of a warning sign about Crouch. I don't know how things are in Europe and around the world, but going to school in Canada, we didn't cover WWII in any meaningful way until my last year of high school. Possibly Harry would have learned some by age 10, local education being different – I'd defer to people with better knowledge about it. And even if not, the Hitler look is a striking enough symbol that children would probably pick it up by osmosis, along with its negative connotations.
Jayson wrote: "Sabrina wrote: "That's a really cool point about the Hitler reference, I'd not noticed that before! Yeah, I'm sure children could pick it up from anywhere really - there's so many children's historical fiction books focusing on the WWII period.
Annie wrote: "2)- more likely magical fire enchanted not to burn the wood...I just find it ironic that of all materials to build a goblet of "fire," they would choose wood :)
Annie wrote: "3) Huh. I never noticed that parallel"
I suppose most people wouldn't immediately make that connection. It took me several rereads to put it all together. You'd have to know what a toothbrush mustache is, first of all, and secondly, why people don't wear them anymore. Once you're aware of the politics of having toothbrush mustache, the whole thing sort of hits you in the face.
Sabrina wrote: "I went to school in Hong Kong (but my school was based on the English curriculum) and we covered WWII in Year 6 (fifth grade?). Yeah, I'm sure children could pick it up from anywhere really - there..."That's interesting. I suppose in North America educators here might think Hitler as topic might be too heavy for young children. I'd be hard pressed to think of any historical children's books depicting him, though, as I mentioned, different places around the world have different standards. My opinion is that Harry, like most young readers as well, would know generally who Hitler was and what he look liked, but wouldn't make that direct connection with Crouch. As you say, you can pick it up anywhere (view spoiler)["br"]>["br"]>

Sabrina wrote: "I laughed harder at that than I probably should have 😂"Like the description of Crouch in the book, once you see the resemblance, you can't un-see it. People who aren't aware just see a tea kettle. 😁
