"Welcome to the No Tel Motel,” she drawled. “We givin’ liminal-space vibes in a quirky way. The aesthetic is low-key cursed but make it cozy. Wi-Fi’s mid but it works, and the vibes are slutty core. We’re living for it, though. Cash only, we don’t claim technology in this establishment. You want hourly? No shade no tea, we literally don’t judge here. Sheets are clean in six, no cap.”

”Uhm, there’s no tea?”

"Esmeralda! Wake up!"

"What is it now?" screamed Esmeralda. "A hipponocerous? Where is he, Miss Jane?"

"Nonsense, Esmeralda, there is nothing. Go back to sleep. You are bad enough asleep, but infinitely worse awake."

"Honey, your nerves are all on edge. What with all these ripotamuses and man eating geniuses that Mr. Philander been telling about—Lord, it ain't no wonder we all get nervous prosecution."

The water rose to Gus’s chest. Things were no longer good.

“Never thought I’d die in a pool,” he whispered. “And not by drowning.”

“I hear drowning’s real peaceful,” Toby whispered back. “Like going to sleep.”

“Yeah, and that’s why the CIA uses waterboarding to get information from prisoners. Relaxes them all to fuck.”

“David?” Otter says, the smile still on his face.

Neat. David. His name is David. How wonderful for him. How absolutely biblical. Apparently the heavens have opened up and choirs of angels are falling from the sky in a big fat ray of sunlight, all singing, “Daaaa-viiiiid,” and all I want for him is to be smote (smited? Smoted? One of those things that means fiery death pain) for staring at my boyfriend.

I could never have imagined that I’d be where I am now, at this point in my life. What matters is the Kid in my lap, playing with my fingers as he sounds like a kid. What matters is Otter’s hand at my back, rubbing gently while he watches the two people he says mean more to him than anything else in the world. This is us, okay? For all of our wrongs and for all of our rights, this is us. This is who we are.

He held onto the steering wheel, knowing everything was suddenly beyond any semblance of control. Those people were feeding on a dead person, and he couldn’t shake the image from his memory, couldn’t unsee the feral working of jaws and twinkling eyes. His doubts about a zombie outbreak, however, were no more.

“Fuck me,” Toby said in disgust, shaking his head at his rolling pin. “Got anything better?”

“This is a grocery store,” Walt replied. “What you see is it.”

“Isn’t there a sporting goods shop in the mall?”

“There is, but they’re closed."

“We could break in.”

“We can’t break in,” the cashier said. “That’s against the law.”

“I’d say a goddamn zombie apocalypse is reason enough to break in,” Toby reasoned.
