Ponderous so far. A mix of dramatic scene-setting, interesting characters seen too briefly, and menacing development and exposition. I've been told to have patience with the first book though.

Still can't tell if the racism and misogyny are mindfully constructed for the protagonist to spew (and later learn better), or if that's just the author. Given the pulp quality of the rest of the story elements though, being unsure might be giving too much credit.

No worse, but no subversion yet. It just seems to be a bunch of class stereotypes cobbled together to build a superficial near-future dystopia. I think the overall intent is criticism of 90s U.S. education trends, but it throws a lot of groups under the bus to get there.

Well this isn't a promising start. A lot of last-millennium sexual harassment baked into the narrative, and a lot seems like lazy world building, not signs of an unreliable narrator. So far. Let's see if it subverts any of this soon.
