Lots of stats but Sowell continually threads his thesis: that the less desirable traits of ghetto culture came from someWHERE.

Wow, already a moving book. Sowell delivers potent factual information right away about the origins of the early British (European: Scots, Irish, et al) immigrants. Some came from the fringes of England. It's really fascinating how those distinct cultures were carried over to U.S.A. & how they morphed, & influenced Afro slaves. Disregard for hired work, promiscuity, the pride that is "touchiness", etc.

Last chapter. 30 mins. Really had to put in work to finish this book. But it wasn't bad or terrible or uninformative. It just seemed that every chapter could have shaved off 10-12 pages. Maybe it's that the book is a blend of information (short of activism) & ordinary narration. We follow Pollan as he meets with mushroom hunters, pig hunters, factory farm workers, et al.

Stretching for the finish line! Enjoyed the chapter on mushrooms, find them to be mysterious, & do not like to eat them at all. Also found entertaining the hunt, & how Pollan felt prior to & after the kill. It felt honest, & I appreciate the journalistic integrity. One can follow him along on a sort of journey.

Gosh, just trucking through this book now. It feels bloated. If I had plenty of time, the ambling, pedestrian pace would be no problem. But I just finished "Eating Animals" & feel underwhelmed now w/T.O.D.

It's the inner dialogue that irks me. He fleshes out his thoughts that proceed from observations & reflections upon food. Its consumption & production.

Whew, again, a pretty lengthy book, much of it is in the manner of narrative & prose, however the pages are sprinkled with information & sobering realities. Many reviews criticized the author's ambiguous stance on eating animals. I too am confused as to the overall message. He's out there killing chickens, eating with no qualms about what's on the plate, and just seems to be hungry, & curious. Not impassioned.

This is much longer than I presumed it would be. Putting in solid stretches of reading time but not 1/2 way through. I can't find any pointed arguments. Rather, I get a gestalt of how food is produced & consumed. It's informative & I'm enjoying it, but am taking a deep breath as I chug along toward to the end.

Plenty of open time today (& this week) to push through the book.
