Dorian and Henry discuss Basil's disappearance (and Henry doesn't believe that Dorian could have killed him. Then they discuss Dorian's youth and lack of aging and Dorian is determined to change -- to be good, even though Henry doesn't want him to.

James Vane is dead and Dorian couldn't be happier...oh, boy

Dorian called an old friend over to help dispose of Basil's body (after blackmailing him to do so). Poor Basil :(

Dorian, Dorian, Dorian! what are you doing! Oh, poor Basil, he was only trying to help and you had to go and kill him!?

Basil runs into Dorian after years of no contact and deads to know if all the horrible rumors surrounding Dorian are true (hint: they are) and Dorian says that he will show Basil his soul if he insists so much.

years have past and Dorian is even more paranoid than before. He's taken up a myriad of hobbies trying to bide his time - embroidery, music, perfume, jewels. He'll vanish for stretches of time on end, only to reappear in a society like nothing's happened. people are starting to whisper behind him as to what secrets he's hiding.

Dorian calls frame makers over to help move the veiled painting to the attic (a schoolroom that he used to spend a lot of time in) so that his valet and anyone else wouldn't have a chance to peek under the purple pall, considering he is the only one who has a key to the room. Henry sends him a book that enthralls Dorian so much that he's an hour late to dinner. Henry leaves the chapter on a very curious note

Basil confesses his worship to Dorian after he throws a fit over not letting Basil see the portrait. Basil had plans to exhibit the painting in France, but Dorian is adamant that no one sees the painting, ever.

Poor Sibyl indeed! apparently, heartbreak was too much for her to bear so she went and killed herself. now Dorian must deal with the consequences of his sins and watch the portrait change further and further with each cruel act he may partake in.

Sibyl no longer sees the fantasy of the theatre after kissing Dorian, resulting in her poor acting skills. Dorian is embarrassed in front of Basil and Henry (his crushes lol) and takes out his anger on Sibyl, telling her that she ruined his love for her. after walking around London all night Dorian gets back to his home where he sees that the painting has taken on a cruel grin (FIRST TIME PORTRAIT BEGINS TO CHANGE!!)

Dorian tells Basil and Henry of his engagement to Sibyl over dinner before going to the theatre to watch her play Juliet. Basil doesn't seem too thrilled with the idea of Dorian marrying Sibyl, but can't do anything about it (aww, poor Basil) while Henry is once again mentioning age and immortality and beauty. lots of foreshadowing in this chapter...

we meet Sibyl Vane and her family at last. Her brother, 16 y/o James, is leaving for Australia and while on a walk with Sibyl she is a hopeless romantic when it comes to what his future may look like, whereas all James is concerned about is who this 'Prince Charming' is that his sister is in love with/engaged with. their mother is only concerned with money it seems, and avoiding all talk about her kid's father(s).

so we're finally introduced to Dorian's crush, Sybil. the fact that he keeps going back to that theatre, even though it apparently sucks just to see this girl act in Romeo and Juliet is as amusing as it is adorable. Henry is just as amused by this fact as I am. And now, Dorian is engaged to this woman! Oh my!
