Read last chapter and intro materials. No reference to Gill’s sexual abuse of his family members. Intro gives some biographical details, highlights each chapter a bit, and details editions’ differences. This is less essay and more short book.

Was confused but figured out that the illustrations for “systematic sets”, “symbolic shapes”, and “cartoonlike expressions” are all mixed up on this page.

Pg 52 has two paragraphs repeated.

Brings up a lot of material that harks back to my media studies days. Some of the material feels a teensy bit obvious, but it explains well and is a novel reminder of things that are easy to take for granted.

Also read ch 10, modern and future magic.

Some resonates a lot, some feels a little loosely argued. “Triple helix” of science, magic and religion is established, but wishing there was a better distinction between religion and magic. He frequently contrasts magic against science as a foil, but often passes over religion.

I’m already sold on “Boglehead” index investing , so this feels a little dry/repetitive but it does lay out a thorough summary for indexing, seeking low fee funds, not succumbing to XYZ. Maybe a good book on investing early on, but if it’s familiar material the numbers might feel like a slog.

Quite good so far! Or at least something I feel like I can relate to, for better or worse.
