"Just a moment," David said, planting a finger on the page to mark his place in his book. "What was your name?"
"Yuri Vedenem, moi soverenyi."
"Yuri Vedenen, if you upset my wife again, I will kill you where you stand."

Heh!

"Spare me your sermons," she hissed. "It is only my loyalty to the king that keeps me from pulling the air from your chest and crushing your lungs like hollow gourds."
"I've seen her do it," said Nikolai. "Makes a funny sound."
"Kind of a pop?" said Tamar.
"Wetter," Nikolai said. "More of a squelch."

He'd come to recognize the bizarre phenomenon of Zoya's beauty, the way men loved to create stories around it. They said she was cruel because she'd been harmed in the past. They claimed she was cold because she just hadn't met the right fellow to warm her. Anything to soften her edges and sweeten her disposition--and what was the fun in that? Zoya's company ass like strong drink. Bracing....

Yeah. I'm glad I went back and finished the Shadow and Bone Trilogy, because otherwise, I'd be like who the hell are these people?

Mal and the twins had leapt into that battle to make sure the Darkling wouldn't learn our location. They hadn't hesitated. They'd kill with ruthless efficiency. I'd taken one life, and I was curled up like a child, wiping sick from my lip.

Suck it up, buttercup. This is war.

It was a free Tor ebook and I can't resist free. Thus far, I've been reading forever and have only recently cracked the 10% mark. There's a ton of politics and place names and I've already forgotten them. Apparently, things are gonna get very BDSM soon. Not my thing, but maybe more interesting than the history lessons.

Marine biologist James Wood suggest our hubris gets in our way. He likes to imagine the way someone like Octavia might attempt to measure our brain power: "How many color patterns," he suggests an octopus might wonder, "can your severed arm produce in one second?" On the basis of that answer, Octavia could reasonably conclude we humans were stupid indeed....

The octopus eye, unlike out own, can detected polarized light. It has no blind spot. (Our optic nerve attaches to the back of the eye at the retina, creating the blind spot. The octopus's optic never circles around the outside of the retina.)

A worm dropped right near his head, and still the fish [an eel] didn't move. The eels was fast asleep.
Then suddenly, we saw the voltmeter flash.
"What's going on?" I asked Scott. "I thought the eel was asleep."
"He is asleep," Scott answered. And then we both realized what was happening.
The eel was dreaming.

if animals were conscious, according to one book, written by a Tufts University professor, dogs would untangle their leashes from poles and dolphins would leap out of tuna nets. (That author clearly doesn't read Dear Abby. Why don't those women leave their abusive husbands? Why won't that couple stop visiting the rude in-laws?)

Exactly. Clearly Tufts professors are overrated twits.

American naturalist Henry Beston writes that animals "are not brethren, they are not underlings" but beings "gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear." They are..."other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth."

I've always harbored a fondness for monsters. Even as a child, I had rooted for Godzilla and King Kong instead of for the people trying to kill them.It had seemed to me that these monsters' irritation was perfectly reasonable. Nobody like to be awakened from slumber by a nuclear explosion, so it was no wonder to me Godzilla was crabby....

The author is my spirit animal.
