Color me surprised, I still don't hate this.

He'd come to recognize the bizarre phenomenon of Zoya's beauty, the way men loved to create stories around it. They said she was cruel because she'd been harmed in the past. It was a free Tor ebook and I can't resist free. Thus far, I've been reading forever and have only recently cracked the 10% mark. There's a ton of politics and place names and I've already forgotten them. Apparently, things are gonna get very BDSM soon. Not my thing, but maybe more interesting than the history lessons.

Got King of Scars months ago as a birthday present. Figured I should finish this series first since KoS has characters from this and Six of Crows.

This book led me to Octolab TV on YouTube where I just wasted an inordinate amount of time. It's so fascinating.

if animals were conscious, according to one book, written by a Tufts University professor, dogs would untangle their leashes from poles and dolphins would leap out of tuna nets. (That author clearly doesn't read Dear Abby. Why don't those women leave their abusive husbands? Why won't that couple stop visiting the rude in-laws?)

Exactly. Clearly Tufts professors are overrated twits.

American naturalist Henry Beston writes that animals "are not brethren, they are not underlings" but beings "gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear." They are..."other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth."

I've always harbored a fondness for monsters. Even as a child, I had rooted for Godzilla and King Kong instead of for the people trying to kill them.It had seemed to me that these monsters' irritation was perfectly reasonable. Nobody like to be awakened from slumber by a nuclear explosion, so it was no wonder to me Godzilla was crabby....

I'm torn like an old sweater. This is an easy read, especially since I'm already skimming; I should just f*cking finish it. OTOH. The urge to DNF is strong.

*Yawn.* Now for the "Poor girl gets to hang out with the rich and famous at a fabulous party" segment of this trope fest.
