Just finished the introduction. If he can flesh out half of what he describes there as the story of the book, I'm going to appreciate this book a lot.

Mae's gotten very caught up in the ranking game, and then she hooked up with Kalden, who she still knows next to nothing about.

OMG it's so hard reading this because it just sets a person's teeth on edge. it is not about the best argument winning, it is about spending the money to scare people who don't want to take the time to understand the underlying issues.

After a pretty long lead-up, describing his reporting experiences, war zone travel, illicit drug use and other behaviors that could be described as self-destructive (all in a congenial and enjoyable style), he is finally getting to his discovery of meditation as a key to the mindfulness he is seeking. I find myself mentally comparing a bit to the 'Pray' part of 'Eat Pray Love' as he attends a meditation retreat.
