It really helps when he provides concrete illustrations or examples, such as the prisoner meeting his executioner, or having as an object a vast plane, or a range of mountains, or a great crashing sea. Past the 2/3rd mark. A very rewarding read, all the more so for having been stumbled upon. Streit likens the League of Nations to a body for STATES; and the greater Union to a body for INDIVIDUALS. One can arrest a person but not a nation-state. One can prevent or hinder a man but can hinder a nation-state through only sanctions, or force.

This book is so freaking long! I just finished a section that was making some relative sense to me, it was about pride and humility and how it relates to a sensation, and now we are moving on to vice and virtue, but the whole book is just really long and drab and dry, full of jargon which he employs to make sense of abstract things.

The end Of book one was very rewarding because the author spoke from more personal viewpoint and expressed some of the frustrations in being consumed with such sophistries and subtleties. It leaned toward an unfortunate feeling within me that he was troubled with conforming to the common pleasures of his society, and that he was tempted to leave behind the mental exertions of philosophy
