seems like I pocket-updated my page status on this o_o

I don't think he was ever happy unless some one was in love with him, responding to him like filings to a magnet, helping him to explain himself, promising him something. What it was I do not know. Perhaps they promised that there would always be women in the world who would spend their brightest, freshest, rarest hours to nurse and protect that superiority he cherished in his heart.

"Pigeon Feathers" is a moving story. Uncertainty, death, religion are reconciled in the apotheosis of natural beauty: beauty which is too sacred to be the investment of a profane nature, a beauty which goes down to the smallest and lowest fragment and creature. Pigeon feathers as a small unit of sacred beauty, a reassurance of grace.

"You'll Never Know, Dear, How Much I Love You" is a sort of false-swipe at Joyce's "Araby" - a coming-of-age story about a young boy dazzled by the novelty of a travelling carnival, stripped of his money by the loaded-dice and short-changing stall-men, and heads home disillusioned by the meretricious glitz of Middle Class entertainment.
