Comparisons to Ready Player One are way off the mark. The world building in Warcross is virtually non-existent. Seriously. Pop culture apparently hasn't progressed beyond Harry Potter and Mario Kart.

The story thus far...young woman, down on her luck, is rescued by billionaire--absurdly young and handsome billionaire--because she's spe-shul. *Yawn.*

George sets my backpack in a back closet of the plane. Then he gives me a tip of his hate and a smile. "Have a lovely trip," he says. "Enjoy the flight." Before I can ask him what he means, he turns away and heads down the stairs to his car.

I'm pretty sure he means, "Have a lovely trip and enjoy the flight." More stupid dialogue.

"Yeah," I reply. "So...do you know why we're heading for the airport?"

Uh, because that's where they keep the airplanes? And because you can't swim to Tokyo? What a stupid bit of dialogue.

So far, this is pretty cute. I like the pseudo-Victorian setting with magic setting. And sweet gay romance? Hurray!

This feels like a Ready Player One lite, without the nostalgia, and probably with more romance.

Even after they finally let you out, even after you're old and dried up and thirty...

Because thirty is so ancient! :D

They conjure phantoms endlessly, terrified that their victims will someday do back what was done to them--even if, in truth, their victims couldn't care less about such pettiness and have moved on. Conquerors live in dread of the day when they are shown to be, not superior, but simply lucky.

Hoa's backstory is fascinating.

Silly boy is running off to see the gurl.

I think this is shaping up to be some sort of mother vs. daughter battle.

Interesting premise, okay characters, but reads like a long backstory exercise.

This is pale shade of Jade City, but...the premise is original, and it hasn't been mucked up too much with overwrought teenage romance

I should be bored out of my mind, but something about N.K. Jemisin's writing holds my attention. Maybe it's just the geology. Yeah, geology. Take that Sheldon Cooper!

True. I like Huma (Kiva's mom). She reminds me of Chrisjen Avasarala from The Expanse.
