The abuse plot starts to unravel way earlier in the series than I remembered. Very glad, since this is one of the aspects I remember liking most about these books.

“If I were more like my brother, you would hate me. If I were not what I am, then you would not like me as well as you do.”

I don’t remember if this point gets brought up much in later books that deal explicitly with Harry’s childhood being abusive, but I REALLY hope it does. “No, my childhood wasn’t all bad because [tangental arguable benefit]” is the most typical abused-kid reaction there is.

Having three separate people inside Harry’s head was an interesting choice for so early in the series. I find myself really liking the Occlumency stuff otherwise, though

Love the implication that adults being concerned about House rivalries is some peaked-in-high-school shit

Interesting that the Weasleys and Potters never met while they were all in the Order during the first war. I can’t recall if the author ever mentions the Order as having operated as isolated cells, which might explain that.

Read through this series once in high school and again in college. It’s been nine years, so we’ll see how it holds up.

Time for what might be my least favorite in the series.

This is fun! Not covering anything I don’t know yet, but I like the author’s voice and so far suspect it would be great for someone who doesn’t remember their senior year English class poetry unit.

If the Cardassians really wanted to throw the human and Bajoran negotiators for a loop they’d send Gul Madred in, but I highly doubt that’ll happen. Also, interesting to introduce a comfort man at the labor camp when the characters are only referring to women in that situation.

A bit of telling instead of showing plus a lot of rehashing TNG episodes (anyone who cares enough about Next Gen to be reading a book about it probably has encyclopedic knowledge of every single episode, we don’t need this), but I’ve wanted to hear this story told, Picard getting over Chain of Command, for more than a decade, so I’m not complaining too hard.
