I would love to just read this all in one day, as if it were a single lecture that I had to attend in a single day

Wow, this author is really great and fantastic from a biological perspective because everything is explained along hereditary and evolutionarily principles. Thus the reader actually learns a great deal. In this current chapter, he has chimpanzees, teaching, gorillas, and chimpanzees doing dentist work on gorillas!

OMG LOL So glad I’m half-Black and that my non-Black half can laugh out loud at my Black half! This author wrote, of us Black folk, something SO true: “What group of people we were, I thought. Why, you could cause us the greatest humiliation, simply by confronting us with something we liked.” He’s talking about yams, and soul food, and “chitterlings”, saying you can call a man out by this, omg lol

Another example of the jerkiness in this writing: we go from working in a factory, surrounded by machines, and a mean, boss, and an explosion. Then suddenly we’re transported, in the next chapter, with the guy who got injured in the explosion being performed on by brain surgeons who are giving him electric shocks?! None of this stuff is plausible, and it’s frustrating b/c the subject matter is so serious.

Call me crazy? “You’re a black educated fool, son. These white folk have newspapers, magazines, radios, spokesmen to get their ideas across. If they want to tell the world a lie, they can tell it so well that it becomes the truth…because it’s the kind of lie they want to hear…” Like, Covid not leaking from a lab. That’s a lie. Folks.

Not easy to follow. It started off w/powerful & symbolic introspection. But since the opening it’s been a jumble of larger than life scenarios (a literal battle royal, incest, speeches, mob violence) that are hard to decipher amidst all the literary devices. I don’t always know what’s going on. And so much of this book is a Message. Kinda preachy

some jumbled but big moments: outta nowhere the scene with mob, and before that, the battle royal—had to flip back & forth like what?! where is this coming from—did they really do such things? i think Ellison’s sensationalizing moments. But he’s the author, it’s his work, but it just feels random and unrealistic, especially w/the father and the incest—so much, all quick, in just 100pgs. :/
