The real American hero is the so-and-so that finally approved these reprints! Just Larry Hama dishing out functional, fun, and genuinely clever comics about toys from the jump. With Herb Trimpe no less! And the best part is, he’s STILL doing it? Like I’m pulling ARAH RIGHT NOW. boggles my mind in the best possible way.

Book III

This is turning out to be a crazy strong follow up.

Book II (I very much appreciate this continuing the thread of “your dreams came true, now what?” Even after the level up established in the opening’s ending. Also very much appreciate it explicitly now acknowledging the neurodivergence of its main characters)

Oops I started #2 (and I’m already way in because it seems to be mostly hinged around Leonard!)

This being mostly about crazy disaffected Flower Children, on both the right and left, gives it a real boost ahead of other stuff like this.

I think I may have a new favorite odd couple (read: shitty) PI pairing.

Book III: Ember’s Tomb

“Everybody else could either get on board or button their candy asses on back to Drop City.” Gotta say, that’s one helluva sentence. That’s also occurring in a scene where this guy is talking to a sentient bear drunk on schnapps.

I’m continually surprised at just how much hay the show made out of the first 100 pages of this.

Very interesting to now be clocking just how specifically Quentin sucks. Dude is like P*ers A*thony level horny for like EVERY single woman he encounters, it’s pathetically hilarious.

Interesting to be returning to this after almost 12 years ago nearly reading it in its entirety over a books-a-million coffee shop shift.

Side Quest Year 1 Finale! And it’s already SO cute and funny! And not in the usually unfunny way prose stuff is? This is genuinely really clever in a lot of ways. I’m very excited to get deeper into it (and see what Year 2 Side Questin’ looks like!)

I’m such a basic bitch, I’m about to be pulling THREE different Wolverine titles. Who even am I anymore?

This would have made an incredible double feature with The Wasp Factory.

The Invisible Man: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (It’s amazing to realize we’ve been doing “Shitty Little Man Gets Superpowers” since the 1980s).

The Time Machine: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Finally reading all this Wells stuff makes Philip Farmer and the Wold Newton Theory even funnier to me because he read all this stuff too and was then like, “okay, cool, but what if it’s all one billion times hornier?” And then he just did that forever. I love books.

Why is the creepiest thing about this when Renfield starts talking like a YouTube grifter?
