“I dunno what you just said, but if you keep talking, imma get hard.”

“He said you’re looking at him all googly eyed.”

“Google what now?” Zee frowned.

“Apologies for my tardiness. I appear to have overslept—Zodiac, extract your tail from around my ankle.”

“Fuck. It wanders.”

“So... warm for this time of year, isn’t it.”

“Is it?”

“Lots of... weather we’re having?”

“Adam, I’m not an idiot. It is becoming clear that this hotel, and you, aren't what you appear to be.”

“Whaaat? We’ve only been open a few weeks. Sure, some odd things have happened, but it was always going to a bit of a struggle⁠—”

“Did you hear the part where I said I wasn’t an idiot?”

“I did hear that part, yes.”

“It’s a fucking miracle they get along at all,” he continued. “During the long war, demons and vampires annihilated several hundred thousand of each other. They have been enemies for generations.”

But Zee and Victor were different. Weren’t they? “We’ve gotten past the whole enemy thing.”

“Do lions change their spots?”

“I don’t think lions have spots.”

“That’s what they want you to think.”

“This is why I hate sleeping pills,” Chris grumbled into a mug of coffee. He’d only taken half a pill. “I feel like I’m underwater. I’m never taking these again. Flush them, burn them.” He tried slapping his face.

“Are one of the side effects suddenly turning into a drama queen?” I made a show of reading the bottle and he swiped it from my hand.

“Your life side effect is smartassery.”

“I’m not sure I want you guys to rescue me.”

Zee huffed. “We are pros at this.”

“I don’t think you are. You should let me go.” Was it the lack of a getaway vehicle that had put him off?

“Don’t be silly. We just have to wait until everyone leaves and we can walk right out.”

“Is this a kidnapping?” he asked.

“No, it’s a rescue.” Zee frowned, “Why isn’t he getting it?”

“Maybe we’re doing it wrong?”

“We don’t have time to count the tally of who did what. We all did what we were supposed to. That's why you’re both here. So let’s get ready for the day and figure out how to make the motherfuckers pay.” Like the hurricane he was, Snow was out the door before he finished speaking. Simon and I just looked at each other and began laughing.

“He’s scary sometimes,” Simon said through giggles.

“You’re not wrong.”

I grabbed the oils. Slowly, he submerged himself and I poured a little sandalwood smelling oils into the bath. His arms rested on the sides of the large tub and I saw his spread legs as an invitation to join him.

As I sat between them, encased by his body, the urge to weep was overwhelming. I didn’t stop the tears and Chris didn’t say anything. He just wrapped his arms around me and let me fall apart.

I didn’t know if I was glad he was underestimating Snow or angry he was dismissing him. One thing I worked hard at was keeping Snow’s gift a secret. Only those who absolutely had to know did. He’d been used for his gift before and I’d promised that would never happen again. Because of how Snow looked and acted, he was often cast aside as a non-threat. But that was everyone’s mistake.

With the mantra of "hold on, hold on" playing in my head, I made for Simon’s room. I stopped dead in my tracks when I found Buck laying in front of his closed door.

“Oh, sweetheart.” Kneeling in front of the dog that drove me crazy, I did my best to console him. “I promise I’ll bring him home. Please believe in me.” He whined and let out a sad howl. It ripped my heart in two and I wanted to weep with him.

“You listen to me. The man I love, the boy I claim as my own son, and the person you love more than anyone are missing. Our friends that have become family are dead or hanging on for their lives. It’s all a priority. You hear me?”

I knew I was shouting, but we needed to be on the same page. My family was attacked, taken, possibly killed. This wasn’t okay and I was going to make sure we got back our family.

“You hold on a second, Mrs. Markle.” I got right in her face. “Your French poodle is a little slut! She’s been shaking her fluffy ass all over the street. I saw her last week getting her ass tackled by Mr. Ryder’s bulldog, so don’t come here & blame Buck.”

“Why you little...”

Buck drove me up a wall, but he was family & I defended family even if their dicks got them in trouble.

“I love him with everything I am. I know the life he lives, the dangers that lurk. I respect the dark and the monsters who dwell there. I may be your best friend and require your muscle if there’s a problem, but never forget I’m also Snow Manos, husband to Christopher Manos.”

That weird conversation over, I climbed the front steps and was greeted by screams, something crashing, and a strange odor.

Fantastic.

“That is utterly ridiculous, Snow. I’m not making this a thirteen-tier cake just because Simon is going to be thirteen. This isn’t Cake Wars.”
