Diego got a good read on people. His version of animal instinct, he usually dug to the root of someone within the first two interactions. Good enough to stay and find out more, bad enough to turn and run, somewhere in between: hackles raised, teeth bared, standing his ground. Ariel gave him nothing. Diego had no sense of who he might be or might’ve been. His heart skipped, anxiety swelling like a second skin.

It made me wonder if I’d ever held the door open for a monster. Some may scream obscenities in their cars at other drivers and wish a piano landed on them, but most of us didn’t mean it. These people meant it. They were the worst of humanity.
