For some reason this guide/craft book leaves me cold instead of bubbling with manuscript ideas, like I’m used to with craft books. I guess I just don’t really *like* Gabaldon’s prose itself, or just not this process, or possibly both.

Good. Really brisk pace, setting up a powder keg.

Despite the clumsy writing and tedious pace, I’ve grown to like the characters. There’s raw quality peeking through this mess. It just needed some serious rewrites to cut away the cruft and over-explaining.

The raw characters are good. These emotional dynamics are *good*. They’re just written as if the reader is too stupid to pick up on them without a monologuing narrator yelling DID YOU SEE THAT DEVELOPMENT? LET ME EXPLAIN IT IN EXCRUCIATING DETAIL JUST IN CASE for paragraph after unnecessary paragraph.

Seriously, book could be half the word count. Use those words for more scene setting and environment interaction.
