I’m sure this book is very insightful but it’s lowkey kinda offensive generalizing people like that lol. Also the whiplash from these negative Italian stereotypes to the Tuscan sun lady romanticizing every stone and every piece of linen in Italy is kinda funny.

The sweeping arrests of 1979-1981 after the murder of the Christian democrat dude help fill the blanks for Nadia and Pasquale’s hideout/arrest in the Neapolitan novels. The terrorism too helpful for background when lenu moved back to Naples. The rest is hard to follow. What a shit show should be the subtitle of this book sigh

I did not know that Italy unified in 1861. That’s so late! Also a month before the U.S. civil war started. Che strano!

Truly on the floor. Book was incredible. I always love a good Bildungsroman and tragic characters and this book had both, but in a mystery/thriller?! I read mystery and thriller as palate cleansers, not for the feels trip 😭 and a male author that moved me, so rare for me. These characters are gonna stay with me for a long time… The pirate and the beekeeper.. like the Neapolitan girls and their dolls. Bravo

Really like the world building and system of magic! And I like that it feels like the flashbacks from ATRT were incorporated in the flash backs. Not loving the auction stuff. Feels kinda dragged out?

So gripping. I can’t tell where it’s going at all. I wish I could listen to this on our way back to sac, and not rose in chains!

This is the opposite of an Erik Larson narrative history lol. I feel like the author needed to make the fictionalized part of the history more apparent. It was disappointing to know none of the history she presented was borne out by her research. It’s fine to imagine and romanticize but that should’ve been made more clear in a nonfiction.
