For years I've had a dislike of the Harry potter movies and a simple disinterest for the franchise as a whole. Everytime the topic of the movies come up and I try to voice my opinion I'm met with a "yeah but you haven't read the book so you're basically talking through your ass". Well, after years of hearing that stupid argument I read the book and I can only say it didn't improve my opinion of the movies or the franchise as a whole.

The main problem I have is I can't suspend my disbelief about t

This boy will be famous. There won't be a child in our world who doesn't know his name.

This book doesn't need to be reviewed, this is pure gold.

To me, if I were allowed to rate only one book/series with a 6 on Goodreads, it would be without a doubt for Harry Potter. Harry, Ron and Hermione are three very interesting characters, deep and complex in a positive way. Each of them has their dark and bright sides. And this is the same for every secondary character. I can’t pick one single character that I absolutely hate, except Lucius Malfoy and Crabbe and Doyle I guess but they are here to be hated, not developed enough to have an ounce of ...more

Only Harry Potter could make me read (and understand) a French book for days and days and days without getting frustrated. It may have helped that I knew like 75% of this book by heart. But still. YAY IMPROVING FRENCH SKILLZ!

Re-read in French recently and still love it. I was also really amused to find out that magic wands are called "baguettes magiques".

Gorgeously translated and performed. It's amazing how no matter the language and format I still burst into tears when Neville gets those last points.

This book was good and I enjoyed it in itself... but I feel a series should probably be reviewed as a whole so here is what I thought about Harry Potter, at large:

Actually, I dropped the series entirely after the fourth book. And I didn't just dislike the series, I felt annoyed at it!
It was trying to dupe me into believing everything was fine while it was not and I felt cheated... of course it couldn't last. The fourth book was the last straw: this series and I ended up having a resentful (on my

I re-listened to this as an audiobook in French ("Harry Potter a l'école des sorciers") to try to get a little less rusty. Obviously, I still loved it, even though I didn't catch every word. I'd definitely recommend it!

I wanted to try to read this in French since I studied French in High School and College to see if I still could. I needed to go back and forth between this version and the English version. I was able to understand about 25-30% I think without having to translate, though that could just be from how many times I have read every book. Several of the characters names, the house names, and the names of the Wizarding money were different. Some seem d to translate correctly but some didn’t. See below ...more

Rereading this for the Nth time but it feels anew. It was the first time I participated in a group reading challenge, the first full novel I read in French (granted, making heavy use of the dictionary and internet translations), and the first novel I read on my Kindle, all the while amid the author's controversies regarding trans people. There's no denying this is a compelling story, especially knowing what comes next. Now that I'm here, I realize there's not really a point to this review, and I ...more

Harry as a survivor of trauma he learns about only later, and Neville Longbottom as a child with PTSD, and Hermione Granger discriminated against for no other reason than being born into the wrong family (as is Ronald Weasley, for that matter).
Excellent !!

This translation seemed to leave out a few sentences here and there, compared to the Turkish translation with which I read it.

I was gifted a copy of this from a friend at her wedding as part of a little gift for being one of her bridesmaids. We'd become friends in French classes in college and shared a love for Harry Potter.

This is still the only book I've read entirely in French, and it's been a long time since I made it through this translation. haha.

The French version of Hufflepuff is the best thing --> Poufsouffle. My favorite name, and the only house I haven't been sorted into.

(Regarding reading the French-language edition of the book...)

It's good to practice a foreign language with a book you already know back-to-front.

Why the hell is "Snape" translated into French as "Rogue"?

While as I get older, I become less enamored with the wizarding universe of Harry Potter and the franchise as a whole, this is a particularly clever translation so 5 stars.

Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she ch
