Now just as man has almost no physiological self-knowledge except what is derived from comparative anatomy, so vanity and various other causes of illusion prevent us from having a clear picture of out own passions except through the observation of the weaknesses of others. If by chance this essay of mine serves any useful purpose, it will be to train the mind to make this sort of comparison.

It is hard for me to see these as "Critical Essays" when really they seem to be positive reviews preached to a choir. Bloom's prestige undoes him a bit, I think, and he takes his own opinion for granted at times (though I suppose all reviews are narcissistic in nature). He definitely makes me want to read more; not necessarily because of his insights, but maybe despite them...
