After a long day of prepping a house for painting, all Gus Berry wanted was the night off, to spend some time with his girlfriend, and relax before having to return to work the next morning.
But that isn’t going to happen.
Because Gus’s co-worker Benny has found a one-night job at the local Mollymart East, a job that has to be done by morning. If Gus and his paint crew can

I can appreciate Blackmore wanting to go back and give us a little more insight into Gus and his origins, how the plague emerged, etc, but coming out this long after the rest of the series has ended was unnecessary. If you are interested in the Mountain Man, this book is not something you have to read to understand the characters. The first book does a good enough job on character and situational development. However, I still really enjoyed going back to the Mountain Man series for one last stor ...more

Great zombie series, Gus is a great "every man" character.

A great read.
Fun and great pacing. I read a lot of zombie fiction and this series and the main character Gus are one of my favorites.
Check out the whole series!

The book was good. It gave a solid back story to Gus and the start of the apocalypse. I liked it but it wasn’t a must read. I love the series. This is the weakest book.

I posted my review for Mountain Man: Prequel (Mountain Man #0.4) on October 4, 2018 on audible's site, and wish I had submitted it here at the same time, since I wrote this on the heels of its release.
Hope you guys find it helpful. . .

I thought I got to know what shaped Gus after finishing his prequel short story titled: "The Hospital." The "Mountain Man Prequel" provides information never mentioned previously about his past. What a tr

Amazing! I was really impressed with this story. Average people trying to survive the beginning of a zombie apocalypse while trapped in a supermarket? :D sign me but please, that sounds like some creepy awesome fun! :D

The writing was great. Strong with a distinctly masculine voice that suits our main character, Gus, very well. There is a LOT of swearing throughout the story. And a lot of graphic violence. so it's definitely an adult book. but it works, all that swearing. >:D average painter

I love this series, and I was delighted to discover this prequel! Read for Audible by the masterful R. C. Bray, I was particularly interested in how and when Captain Morgan would make his appearance, and I must say, I was not disappointed!

Great prequel!

As a fan of the original series I really enjoyed getting to see how it all started for Gus. It was probably a little too brief for my liking but I enjoyed it regardless!
The beginning of any zombie apocalypse is always open to a huge amount of scrutiny and I think that’s why most authors avoid it so I applaud Keith for taking on the challenge.
Gus is one of my favourite characters. I highly recommend this book and this series for lovers of the genre.

Keith C. Blackmore is definitely an underappreciated writer. The guy is super talented. I can only assume its the genre he writes in that doesn't give him the recognition he deserves. This is another really good book in the mountain man series. It was really nice to see how it all began.

Another winner! I enjoyed reading about Gus prior to and during the beginning of the zombie apocalypse.

Solid 3.0. If you had not read all the other books (like I did) the book would probably be better, but seeing as I read them in the order they came out I found the book a little bit lacking in the action department. This is more of a comparison though to the others though. I did love that they at least made an attempt at explaining how the zombies came around, unlike many others. I also liked that it did mention other people/events that popped up in the other books. Well written and very easy to ...more

It was so good to see Gus again! Absolutely loved this story of the first days of the zombie apocalypse in Gus' world and how he became The Mountain Man.

This prequel re-affirmed why the Mountain Man series is in my top 3 of favorite zombie series.

A very excellent zombie story! If you like the genre then this is work a listen :D Was really hard to put down. I started listening on a 10k run and even found myself with my ear buds in at work when no one was looking. Now for the rest of the series . . . :D

This prequel of the Mountain Man universe is at the level of the rest of the series: it's good post-ap, with ordinary characters who face the unthinkable, and who adapt.
Some passages are slightly boring, some technical details are not very realistic, but overall it's nice to read and rather fun.
But it's a little bit always the same thing.

I'm glad I jumped onto Keith C. Blackmore's series late, because I had the pleasure of reading this prequel (written after the main series, I believe) before diving into what is one of the best zombie sagas available. Not only are his characters realistic and their decisions those of people actually trying to survive instead of teams of special ops warriors just blasting away and never in any real danger, but his dialogue, for me, is what really stands out. The dialogu

Nice little story giving us a glimpse at the initial outbreak and how Gus became the ‘Mountain Man’. It was just as great as the rest of the series but its hurt by the short length of the novel. If anything it just left me wanting more in the same world, maybe a side story with one of the new characters. Gus was still as ‘everyman’ as he was and his reactions and handling of the situation stay true to his character from the later books. This series remains one of my top zombie fictions.

Good old gus

I've missed gus so much. Was great to get him backstory and find out how he ended up an alcoholic zombie arse kicker. Top read.

Listened to audiobook. Absolutely loved it! Just as good as the rest of the Mountain Man series...Gus kicks zombie ass! Mountain Man #5 out soon!

I've loved the "Mountain Man" series. When I found out there was going to be a prequel, I couldn't wait for it to come out. Needless to say, this was a good beginning for Gus.

Speaking of Gus, I get that he'd change as the series progressed but I swear the majority of the book made him sound like a duff, the comments relating to his large butt or when the reader learns he prefers dark underwear for fear of skid marks. Seriously? lol

I'm sad that this series is now officiall

This book is a zombie-rights activist's dream.

Just when you thought the fun was through, here comes Keith with another bombshell to drop on you that paints a whole new picture of our best friend, Gus.

This book started off by completely destroying the image I had previously built of Gus. From learning about his past occupation and seeing how he interacted with his team, to gaining an appreciation for why he wore dark underwear, Gus definitely morphed in my eyes only to be

I love the original Mountain Man series, so I wanted to read this book ASAP. However, I think most prequels - especially origin stories - suck, so I also wanted to *not* read this book. It was a toss-up for a bit, but I finally started in on this prequel. And for the first 5 chapters, I thought I had made a serious mistake. Soooooo much of the start of this book is about painting. I am *not* making this up. Gus, our beloved cranky alcoholic zombie apocalypse survivor, works for a painting compan ...more

Another Chance To Walk With The Mountain Man!

When I reached the end of the Mountain Man series it was a bittersweet moment. I'd reached the end of the story of one of the most real-feeling characters of this rather crowded genre. I'd walked with the Mountain Man and his companions through many adventures and like most I felt like I had a friend in Gus. For the most part he was just an ordinary guy doing his kind of best to cope with his world being torn apart and infested with zombies with

I've read the rest of the Mountain Man series, thoroughly enjoyed it and had been thinking about picking this up on Audible for a couple of Months. The only thing that had been putting me off was its relatively short length; at eight hours and twenty minutes, it's hardly epic and I usually aim for longer books when it comes to my monthly credit.

I finally took the plunge this Month and I'm really glad I did. It's well paced, and the supporting characters that are here to keep the pro

I've been a huge fan of Mountain Man since the beginning, voraciously sucking them up as quick as I could. The entire series has the right mix of great characters, crazy plot, zombies, a dystopian future, humor, and ultimately some hope. It's totally not necessary to start with this one, but it's as good a place as any. Great to hear from Gus again.

I have read on the various interwebs that Keith Blackmore was reluctant to write more in his zombie infested world he creates here, not w

Great series

I love this series. I'm half way through hellifax right now. I saw this pre book but was saddened it wasn't audio😞. So I went old fashioned and read it 😉. I cannot wait for the last book because Gus is not in hellifax but his friend Scott is. I'm wondering now if Annie owns that farm that you will read later. I hope Gus gets a happy ending in the end with a wife or girlfriend and kids somehow. He is a character you would love to hang out with. The audio's are great if you get them

This was a great look at the main character of the Mountain Man series, Gus. I enjoyed getting to know more about who Gus was prior to the outbreak. In this prequel, we get a rare glimpse of Gus as a more vulnerable character than who we know him to be throughout most of the rest of the series. Keith C. Blackmore stayed true to the character and the style of the series. This prequel fits perfectly with the rest of the books. Recommended if you're a fan of the series and even if you're not, you w ...more

I had high hopes for this as I've read all of the other Mountain Man books, thankfully I wasnt disappointed as this was even better than I'd hoped. I forgot how well Keith Blackmore builds tension and the sense of relentless dread from Zombies without any gimmicks.
This perfectly explained how a zombie outbreak could overtake the world and how people would react, it built good characterisation, had lots of humour and real tension.
My only criticism is that Keith seems to be a bit too preocc

Great and disappointed the ride is over...

Great and disappointed the ride is over...time to go back to the Breed series (Also great BTW). Keith, please crank out another horror book before the holidays. Keith has quickly become one of my favorite authors. The thrills are always good, but Keith's ability to give his characters life is what really stands out. For those who haven't heard of MM series, I'm envious of the discovery you are about to make. You are in for a treat!
Just finished listening to this & I have to urge to listen to the whole series again! Blackmore’s characters are realistic, they crack me up, & make me feel for them. It’s a realistic 🧟♂ book series that focuses on the characters. Unlike any show or zombie book I’ve read before. Yes, Gus does a lot of ball scratching. Just get over it & let the man take care of business since we don’t know if he’ll get to do it later. #audiobook #RCBray #zombie ...more

Glad to have Gus again.

Definitely, my favorite zombie series. Sad to know it's over really, going to miss Gus and his adventures. Glad we got a prequel to it, seeing what prepared Gus to be how he is in the books and how he handles the apocalypse. Long time fans won't be disappointed.
